5.3 million American couples of reproductive age (9%) are affected by infertility, among which male factors account for up to 50% of cases, which necessitates the identification of parameters defining sperm quality, including sperm count and motility. In vitro fertilization (IVF) with or without intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) has become the most widely used assisted reproductive technology (ART) in modern clinical practice to overcome male infertility challenges. One of the obstacles of IVF and ICSI lies in identifying and isolating the most motile and presumably healthiest sperm from semen samples that have low sperm counts (oligozoospermia) and/or low sperm motility (oligospermaesthenia). Microfluidic systems have shown potential to sort sperm with flow systems. However, the small field of view (FOV) of conventional microscopes commonly used to image sperm motion presents challenges in tracking a large number of sperm cells simultaneously. To address this challenge, we have integrated a lensless charge-coupled device (CCD) with a microfluidic chip to enable wide FOV and automatic recording as the sperm move inside a microfluidic channel. The integrated system enables the sorting and tracking of a population of sperm that have been placed in a microfluidic channel. This channel can be monitored in both horizontal and vertical configuration similar to a swim-up column method used clinically. Sperm motilities can be quantified by tracing the shadow paths for individual sperm. Moreover, as the sperm are sorted by swimming from the inlet towards the outlet of a microfluidic channel, motile sperm that reach the outlet can be extracted from the channel at the end of the process. This technology can lead to methods to evaluate each sperm individually in terms of motility response in a wide field of view, which could prove especially useful, when working with oligozoospermic or oligospermaesthenic samples, in which the most motile sperm need to be isolated from a pool of small number of sperm.  相似文献

Previous studies have demonstrated the capability of superhydrophobic surfaces to produce slip flow and drag reduction, which properties hold considerable promise for a broad range of applications. However, in order to implement such surfaces for practical utilizations, environmental factors such as water movement over the surface must be observed and understood. In this work, experiments were carried out to present a proof-of-concept study on the impact of flow on longevity of polystyrene fibrous coatings. The time-dependent hydrophobicity of a submerged coating in a pressure vessel was determined while exposing the coating to a rudimentary wall-jet flow. Rheological studies were also performed to determine the effect of the flow on drag reduction. The results show that the longevity of the surface deteriorates by increasing the flow rate. The flow appears to enhance the dissolution of air into water, which leads to a loss of drag reduction.  相似文献

We point out that the light radion ?   in a recently proposed Warped Top-Condensation Model (WTCM), can provide distinct signatures in b→s?bs?, where the on-shell ? can decay with displaced vertices. We find that some of the parameter space of these models is constrained by B-meson and astrophysical data. Future B-decay measurements can lead to the discovery of the WTCM.  相似文献

We present a novel mechanism for generating both the baryon and dark matter densities of the Universe. A new Dirac fermion X carrying a conserved baryon number charge couples to the standard model quarks as well as a GeV-scale hidden sector. CP-violating decays of X, produced nonthermally in low-temperature reheating, sequester antibaryon number in the hidden sector, thereby leaving a baryon excess in the visible sector. The antibaryonic hidden states are stable dark matter. A spectacular signature of this mechanism is the baryon-destroying inelastic scattering of dark matter that can annihilate baryons at appreciable rates relevant for nucleon decay searches.  相似文献

In this research, pore scale simulation of natural convection in a differentially heated enclosure filled with a conducting bidisperse porous medium is investigated using the thermal lattice Boltzmann method. For the first time, the effect of connection of the bidisperse porous medium to the enclosure walls is studied by considering the attached geometry in addition to the detached one. Effect of most relevant parameters on the streamlines and isotherms as well as hot wall average Nusselt number is studied for two of the bidisperse porous medium configurations. It is observed that effect of geometrical and thermo-physical parameters of the bidisperse porous medium on the heat transfer characteristics is more complicated for the attached configuration. To assess the validity of the local thermal equilibrium condition in the micro-porous media, the pore scale results are used to compute the percentage of the local thermal non-equilibrium for two of the bidisperse porous medium configurations. It is concluded that for the detached configuration, the local thermal equilibrium condition is confirmed in the entire micro-porous media for the ranges of the parameters studied here. However, for the attached geometry, it is shown that departure from the local thermal equilibrium condition is observed for the higher values of the Rayleigh number, micro-porous porosity, solid–fluid thermal conductivity ratio, and the smaller values of the macro-pores volume fraction.  相似文献

Entropy generation for thermally developing forced convection in a porous medium bounded by two isothermal parallel plates is investigated analytically on the basis of the Darcy flow model where the viscous dissipation effects had also been taken into account. A parametric study showed that decreasing the group parameter and the Peclet number increases the entropy generation while for the Brinkman number the converse is true. Heatline visualization technique is applied with an emphasis on the Br 〈 0 case where there is somewhere that heat transfer changes direction at some streamwise location to the wall instead of its original direction, i.e., from the wall.  相似文献

Disruptions rarely occur in supply chains, but their negative financial and technical impacts make the recovery process very slow. In this paper, we propose a capacitated supply chain network design (SCND) model under random disruptions both in facility and transportation, which seeks to determine the optimal location and types of distribution centers (DC) and also the best plan to assign customers to each opened DC. Unlike other studies in the extent literature, we use new concepts of reliability to model the strategic behavior of DCs and customers at the network: (1) Failure of DCs might be partial, i.e. a disrupted DC might still be able to serve with a portion of its initial capacity (2) The lost capacity of a disrupted DC shall be provided from a non-disrupted one and (3) The lost capacity fraction of a disrupted DC depends on its initial investment amount in the design phase. In order to solve the proposed model optimally, a modified version of Benders’ Decomposition (BD) is applied. This modification tackles the difficulties of the BD’s master problem (MP), which ultimately improves the solution time of BD significantly. The classical BD approach results in low density cuts in some cases, Covering Cut Bundle (CCB) generation addresses this issue by generating a bundle of cuts instead of a single cut, which could cover more decision variables of the MP. Our inspiration to improve the CCB generation led to a new method, namely Maximum Density Cut (MDC) generation. MDC is based on the observation that in some cases CCB generation is cumbersome to solve in order to cover all decision variables of the MP rather than to cover part of them. Thus the MDC method generates a cut to cover the remaining decision variables which are not covered by CCB. Numerical experiments demonstrate the practicability of the proposed model to be promising in the SCND area, also the modified BD approach decreases the number of BD iterations and improves the CPU times, significantly.  相似文献

Forced convection with viscous dissipation in a parallel plate channel filled by a saturated porous medium is investigated numerically. Three different viscous dissipation models are examined. Two different sets of wall conditions are considered: isothermal and isoflux. Analytical expressions are also presented for the asymptotic temperature profile and the asymptotic Nusselt number. With isothermal walls, the Brinkman number significantly influences the developing Nusselt number but not the asymptotic one. At constant wall heat flux, both the developing and the asymptotic Nusselt numbers are affected by the value of the Brinkman number. The Nusselt number is sensitive to the porous medium shape factor under all conditions considered.  相似文献
