Insertion Reactions of Carbon Disulfide into Mg‐C and Mg‐N Bonds: Syntheses and Structural Determinations of Mg(S2CY)2(THF)n(Y=NEt2, NiPr2, iPr,Ph) and BrMg(S2CZ)(THF)3(Z=Ph,iPr)

The insertion reaction of CS₂ with Mg(NR₂)₂ (R= Et, ⁱPr), MgR′₂ (R′= Et, Ph) and R″MgBr (R″= ⁱPr, Ph) respectively lead solid products, Mg(S₂CNR₂)₂(THF)_n ( 1 : R= Et, n=2; 2 : R= ⁱPr, n=1), Mg(S₂C′R)₂(THF)₂ ( 3 : ′R= Et, 4 : ′R= Ph), BrMg(S₂C″R) (THF)₃ ( 5 : ″R= ⁱPr, 6 : ″R= Ph) in which the inserted carbon disulfides act as terminal chelating ligands. These compounds were characterized with ¹H, ¹³C NMR, IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elemental analyses, and X‐ray crystallography.

A Novel Niobium Cluster Aqua Ion with Capping μ4‐Se Ligand

The aqueous solution chemistry of niobium is underexplored, and well characterized aqua complexes are scarce. In this contribution, a new niobium aqua complex was obtained by treatment of Zn‐reduced ethanolic solution of NbCl₅ with HCl in the presence of a selenide source (ZnSe). This is the first example of selenium containing aqua complex of niobium. The yellow‐green aqua complex was isolated by cation‐exchange chromatography and transformed into corresponding isothiocyanate complex by ligand exchange, which was crystallized as (PyH)_4.5[H_1.5Nb₄SeO₅(NCS)₁₀] · 0.5H₂O. X‐ray structural analysis revealed a metal‐metal bonded tetranuclear {Nb₄(μ₄‐Se)(μ₂‐O)₅}⁴⁺ core with a capping μ₄‐Se ligand.     

A tridentate CNO‐donor palladium(II) complex as efficient catalyst for direct C―H arylation: Application in preparation of imidazole‐based push–pull chromophores

A series of imidazolium chlorides for the formation of tridentate CNO‐donor palladium(II) complexes featuring N‐heterocyclic carbene moieties have been developed from cheap and readily available starting materials with high yields. Their palladium complexes were prepared by reactions between the ligand precursors and PdCl₂ using K₂CO₃ as base in pyridine with reasonable yields. These air‐stable metal complexes were characterized using ¹H NMR and ¹³C{¹H} NMR spectroscopy and elemental analyses. Heteronuclear multiple bond correlation experiments were performed to identify key NMR signals of these compounds. The structures of two of the complexes were also established by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis. One of these complexes was successfully applied in the direct C―H functionalization reactions between heterocyclic compounds and aryl bromides, producing excellent yields of coupled products. The coupling reactions were scalable, allowing grams of coupled products to be obtained with a mere 2 mol% of Pd loading. The catalyst system developed allowed the large‐scale preparation of several push–pull chromophores straightforwardly. Photophysical properties based on UV–visible and fluorescence spectroscopy for these chromophores were investigated. Deep blue photoluminescence with moderate quantum efficiency and twisted intramolecular charge transfer excited state were observed for these chromophores. Density functional theory (DFT) and time‐dependent DFT calculations were performed to support the experimental results.     

Optimizing Antimicrobial Peptide Dendrimers in Chemical Space

We used nearest‐neighbor searches in chemical space to improve the activity of the antimicrobial peptide dendrimer (AMPD) G3KL and identified dendrimer T7 , which has an expanded activity range against Gram‐negative pathogenic bacteria including Klebsiellae pneumoniae, increased serum stability, and promising activity in an in vivo infection model against a multidrug‐resistant strain of Acinetobacter baumannii. Imaging, spectroscopic studies, and a structural model from molecular dynamics simulations suggest that T7 acts through membrane disruption. These experiments provide the first example of using virtual screening in the field of dendrimers and show that dendrimer size does not limit the activity of AMPDs.     

Density Functional Study on the Reactivity of Carbenes Toward 1,2‐H Shifts

The 1,2‐H shift reactions of simple carbenes (CH₂Y‐C‐X) have been studied using density functional theory (DFT). The influence of the substituent X and Y groups on the activation energy (Ea) of 1,2‐H shifts were examined. The ‘by stander’ Y substituents lower E_a in the order of Me, F > Cl, Br > H. Our analysis shows that the X effect is more significant than the by stander Y effect. X substitutions increase E_a of carbenes in the order of F > Cl > Br > Me > H. The influence of X on E_a is governed by the singlet‐triplet energy separation (ΔE_S‐T) of the carbene, i.e., E_a of a carbene is larger as its ΔE_S‐T in creases due to an X substitution. The X effect was also found to be related to the magnitude of the exothermicity: Ea of reaction is smaller when the reaction is more exothermic. Origin of the Y effect is attributed to the inter play between two factors: ‘lateness’ of transition state on the potential energy surface, and the exothermicity of the reaction.     

Synthesis of the Chiral Pair of a Novel Thromboxane Antagonist, 3‐[2‐(3‐Benzenesulfonylamino‐7‐oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept‐2‐yl‐methyl)phenyl] Propionic Acid

Preparation of the enantiomeric pair of 3‐[2‐(3‐benzenesulfonylamino‐7‐oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept‐2‐yl‐methyl)phenyl] propionic acid, a novel thromboxane antagonist is reported. They are synthesized from either enantiomers of known (1R,2R,3R,4S)‐3‐[2‐(3‐carboxy‐7‐oxabicyclo[2,2,1]hept‐2‐yl‐methyl)phenyl]‐propionic acid methyl ester via epimerization, modified Curtius' rearrangement and sulfonylamino formation. Other derivatives may be prepared similarly.     

The kinetics of cation exchange reaction of europium propylenediaminetetraacetate with ytterbium ion

The kinetics of cation exchange reaction of Eu(III) propylenediaminetetraacetate with Yb(III) has been studied in an aqueous solution by the polarographic procedure. The measurements were made at 25°C and at an ionic strength of 0.5 M KCl. The dissociation of the europium complex has been found to be catalyzed by hydrogen ions. The influences of the inductive effect and the steric hindrance of a C-methyl group on the ethylene of PDTA are discussed by comparing it to analogous EDTA and CyDTA system.     

Enhanced Optical Image Verification Based on Joint Transform Correlator Adopting Fourier Hologram

In this paper two new architectures for optical image verification are proposed. Both architectures are based on conventional joint transform correlators (JTCs) adopting a Fourier hologram and can significantly improve the recovered image quality. First, an input phase-only function is Fourier transformed and then interferes with a reference wave that is diffracted from a plane wave incident on another random phase mask. Second, two phase-only functions are placed at the two input sides of a beamsplitter such that the interference pattern of their Fourier transforms can be detected. To obtain a predefined target image in the output plane, one of the input phase functions is iteratively retrieved by the use of the projection onto constraint sets algorithm. Simulation results show that the less mean squared error and better image quality are obtained for both the binary and grayscale images.
