The combustion characteristics of freely falling droplets, individually generated by the merging of colliding methanol and alkane droplets, were investigated and compared with those for pure methanol and alkanes. The merging of the nominally immiscible methanol and alkanes was manifested in an apparently adhesive, but unmixed, manner in all test conditions. An air bubble was found to be trapped at the colliding interfaces where they were “adhered,” with the trapping favored for head-on or near head-on collision orientations. The trapped air bubble ostensibly induced heterogeneous nucleation of the methanol, being facilitated by the relatively low limit of superheat of methanol. Consequently, the droplet exploded almost immediately upon ignition, leading to an extremely short overall lifetime. For collision orientations that were more off-centered, bubble trapping and thereby heterogeneous nucleation were not favored. However, delayed, albeit strong, microexplosion occurred through homogeneous nucleation of methanol at the contacting interface. The global burning rate was therefore again augmented. In general, microexplosion was facilitated for high-boiling-point alkanes such as hexadecane and tetradecane. The co-vaporization of methanol and alkane from their respective hemispherical segments constituting the adhered droplet also led to flame colors that were more bluish than yellowish, indicating the reduction of soot from alkane burning in the presence of methanol vapor. In light of the difficulty of forming stable methanol/oil emulsions, the potential of separate injection of oil and methanol in opposed jet arrangement, in direct-injection engines to facilitate collision, is suggested.  相似文献

The cutting of a microstructured polymer optical fibre to form an optical end-face is studied. The effect of the temperature and speed of the cutting blade on the end-face is qualitatively assessed and it is found that for fibres at temperatures in the range 70-90 °C, a blade at a similar temperature moving at a speed of less than 0.5 mm/s produces a good quality end-face. The nature of the damage caused by the cutting process was examined and found to vary with fibre temperature, blade quality and cut depth. Thermo-mechanical analysis showed that the drawn material was significantly more visco-elastic than the annealed raw material in the 70-90 °C temperature range. The behaviour of the surface damage with cut depth was found to be consistent with the behaviour of a visco-elastic material.  相似文献

This study reports the effect of vertical baffles on the group D powder mixing and drying characteristics in a batch fluidized bed dryer. Results obtained in this study showed that operating the fluidized bed dryer with vertical baffles gave better particle mixing. This is due to the fact that the vertical baffles acted to limit the growth of small bubbles into large bubbles and the small bubbles caused more vigorous mixing in the bed of particles before finally erupting at the bed surface. Thus, insertion of vertical baffles is a useful way to process group D particles in a fluidized bed, especially when the fluidized bed is large.  相似文献

Described herein is a general and mild catalytic asymmetric 1,6‐conjugate addition of para‐quinone methides (p‐QMs), a class of challenging reactions with previous limited success. Benefiting from chiral Brønsted acid catalysis, which allows in situ formation of p‐QMs, our reaction expands the scope to general p‐QMs with various substitution patterns. It also enables efficient intermolecular formation of all‐carbon quaternary stereocenters with high enantioselectivity.  相似文献

In this work we propose a new method for investigating connection problems for the class of nonlinear second‐order differential equations known as the Painlevé equations. Such problems can be characterized by the question as to how the asymptotic behaviours of solutions are related as the independent variable is allowed to pass towards infinity along different directions in the complex plane. Connection problems have been previously tackled by a variety of methods. Frequently these are based on the ideas of isomonodromic deformation and the matching of WKB solutions. However, the implementation of these methods often tends to be heuristic in nature and so the task of rigorising the process is complicated. The method we propose here develops uniform approximations to solutions. This removes the need to match solutions, is rigorous, and can lead to the solution of connection problems with minimal computational effort. Our method relies on finding uniform approximations of differ ential equations of the generic form as the complex‐valued parameter . The details of the treatment rely heavily on the locations of the zeros of the function F in this limit. If they are isolated, then a uniform approximation to solutions can be derived in terms of Airy functions of suitable argument. On the other hand, if two of the zeros of F coalesce as , then an approximation can be derived in terms of parabolic cylinder functions. In this paper we discuss both cases, but illustrate our technique in action by applying the parabolic cylinder case to the “classical” connection problem associated with the second Painlevé transcendent. Future papers will show how the technique can be applied with very little change to the other Painlevé equations, and to the wider problem of the asymptotic behavio ur of the general solution to any of these equations. Experiments were conducted to investigate the vortex formation process in gravity-driven starting jets at three Reynolds numbers ( 3,528 and 4,716, where D is the nozzle diameter, the average discharging velocity and ν the kinematic viscosity). Planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) was used to visualize the flow while particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to quantify the 2D velocity and vorticity fields. Vortex leapfrogging was found to appear at Re = 2,358, while pinch-off for the leading vortex was observed in the other two cases. Conditions for the vortex pinch-off appeared to be different from those found in the piston-driven starting jets. Although the leading vortex attained the maximum circulation and energy level very quickly after the jet was initiated, its detachment from the main stem may not be achieved necessarily. Attempt had been made to elaborate the different flow characteristics for respective cases from the related distribution of circulation and energy level via the measured velocity field by PIV.  相似文献

Enantioselective CE with sulfated cyclodextrins as chiral selectors was used to determine the CYP3A4-catalyzed N-demethylation kinetics of ketamine to norketamine and its inhibition in the presence of ketoconazole in vitro. Ketamine, a chiral phencyclidine derivative, was incubated with recombinant human CYP3A4 from a baculovirus expression system as racemic mixture and as single enantiomer. Alkaline liquid/liquid extracts of the samples were analyzed with a pH 2.5 buffer comprising 50 mM Tris and phosphoric acid together with either multiple isomer sulfated β-cyclodextrin (10 mg/mL) or highly sulfated γ-cyclodextrin (2%, w/v). Data obtained in the absence of ketoconazole revealed that the N-demethylation occurred stereoselectively with Michaelis-Menten (incubation of racemic ketamine) and Hill (separate incubation of single enantiomers) kinetics. Data generated in the presence of ketoconazole as the inhibitor could best be fitted to a one-site competitive model and inhibition constants were calculated using the equation of Cheng and Prusoff. No stereoselective difference was observed, but inhibition constants for the incubation of racemic ketamine were found to be larger compared with those obtained with the incubation of single ketamine enantiomers.  相似文献
