Processing and characterization of Pb(Mg,Nb)O3-PbTiO3 thin films from metal alkoxide-derived gels

The sol-gel processing is one of promising methods to fabricate well-derived integrated thin films at relatively low temperature. Ferroelectric niobates films do afford the possibilities for adding the values by the hybridization with semiconductor and/or electro-optic systems. The molecular level designing of the precursor solution was stressed as well as the control of key processing factors. The advantages of this sol-gel have been extended to prepare the ferroelectric Pb(Mg, Nb)O₃-PbTiO₃ solid solution films integrated on Si wafers. The crystallization of the films with desired crystal structure could be promoted by the controlled partial hydrolysis of designed alkoxide solution in the intermediate state and the pre-heated treatment of alkoxide-derived films in flow of water vapor and oxygen gas mixture.     

Determination of cyclosporin A in the serum of kidney transplant patients by rapid-flow fractionation and normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography

High-performance liquid chromatography was used to determine cyclosporin A (CsA) concentrations in the serum of kidney transplant patients by rapid-flow fractionation (RFF) followed by silica gel normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The extraction of CsA from serum was achieved by RFF using a short diatomaceous earth column eluted with diethyl ether-n-hexane (50:50, v/v). The recovery was more than 80% at concentrations of 50-150 micrograms/l. The concentration of this compound was determined by HPLC using a conventional silica gel column with 3.3 M ammonia solution-ethanol-n-hexane (0.31:10.69:89, v/v) as eluent. Concentration calibration was made on the basis of the peak-height ratio of CsA to CsD as the internal standard. The coefficient of variation of this assay was less than 6.5% and the results were used for the therapeutic drug monitoring of CsA administered to kidney transplant patients. Measurements of the CsA concentrations in 160 serum specimens were also made by conventional radioimmunoassay (RIA) using commercial kits. The data obtained by RIA were on average 2.5 times those obtained by HPLC. Higher values in RIA were observed characteristically with patients with severe disfunction resulting from CsA hepatotoxicity. From the results, it appeared that HPLC rather than RIA provides more precise and reliable values for the concentration of this drug.     

Nickel-catalyzed 1,4-addition of trialkylboranes to alpha,beta-unsaturated esters: dramatic enhancement by addition of methanol

[reaction: see text] Nickel catalyst systems for 1,4-addition of trialkylboranes to alpha,beta-unsaturated esters have been developed. Addition of methanol was found to be essential for the alkylation reaction with 9-alkyl-9-BBNs.     

Ab initio molecular orbital study of ground and low-lying electronic states of CoCN

The ground and low-lying excited states of CoCN have been studied by ab initio multireference single and double excitation configuration interaction (MR-SDCI) calculations with Davidson's correction Q and Cowan-Griffin's relativistic corrections. The electronic ground state of CoCN is (3)Phi(i) and the equilibrium geometry is linear with bond lengths of r(e)(Co-C)=1.8540 A and r(e)(C-N)=1.1677 A, substantially different from the experimentally derived values of r(0)(Co-C)=1.8827(7) A and r(0)(C-N)=1.1313(10) A. The first excited state is (3)Delta(i), separated from the ground state by 727 cm(-1). Larger dynamical electron correlation energy for the low-spin (3)Phi state than for the high-spin (5)Phi state makes the (3)Phi state to be the ground state, which is discussed in terms of the differences in natural orbitals. A new spin-orbit interaction scheme between the X (3)Phi(i) and 1 (3)Delta(i) states is proposed.     

Theoretical study of the double Renner effect for A2Pi MgNC/MgCN: higher excited rovibrational states

The authors report here the implementation of a newly developed, highly efficient matrix diagonalization routine in the DR program [T. E. Odaka et al., J. Mol. Struct. 795, 14 (2006)]. The DR program solves the rovibronic Schrodinger equation for a triatomic molecule with a double Renner effect, i.e., with two accessible linear arrangements of the nuclei at which the electronic energy is doubly degenerate. With the new routines, the authors can extend the DR calculations of rovibronic energies for A 2Pi MgNC/MgCN by considering a much larger set of rovibronic states, in particular, states at higher J values, than the authors were able to access previously.     

Cytotoxicity of asymmetric platinum complexes against L-1210 cells. Effect of bulky substituents

The asymmetric platinum complexes cis-Pt(LL')Cl2 (L = NH3, L' = CH3NH2, (CH3)2NH, C2H5NH2 and (C2H5)2NH and LL' = N,N-dimethylethylenediamine),--one of the NH3 groups of cis-Pt(NH3)2Cl2 was substituted by alkylamine--, were synthesized and their cytotoxic effects have been measured using L-1210 cells. The IC50 values of the asymmetric platinum complexes,--being obtained after 24 h exposure of L-1210 cells to the platinum complexes--, are almost comparable to the corresponding value of cis-Pt(NH3)2Cl2. In 2 h exposure, however, the IC50 values of the platinum complexes were dramatically changed, i.e., a marked difference was observed between those of L' = RNH2 and L' = R2NH. On the other hand, the amounts of platinum taken into the L-1210 cells is little affected by the alkylamino substitution. The results suggest that the bifunctional platinum binding to the target molecule may be responsible for the cytotoxicity.     

Microsequencing of proteins electrotransferred onto immobilizing matrices from polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis: application to an insoluble protein

Semidry electroblotting is convenient and allows a rapid and efficient protein transfer from one- or two-dimensional polyacrylamide gels onto sequencer stable supports for protein microsequence analysis in a gas-phase sequencer. Using this technique, we determined the amino acid sequences of the basic 7S globulin (Bg), an insoluble protein present in soybean seeds. Based on sequence determination, the cDNA-encoding Bg could be easily cloned and characterized.     

Orientation control of perovskite thin films on glass substrates by the application of a seed layer prepared from oxide nanosheets

Orientation control of perovskite compounds was investigated by the application of a seed layer prepared from oxide nanosheets. An aqueous suspension of oxide nanosheets was prepared by the exfoliation of a layered compound of KCa₂Nb₃O₁₀ oxide grains. A seed layer composed of (TBA)Ca₂Nb₃O₁₀ nanosheets (TBA = tetrabutylammonium) was formed on a glass substrate by simply dip coating it in the suspension. Two kinds of perovskite compounds, LaNiO₃ (LNO) and Pb(Zr,Ti)O₃ (PZT) with a preferred orientation of (00l) were successfully grown on this seeded glass substrate. In this study, the relation between lattice mismatch and electrical properties is investigated. A large, oriented PZT film with a size of 5 ×4 cm shows an improved P-E hysteresis behavior by use of this orientation control.
