The glycosylation properties of gulopyranosides have been mapped out, and it is shown that gulose has an intrinsic preference for the formation of 1,2-cis-glycosidic bonds. It is postulated that this glycosylation behaviour originates from nucleophilic attack at the oxacarbenium ion, which adopts the most favourable 3H4 conformation. Building on the stereoselectivity of gulose, a guluronic acid alginate trisaccharide was assembled for the first time by using gulopyranosyl building blocks. 相似文献

In this paper, the mass transfer coefficients for trichloroethylene (TCE), toluene (TOL) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) are experimentally determined for different porous and composite membranes. For polypropylene/polyvinylidenedifluoride porous layer/thin film polydimethylsiloxane dense layer composite membranes, membrane mass transfer coefficients are 2.55E−03, 2.82E−03 and 2.90E−03 m/s for TCE, TOL and DMS in N2 at 30.0 ± 0.1 °C, respectively. For polyester/polyacrylonitrile porous layer/thin film polydimethylsiloxane dense layer composite membranes, they are higher, namely 4.28E−03, 4.55E−03 and 4.81E−03 m/s for TCE, TOL and DMS in N2 at 30.0 ± 0.1 °C, respectively. Analysis of the contribution of the dense layer of both composite membranes to the total membrane resistance for mass transfer, showed that this contribution was small for both composite membranes. The higher mass transfer coefficients of the thin film polydimethylsiloxane composite membranes from this study in comparison to others from the literature are primarily due to improvement of the mass transfer characteristics of the porous layer. Analysis of the mass transfer characteristics of the different porous layers of which the total porous layer is composed, showed that the contribution of the porous “backing” layer for mechanical support can be substantial in comparison to the porous layer in contact with the dense layer. 相似文献

The diffusion coefficient of the self-assembled supramolecular cluster [Ga4L6]12- depends on the cationic counterions in solution. Diffusion coefficients were determined using the pulsed-gradient spin-echo 1H NMR method and fit using nonlinear least-squares refinement. Saturation studies revealed a small number of ion-association sites on the exterior of the assembly and the direct observation of ion association in water. The addition of excess alkali-metal cations displaces the ion-associated hydrophobic tetra-alkyl-ammonium cations. Comparisons between tetraethyl- and tetra-propyl-ammonium show a preference for ion association with the more hydrophobic cation. 相似文献

This paper presents a detailed study on the calibration of a thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS)-based methodology for quantification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gaseous and liquid samples. For the first time, it is documented to what extent three widely encountered problems affect precise and accurate quantification, and solutions to improve calibration are proposed. The first issue deals with the limited precision in MS quantification, as exemplified by high relative standard deviations (up to 40%, n=5) on response factors of a set of 69 selected VOCs in a volatility range from 16 Pa to 85 kPa at 298 K. The addition of [(2)H(8)]toluene as an internal standard, in gaseous or liquid phase, improves this imprecision by a factor of 5. Second, the matrix in which the standard is dissolved is shown to be highly important towards calibration. Quantification of gaseous VOCs loaded on a sorbent tube using response factors obtained with liquid standards results in systematic deviations of 40-80%. Relative response factors determined by the analysis of sorbent tubes loaded with both analytes and [(2)H(8)]toluene from liquid phase are shown to offer a reliable alternative for quantification of airborne VOCs, without need for expensive and often hardly available gaseous standards. Third, a strategy is proposed involving the determination of a relative response factor being representative for a group of analytes with similar functionalities and electron impact fragmentation patterns. This group method approach indicates to be useful (RSD approximately 10%) for quantifying analytes belonging to that class but having no standards available. 相似文献

The pressure-drop characteristics of six sub-2 microm columns of three different manufacturers but with the same surface chemistry (C(18)) have been studied using the recently introduced total pore blocking method for the determination of the external porosity and by using scanning electron microscopy pictures to measure the actual size of the particles. Having used the Sauter-mean particle size to correctly account for the particle size spread, and having corrected for the influence of the intra-particle porosity, it was found that all columns yielded Kozeny-Carman constant (f(KC)) values close to 180, in agreement with the theory. This agreement could subsequently be used to quantify how the different system parameters such as mean particle size, packing density and intra-particle porosity (all tending to vary significantly from manufacturer to manufacturer) each contributes to the observed total bed permeability. Small (upward) deviations from the f(KC)=180-value could be correlated to a larger width of the particle size distribution, and more notably to the existence of a high size ratio of the largest to the smallest particles present in the particle batches. 相似文献

The majority of attention on the impact of anthropogenic noise on marine mammals has focused on low-frequency episodic activities. Persistent sources of mid-frequency noise pollution are less well studied. To address this data gap, the contribution of 25 physical, biological and anthropogenic factors to the ambient noise levels in the Wilmington, North Carolina Intracoastal Waterway were analyzed using a principal components analysis and least squares regression. The total number of recreational vessels passing through the waterway per hour is the factor that had the single greatest influence on environmental noise levels. During times of high boat traffic, anthropogenic noise is continuous rather than episodic, and occurs at frequencies that are biologically relevant to bottlenose dolphins. As a daily part of resident bottlenose dolphins' acoustic environment, recreational boating traffic may represent a chronic source of acoustic harassment. 相似文献

The social context of noise exposure is a codeterminant of noise annoyance. The present study shows that fairness of the exposure procedure (sound management) can be used as an instrument to reduce noise annoyance. In a laboratory experiment (N = 117) participants are exposed to aircraft sound of different sound pressure level (SPL: 50 vs 70 dB A)--which is experienced as noise--while they work on a reading task. The exposure procedure (fair versus neutral) is modeled in line with findings from social justice theory. In the fair condition, participants can voice their preference for a certain sound sample, although they cannot deduce whether their preference is granted. In the neutral condition, participants are not asked to voice their preference. Results show the predicted interaction effect of sound pressure level and procedure on annoyance: Annoyance ratings are significantly lower in the fair condition than in the neutral condition, but this effect is found only in the 70 dB condition. When the SPL is considerably disturbing, fair procedures reduce noise annoyance. Consequences of the reported findings for both theory and practice are discussed. 相似文献

The failure to produce and/or crystallize proteins is often due to their modular structure. There exists therefore considerable interest to develop strategies for tailoring proteins into crystallizable domains. In the framework of a Structural Genomics Project on soluble yeast proteins, we have tested the expression of numerous genetic constructs of our targets in order to produce and crystallize proteins and protein domains and solve their three-dimensional structure. In some cases, the choice of the domain boundaries was guided by prediction from sequence using various software packages, including Prelink, a home-made prediction method for detecting unfolded regions. In other cases, large numbers of constructs were generated using molecular biology or biochemical methods. In this paper, we analyze the results of the over-expression in E. coli and crystallization of these constructs, and compare these with the predictions that can be obtained from our software and from others. 相似文献
