Soft X-ray recombination laser research at the Institute of LaserEngineering

Soft X-ray laser experiments recently carried out using the Gekko MII glass laser facility at the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University, are described. Hydrogenic and lithiumlike lasing schemes in recombining plasmas were investigated using foil targets exploded with line-focused 532 nm laser radiation of approximately 100 J energy. In a preliminary study, time-integrated emissions of Balmer-α transitions in C⁸⁺ and O⁷⁺ and 5-3 transitions in Al¹⁰⁺ were found to increase nonlinearly with increasing target length, yielding gain coefficients of G=0.9 to 2.3 cm ^-1. In a subsequent, more refined study, which included time-resolved measurements, the authors obtained a gain of G=2 cm^-1 and a gain-length product GL=3 for the Balmer-α transition in F⁸⁺ at 80.9 Å     

A Submillimeter Homodyne Transmit and Receive System (HTRS) for detecting weak signals from reflectors

A Submillimetre Homodyne Transmit and Receive System has been developed to operate in the 500–2000 GHz region. The system is based around an Optically Pumped Submillimetre laser system and an optical processing system. The system will be described along with our test results which show detectivities of better than –130dBm at 693GHz.     

Dynamics of ion—molecule processes: A crossed-beam study of the reaction B+(3P) + H2 → BH+ + H

Dynamics of the reaction B⁺(³P) + H₂ → BH⁺ + H has been studied in crossed-beam scattering experiments in the collision-energy range 0.6–2.3 eV (c.m.). Scattering diagrams obtained show that in the reaction both the ground state BH⁺(²Σ⁺) and the excited state BH⁺(² Π) (if energetically accessible) are formed; both states are formed via intermediate complexes whose mean lifetimes are of the order of 10^?13 s and decrease with increasing collision energy, as reflected in the decreasing forward-backward symmetry of the scattering diagrams.     

The vibrational analysis of someN- andN,N′-monosubstituted oxamide complexes

Summary The vibrational spectra of someN- andN-N-monosubstituted oxamide complexes with Ni^II are presented. The vibrational analysis is given for a planarC _2h structure for eight isotopes of theN-methyloxamide derivative. The Et, Pr, Bu, cyclo-Pr and i-Bu derivatives give analogous complexes. Octahedral Ni^II complexes have been prepared withN,N-di-methyloxamide.Presented in part at XX I.C.C.C. Calcutta 1980.
