Boundary layer flow of a Jeffrey fluid with convective boundary conditions

The boundary layer stretched flow of a Jeffrey fluid subject to the convective boundary conditions was investigated. The governing dimensionless problems were computed by using the homotopy analysis approach. Convergence of the derived solutions was checked and the influence of embedded parameters was analyzed by plotting graphs. It was noticed that the velocity increases with an increase in the Deborah number. Furthermore, it was found that the temperature is also an increasing function of the Biot number. We further found that for fixed values of other parameters, the local Nusselt number increases by increasing the suction parameter and Deborah number. Numerical values of the skin friction coefficient and local Nusselt numbers were computed and examined. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Synthesis, antifungal, and phytotoxic effects of some benzopyrone derivatives

Syntheses of benzopyrones 1, 13, and their derivatives, as well as their phytotoxic (in vitro) and antifungal (in vitro) screening was carried out. Compounds 2, 7, 8, and 10 showed significant phytotoxic activity, whereas 3, 8, 10, and 12 exhibited significant antifungal (in vitro) activity.     

CsF-Celite, an Efficient Solid State Reagent for the Syntheses of Thioesters and Thioethers

Coupling reactions of a number of aliphatic, aromatic, and heterocyclic compounds bearing an acidic hydrogen atom attached to sulfur, with alkyl, acyl, benzyl, or benzoyl halides in acetonitrile with cesium fluoride-Celite are described. This procedure is convenient, efficient, and practical for the preparation of thioethers and thioesters.     

An electrochemical immunosensor based on covalent immobilization of okadaic acid onto screen printed carbon electrode via diazotization-coupling reaction

In this work, an electrochemical method based on the diazonium-coupling reaction mechanism for the immobilization of okadaic acid (OA) on screen printed carbon electrode was developed. At first, 4-carboxyphenyl film was grafted by electrochemical reduction of 4-carboxyphenyl diazonium salt, followed by terminal carboxylic group activation by N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS), N-(3-dimethylaminopropyle)-N′-ethyle-carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC). Hexamethyldiamine was then covalently bound by one of its terminal amine group to the activated carboxylic group. The carboxyl group of okadaic acid was activated by EDC/NHS and then conjugated to the second terminal amine group on other side of the hexamethyldiamine through amide bond formation. After immobilization of OA, an indirect competitive immunoassay format was employed to detect OA. The immunosensor obtained using this novel approach allowed detection limit of 1.44 ng/L of OA, and was also validated with certified reference mussel samples.

This study describes the influence of mass transfer on the steady two‐dimensional magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer flow of a Jeffery fluid bounded by a stretching sheet. A uniform magnetic field in the presence of chemical reaction is applied. The arising nonlinear partial differential equations are reduced to nonlinear ordinary differential equations by similarity variables. Similar solutions of velocity and concentration fields are derived by a homotopy analysis method. The values of surface mass transfer and gradient of mass transfer are also tabulated. MHD peristaltic flow of a third order fluid in an asymmetric channel

This study is concerned with peristaltic flow of a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) fluid in an asymmetric channel. Asymmetry in the flow is induced by waves on the channel walls having different amplitudes and phase. A systematic approach based on an expansion of Deborah number is used for the solution series. Analytic expressions have been developed for the stream function, axial velocity and axial pressure gradient. The pressure rise over a wavelength has been addressed through numerical integration. Particular attention has been given to the effects of Hartman number and Deborah number on the pressure rise over a wavelength and the trapping phenomenon. Several limiting solutions of interest are obtained as the special cases of the presented analysis by taking the appropriate parameter(s) to be zero. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Effects of uranium stress on physiological and biochemical characteristics in seedlings of six common edible vegetables

The large-scale exploitation of uranium (U) not only causes radioactive pollution to the soil, but also has a great adverse effect on human health. However, the current understanding of the effects of U stress on organisms is not deep enough. As food sources of human beings, vegetables can enrich U into the human body along the food chain. Therefore, the effects of soil U on seed germination, seedling growth and physiological and biochemical characteristics of six common edible vegetables (tomato, cucumber, kohlrabi, radish, cabbage, and spinach) were investigated. The results show that the toxicity of U to the six vegetables in sandy loam is cucumber?>?radish?>?spinach?>?cabbage?>?tomato?>?kohlrabi. The lower U concentration in sandy loam has certain promoting effect on seed germination and root growth. The accumulation and tolerance capacity of cucumber and radish to U in sandy loam is stronger than that of other four vegetables, which may be used as candidate species for biological treatment of U pollution. These results provide theoretical basis for clarifying the biological effects and toxicological mechanism of U pollution, and also provide theoretical basis for scientific prevention and control of soil U pollution.
