Study of the charge-exchange reactions\pi ^ - p \to (\pi ^0 ,\eta ,\eta \prime )n at 63 GeV

Muon electron pairs were detected in an Al multiplate spark chamber, exposed to a neutrino beam from the CERN PS. The leptons were not accompanied by other particles, except occasionally by protons. The background came mainly from muon associated π⁰ production, with one decay gamma lost. It was determined empirically, together with the small contribution from υ _e reactions. For electron energies above 2 GeV the background is 5.7±1.5 events, whereas 18 (μe)-candidates have been observed. Hence the effect is established, with a rate of about 10^?4 as compared to the muonic reactions above 3 GeV. Charm creation as the origin of this (μe)-production process is excluded; heavy neutral lepton production does not fit the kinematics observed. Instead the events are compatible with the two-body decay of an object with variable invariant mass of order 1 GeV, possibly resulting from axion interactions.     

Estimating a reduced rank regression model for non-normal variables

A method using third order moments for estimating the regression coefficients as well as the latent state scores of the reduced-rank regression model when the latent variable(s) are non-normally distributed is presented in this paper. It is shown that the factor analysis type indeterminacy of the regression coefficient matrices is eliminated. A real life example of the proposed method is presented. Differences of this solution with the reduced-rank regression eigen solution are discussed.     

Three New Polyoxygenated Steroids from Two Species of the South China Sea Gorgonian Muricella flexuosa and Menella verrucosa Brundin

Three new polyoxygenated steroids, muricesteroid ( 1 ), and menellsteroids A ( 2 ) and B ( 3 ), were isolated from two species of the South China Sea gorgonian Muricella flexuosa and Menella verrucosa Brundin , respectively. The structures of these new compounds were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis, chemical methods and comparison with known related compounds.     

Anomale änderungen physikalischer Eigenschaften beim heterogenen Zerfall übersättigter Fe-Ni-Cu-Legierungen

Zusammenfassung Einige charakteristische ?nderungen physikalischer Werkstoffeigenschaften beim heterogenen Zerfall übers?ttigter Mischkristalle werden am Beispiel der fl?chenzentrierten Eisen-Nickel-Kupfer-Legierungen beschrieben. Bei der Behandlung des Einflusses der Ausscheidungsvorg?nge auf die Rekristallisationserscheinungen tritt die Bedeutung des übers?ttigungsgrades der zerfallenden festen L?sung für den Ablauf dieser Zustands?nderungen besonders klar zutage. Kritische Stadien der Ausscheidung und der Koagulation der heterogenen Phasen sind bei diesen Legierungen für die Erzeugung besonders hochwertiger magnetischer Eigenschaften verantwortlich. Radiochemical proton activation analysis for the determination of cadmium and lead in sediment reference materials

Proton activation analysis was used for the determination of cadmium and lead in three sediment reference materials. The method is based on the^111,112Cd(p, xn)¹¹¹ In and the^206,207,208Pb(p, xn)²⁰⁶Bi reactions.¹¹¹In and²⁰⁶Bi were chemically separated by anion exchange. The results obtained were taken into account for the certification of the materials and are in the excellent agreement with the certified values.     

Assay of vecuronium in plasma using solid-phase extraction, high-performance liquid chromatography and post-column ion-pair extraction with fluorimetric detection

An assay has been developed and validated for the routine monitoring of vecuronium in plasma. It consists of solid-phase extraction using C18 disposables as sample pre-treatment, high-performance liquid chromatography and post-column ion-pair extraction with fluorimetric detection. The fluorescent anion 9,10-dimethoxyanthracene-2-sulphonate (DAS) is used as the counter ion. The detection limit is ca. 5 ng/ml in plasma with a signal-to-noise ratio of 10. The assay is also applicable for monitoring vecuronium and its potential metabolites in other biological media, e.g., urine, bile and tissue (liver, kidney) homogenates.     

Bulk and microprobe analysis for trace elements with synchrotron radiation

Blood serum samples were irradiated by monochromatic synchrotron radiation (15 keV) and by 2.4-MeV protons to compare their performance for the detection of trace elements by x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry. Absolute concentration assignment was based on the addition of an internal standard and on a method which uses the incoherent and coherent radiation as a flux monitor of the incoming beam. Preliminary experiments with a synchrotron XRF microprobe are reported.

Study on the Binding Characteristic of S-Naproxen Imprinted Polymer and the Interactions between Templates and Monomers

S-naproxen imprinted polymer was prepared with acrylamide as a functional monomer, 1,4-butanediyl diacrylate as a new kind of crossliner, and 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoylphenyl-phosphinic acid ethyl ester as photoinitiator. Their UV and IR spectra were applied to study the interactions between the template and the monomer. Binding experiments showed that the S-naproxen imprinted polymer had better recognition capability for the template than that of a blank polymer. The adsorption distribution coefficient KD of S-naproxen on molecularly-imprinted polymer was 153.2 g/mL, and the separation factor was 1.95 when the initial concentration of substrate was 2.0 mmol/L. Scatchard curves suggested that there were two classes of binding sites in the imprinted polymer and only one class in the blank polymer. Computer simulation using Hyperchem showed the existence of the interactions between the template and the functional monomer as well as the models of the complexes formed by the template and the monomer.
