Solution conformational preferences of glutaric, 3‐hydroxyglutaric, 3‐methylglutaric acid,and their mono‐ and dianions

Conformational preferences of glutaric, 3‐hydroxyglutaric and 3‐methylglutaric acid, and their mono‐ and dianions have been investigated with the aid of NMR spectroscopy. In contrast to succinic acid, glutaric acid displays essentially statistical conformational equilibria in polar and non‐polar solutions of high and low hydrogen‐bonding ability with no clear evidence for intramolecular hydrogen‐bonding interactions. The acid ionization constant ratios, K ₁/K₂, in D₂O and DMSO of glutaric, 3‐hydroxyglutaric, and 3‐methylglutaric acids also indicate that intramolecular interactions are much less important than, or indeed insignificant, for shorter‐chain acids. FTIR studies on 3‐methylglutaric acid indicate some preference for either association with solvent or dimerization, depending on the solvent, rather than intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Applications of ligand-exchange-III Preparation and properties of phenol-formaldehyde-based resin in the iron(III) form

A number of resins containing ethylenediamine acetic acid groups have been prepared, and these intermediates (resin-EDTA) converted into the iron(III) form. The capacities of these exchangers in the formation of iron(III)-phenol complexes have been studied and compared with those of the Chelex-iron(III) resin. The character of the exchanger matrix is very important in connection with the retention of phenols and with the elution order. The modified Amberlite CG 4B in the iron(III) form can be used for the quantitative separation of phenolic compounds, a separation that is not possible with the Chelex-iron(III) resin.     

The application of centre manifolds to amplitude expansions. I. Ordinary differential equations

The theory of centre manifolds for a system of ordinary differential equations is summarized and its relationship to amplitude expansions based upon multiple time scales is discussed. Emphasis is placed upon the practical computational aspects of applying centre manifold theory to near-critical problems, and, in particular, to the computation of the centre manifold. The calculations are illustrated by a detailed analysis of two problems in fluid mechanics.     

Spectroscopic analysis of electrically polarized polyacrylonitrile

Electrically polarized and unpolarized films of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) have been investigated by both infrared attenuated total reflection (ATR) and thermally stimulated discharge (TSD). ATR analysis of PAN films has been aimed at explaining the molecular origin of thermally stimulated currents, and consequently that of phenomena contributing to electrical polarization in this material. Preferred orientation of nitrile dipoles along the thickness direction (applied electric field direction) has been detected by ATR in both polarized and unpolarized films. It is suggested that dipolar alignment in unpolarized solvent-cast films could result from internal electric fields associated with space charges. The observed orientational anisotropy is found to disappear gradually as films (both polarized and unpolarized) are heated from ambient temperature to 100°C and rotational motion in the backbone is thermally activated. TSD currents observed in this thermal range are thus associated with randomization of molecular dipoles. TSD currents observed above 100°C are suggested to originate from drift of space charges, since both an isotropic orientation of dipoles and onset of considerable diffusion are detected by ATR in this temperature range. PAN films polarized by high-intensity electric fields (5 × 10⁵Vcm^?1, as opposed to 5 × 10⁴Vcm^?1) are found to retain orientational anisotropy above 100°C, and this is believed to be associated with a structural rearrangement induced by electrical polarization.

Heat of formation of PraseodymiumBismuth alloys

In the PrBi system the heats of formation were measured using a direct isoperibol calorimeter. The composition and equilibrium state of the samples have been checked by chemical, metallographic and X-ray analyses. The following values were found for the two known compounds (reaction in the solid state, 300 K):

The results obtained, compared with those already achieved in other REBi systems, are briefly discussed.     

A prism reflector of anti-resonant ring configuration

Two identical prisms are combined to form an anti-resonant ring reflector, giving total reflection without the use of coatings or roof edges. When used as the total reflector in a Q-switched NdYAG laser this device has shown a damage threshold twice that of a multilayer reflector.
