Full verification of the liquid exclusion-adsorption chromatography theory using monolithic capillary columns

Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) was used to separate alkyl phenol ethoxylates (APEs) as model diblock copolymers, with monolithic polymers as stationary phases. The order of elution indicate that the two polymer blocks follow distinct chromatographic modes: size-exclusion for the poly(oxyethylene) group and adsorption interaction for the alkyl part. Therefore, our experimental results were compared to the theory describing liquid exclusion-adsorption chromatography (LEAC). They were found in perfect agreement with the theory, which turned to be verified for the first time over the full range of polymer lengths.     

Adsorption of Carbon Tetrachloride on Pyridinium Montmorillonite

Effect of substitution of Na⁺ by pyridinium on the surface and pore structures of montmorillonite is studied by CCl₄ vapor adsorption.     

On the equivalence between the energy and virial routes to the equation of state of hard-sphere fluids

The energy route to the equation of state of hard-sphere fluids is ill defined since the internal energy is just that of an ideal gas, and thus it is independent of density. It is shown that this ambiguity can be avoided by considering a square-shoulder interaction and taking the limit of vanishing shoulder width. The resulting hard-sphere equation of state coincides exactly with the one obtained through the virial route. Therefore, the energy and virial routes to the equation of state of hard-sphere fluids can be considered as equivalent.     

Thermal properties of tetrahydroperparine derivatives

The thermal behaviour of tetrahydroperparine (THP) and its derivatives with various acids has been investigated. The acid is liberated from the formate derivative basically in two steps, while the other aliphatic acids are released quantitatively before the thermal decomposition of the THP molecule. The thermoanalytical curves, electrical conductivity data measured in the molten phase, and infrared spectra prove that while part of the formic acid is hydrogen-bonded the other part is bound ionically in the molecule. It may be assumed that the marked biological activity of the compound can be explained by this difference in the nature of the bonds.     

Continuous Selective Heating of the Dispersion Medium in a Unit Constituted by Heater and Mass-Exchange Apparatus

A new method for heat exchange between dispersed flows and a unit for continuous selective heating, comprising a heater and a mass-exchange apparatus, was proposed. A mathematical model of the unit was developed for the cases of direct-flow and counterflow heaters. Analytical solutions to the model equations were obtained. The parameters affecting the result of continuous selective heating of the dispersion medium in the unit were determined.     

Isotopic difference in the second virial coefficient of water: Another test of the MCY-B description of water dimer thermodynamics

Evaluation has been carried out of the component of the second virial coefficient of steam related to the formation of dimers. The necessary equilibrium constants of dimerization have been evaluated within the MCY-B water pair interaction potential. The calculated isotopic difference in the second virial coefficient reflects the qualitative features found by observation but, nevertheless, the calculation quite distinctly overestimates the value of this isotopic difference as compared with the observation. The nature of these differences and the relation to the state behaviour of water are discussed.     

Acetylation of lagochilin

The acetylation of lagochilin and its derivatives with acetic anhydride in the presence of pyridine has been studied by PMR spectroscopy. It has been shown that the manifestation of the polyfunctionality of lagochilin in acetylation reactions with acetic anhydride is connected with a change in the nature of the process of solvation of the reaction forms with the subsequent replacement of the hydrogen atoms of the hydroxy groups by acetyl groups.V. Spectrophotometric determination of the protolytic dissociation constants of the new chromogenic reagent "palladiazo"-I Investigations with sodium hydroxide, perchloric acid and different aqueous buffer solutions

The "palladiazo" reagent has been subjected to a detailed spectrophotometric investigation in concentrated perchloric acid, different aqueous buffers and concentrated sodium hydroxide solutions. K(1)-K(10) and (1)-(10) values corresponding to the instability constants of the protolytic equilibria involved and to the molar absorptivities at 540 and 630 run of the different proton complex species of the system have been calculated by a number of analytical and graphical spectrophotometric methods. Special attention has been paid to the study of the complicated phenomena implied by the interaction of the reagent with perchloric acid, which has been shown to give rise to alteration of the initial isomeric composition of the reagent and to the formation of addition and/or oxidation products derived from side-reactions undergone by the reagent with the medium. All the instability constants and molar absorptivities, which have been determined by several methods, are tabulated for comparison.     

Preparation of block copolymers by use of peroxide-terminated prepolymer

Block copolymers containing poly(tetramethylene oxide) and poly(methyl methacrylate) segments were prepared. A commercially available poly(tetramethylene oxide) terminated with tolylene diisocyanate was capped with tert-butyl hydroxymethyl peroxide and the resulting prepolymer peroxide was used as a free-radical initiator of vinyl polymerization. Block copolymers formed in temperature-programmed vinyl polymerizations possessed improved impact strengths over poly(methyl methacrylate) from 0.35 to 1.18 for a fixed (nonoptimized) block length of poly(tetramethylene oxide).
