Chemical imaging in biology and medicine using ion microscopy

The ability to quantitatively map the distribution of elements on the micrometer scale and smaller with high sensitivity and isotopic discrimination is unique to ion microscopy. The information contained in ion images can be crucial to the study of the solid state, where chemical heterogeneity is often directly related to observed behavior. The tools of digital image processing allow the extraction of quantitative information from the image data. These techniques coupled with improved instrumentation for the detection of ion images drastically increase the problem solving capabilities of the ion microscope. The use of such methods and instrumentation in the ion microscopic analyses of cell cultures and tissues of biological and biomedical relevance will be discussed.     

Minimum Fill-in on Circle and Circular-Arc Graphs

We present two algorithms solving the minimum fill-in problem on circle graphs and on circular-arc graphs in timeO(n³).     

Edward Teller ninety

Edward Teller is a member of a very fortunate great generation. He was born into this exciting 20th century. As a university student he witnessed the birth of quantum mechanics, one of the boldest cultural venture of human spirit, and he actively participated in widening the realm of physics to chemistry and astrophysics. And he was one of the main actors in shaping the history of this century by realizing the potential power of modern physics. We greet him from his native country in the name of Hungarian physicists.     

Finite Abelian actions on surfaces

Edmonds showed that two free orientation preserving smooth actions φ₁ and φ₂ of a finite Abelian group G on a closed connected oriented smooth surface M are equivalent by an equivariant orientation preserving diffeomorphism iff they have the same bordism class [M,φ₁]=[M,φ₂] in the oriented bordism group Ω₂(G) of the group G. In this paper, we compute the bordism class [M,φ] for any such action of G on M and we determine for a given M, the bordism classes in Ω₂(G) that are representable by such actions of G on M. This will enable us to obtain a formula for the number of inequivalent such actions of G on M. We also determine the “weak” equivalence classes of such actions of G on M when all the p-Sylow subgroups of G are homocyclic (i.e. of the form n(Z/pαZ)).     

Multivariable identification and controller design of an integrated flight control system

This paper investigates the multivariable identification and controller design for the longitudinal channel of a Boeing 747 transport. The transfer function matrix of the system is identified using the prediction error (PE) identification method with multivariable ARX model. An ellipsoidal parametric uncertainty set is constructed from the covariance matrix of the identified parameters. It contains the parameters of actual system at a certain probability level. The identified models and the associated uncertainty sets are validated by measuring the worst-case ν-gap and then compared with the maximum value of the generalized stability margin. In automatic flight control system or autopilots, multiple specifications criteria are needed to be satisfied concurrently, such as good holding (small static altitude holding error), fast response, smooth transition (less oscillation, overshoot). The design of a Multiple Simultaneous Specifications (MSS) controller effectively and practically is a very significant and challenging job. Liu and Mills [H.H.T. Liu, J.K. Mills, Multiple specification design in flight control system, in: Proceedings of the American Control Conference, Chicago, Illinois, 2000, pp. 1365–1369] proposed a MSS controller design method using a convex combination approach. In this paper, we apply the method [H.H.T. Liu, J.K. Mills, Multiple specification design in flight control system, in: Proceedings of the American Control Conference, Chicago, Illinois, 2000, pp. 1365–1369; H.H.T. Liu, Design combination in integrated flight control, in: Proceedings of the American Control Conference, Arlington, Virginia, 2001, pp. 494–499; H.H.T. Liu, Multi-objective design for an integrated flight control system: a combination with model reduction approach, in: Proceedings of IEEE International Symposium on Computer Aided Control System Design, Glasgow, 2002, pp. 21–26] to design a MSS controller based on the identified models of the Boeing 747 transport aircraft longitudinal channel. The controllers are also validated by simulation using the true plant transfer functions.     

Discrete storage processes and their Poisson flow and fluid flow approximations

Consider discrete storage processes that are modulated by environmental processes. Environmental processes cause interruptions in the input and/or output processes of the discrete storage processes. Due to the difficulties encountered in the exact analysis of such discrete storage systems, often Poisson flow and/or fluid flow models with the same modulating environmental processes are proposed as approximations for these systems. The analysis of Poisson flow and fluid flow models is much easier than that of the discrete storage processes. In this paper we give sufficient conditions under which the content of the discrete storage processes can be bounded by the Poisson flow and the fluid flow models. For example, we show that Poisson flow models and the fluid flow models developed by Kosten (and by Anick, Mitra and Sondhi) can be used to bound the performance of infinite (finite) source packetized voice/data communication systems. We also show that a Poisson flow model and the fluid flow model developed by Mitra can be used to bound the buffer content of a two stage automatic transfer line. The potential use of the bounding techniques presented in this paper, of course, transcends well beyond these examples.Supported in part by NSF grant DMS-9308149.

A new class of long-tailed pausing time densities for the CTRW

We present some asymptotic results for the family of pausing time densities having the asymptotic (t) property(t) [t ln¹⁺(t/T)]^–1. In particular, we show that for this class of pausing time densities the mean-squared displacement r ²(t) is asymptotically proportional to ln(t/T), and the asymptotic distribution of the displacement has a negative exponential form.
