Synthesis of submicron CaZrO<Subscript>3</Subscript> in combustion reactions

Submicron CaZrO₃ powder is obtained in combustion reactions (solution combustion synthesis—SCS) with glycine. It is found that SCS reduces the sintering temperature of CaZrO₃ powders. The dielectric properties of calcium zirconate ceramics are studied by the electrochemical impedance method. It is shown that a ceramics of powders obtained by the SCS method has high dielectric characteristics.     

Amphiphilic block copolymer self‐assemblies of poly(NVP)‐b‐poly(MDO‐co‐vinyl esters): Tunable dimensions and functionalities

Functional, degradable polymers were synthesized via the copolymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) and 2‐methylene‐1,3‐dioxepane (MDO) using a macro‐xanthate CTA, poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone), resulting in the formation of amphiphilic block copolymers of poly(NVP)‐b‐poly(MDO‐co‐VAc). The behavior of the block copolymers in water was investigated and resulted in the formation of self‐assembled nanoparticles containing a hydrophobic core and a hydrophilic corona. The size of the resultant nanoparticles was able to be tuned with variation of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments of the core and corona by changing the incorporation of the macro‐CTA as well as the monomer composition in the copolymers, as observed by Dynamic Light Scattering, Static Light Scattering, and Transmission Electron Microscopy analyses. The concept was further applied to a VAc derivative monomer, vinyl bromobutanoate, to incorporate further functionalities such as fluorescent dithiomaleimide groups throughout the polymer backbone using azidation and “click” chemistry as postpolymerization tools to create fluorescently labeled nanoparticles. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Periodic Néel skyrmion transport

In this work, we have used the MuMax3 software to simulate devices consisting of a ferromagnetic thin film placed over a heavy metal thin film. The devices are two interconnected partial-disks where a Néel domain wall is formed in the disks junction. In our simulations we investigate devices with disk radius $r=50$ nm and different distance d between the disks centers (from $d=12$ nm to $d=2R=100$ nm). By applying strong sinusoidal external magnetic fields, we find a mechanism able to create, annihilate and even manipulate a skyrmion in each side of the device. This mechanism is discussed in terms of interactions between skyrmion and domain wall. The Néel domain wall formed in the center of the device interacts with the Néel skyrmion, leading to a process of transporting a skyrmion from one disk to the other periodically. Our results have relevance for potential applications in spintronics such as logical devices.     

Extraction-chromatographic behavior of Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) on TRU and LN resins in mixtures of HNO3 and HF

The behavior of group-4 homologs Zr and Hf on extraction-chromatographic sorbents LN resin and TRU resin in mixtures of HF and HNO₃ is considered. Distribution coefficients of the elements in the mixtures of 5·10⁻⁴ M–1 M HF and 0.01 M–5 M HNO₃ are determined. Strong retention of both elements was found on LN resin in the range of concentrations c(HF) ≤ 0.01 M for all concentrations of HNO₃. Retention tends to gradually disappear while increasing c(HF) to 0.5 M. On TRU resin retention is observed only in solutions with c(HNO₃) ≥ 2 M and c(HF) ≤ 0.01 M. The possibility of separating Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) on LN resin is illustrated in two different acid mixtures, whereas their separation on TRU resin under the conditions studied in this work is difficult. The results obtained can be used to isolate analytes from multicomponent mixtures during analytical tasks, as well as to separate them from each other.

     

Synthesis of lupeol derivatives and their antileishmanial and antitrypanosomal activities

The natural product lupeol 1 was isolated from aerial parts of Vernonia scorpioides with satisfactory yield, which made it viable to be used as starting material in semisynthetic approach. Ten lupeol derivatives 2–11 were prepared by classical procedures. Including, five new esters derivatives 7–11, which were obtained by structural modifications in the isopropylidene fragment. All semisynthetic compounds and lupeol 1–11 were confirmed by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR and HRMS. Their antiprotozoal activity was evaluated in vitro against L. amazonensis and T. cruzi. Derivative 6 showed the best antitrypanosomal activity (IC₅₀ = 12.48 μg/mL) and the lowest cytotoxic derivative (CC₅₀ = 161.50 μg/mL). The mechanism of action of the most active derivatives (4, 6 and 11) is not dependent from the enzyme trypanothione reductase.
