Lines of periodic hole structures produced by laser ablation using interfering femtosecond lasers split by a transmission grating

Long lines of periodic hole structures were produced on a gold film, a glass slide and polystyrene by laser ablation using interfering femtosecond lasers split by a transmission grating. An optical system comprising a cylindrical lens added to an imaging system with a transmission grating was used to obtain the interference of two beams along a long length, and high laser fluence was used to achieve laser ablation. The separation of each hole was 6.25 m, and the total length of the structure produced reached 6 mm, which is longest periodic structure produced by a shot of femtosecond laser. Dynamic nuclear polarization studies of nitroxyl spin probes in agarose gel using Overhauser‐enhanced magnetic resonance imaging

Agarose is a tissue‐equivalent material and its imaging characteristics similar to those of real tissues. Hence, the dynamic nuclear polarization studies of 3‐carboxy‐2,2,5,5‐tetramethyl‐pyrrolidine‐1‐oxyl (carboxy‐PROXYL) in agarose gel were carried out. The dynamic nuclear polarization parameters such as spin lattice relaxation time, longitudinal relaxivity, leakage factor, saturation parameter and coupling parameter were estimated for 2 mM carboxy‐PROXYL in phosphate‐buffered saline solution and water/agarose mixture (99 : 1). From these results, the spin probe concentration was optimized as 2 mM, and the reduction in enhancement was observed for carboxy‐PROXYL in water/agarose mixture (99 : 1) compared with phosphate‐buffered saline solution. Phantom imaging was also performed with 2 mM concentration of carboxy‐PROXYL in various concentrations of agarose gel at various radio frequency power levels. The results from the dynamic nuclear polarization measurements agree well with the phantom imaging results. These results pave the way for designing model system for human tissues suited to the biological applications of electron spin resonance/Overhauser‐enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.     

Control of flow rate in supercritical fluid chromatography

Summary Supercritical Fluid Chromatograph was constructed using two pumps and two restrictors. With this system in conjunction with the fused silica column packed with relatively large particles (40 μm), the flow rate was controlled both for isobaric and pressure programmed operations. Application of this system to the determination of molecular weight distribution of polystyrene oligomers was presented.     

Characteristic responses of a semiconductor gas sensor depending on the frequency of a periodic temperature change

A novel gas-sensing system based on a dynamic nonlinear response is reported to enhance the selectivity toward sample gases using a single detector. A periodic temperature change was applied to a semiconductor gas sensor and the resulting conductance of the sensor was evaluated by fast Fourier transformation (FFT). The dynamic nonlinear response to the sample gases was further characterized depending on the frequency of the temperature change. The characteristic sensor response under the application of a temperature change was theoretically simulated by considering the kinetics of gas molecules on the semiconductor surface.     

Chemoselective N-acetylation of primary aliphatic amines promoted by pivalic or acetic acid using ethyl acetate as an acetyl donor

The combination of pivalic or acetic acid as a promoter and EtOAc as a solvent and acetyl donor proved to be efficient for the chemoselective N-acetylation of primary aliphatic amines to afford the corresponding acetamides. We developed a simple and convenient approach, which requires mild reaction conditions. Competitive inter- and intramolecular reactions between aliphatic amines, alcohols, and aromatic amines were examined, and chemoselectivity was achieved by adjusting the conditions of the reaction.     

Vernodalidimers A and B, novel orthoester elemanolide dimers from seeds of Vernonia anthelmintica

Two novel elemanolide dimers, vernodalidimers A (1) and B (2), possessing a rare tricyclic ortho ester moiety, were isolated from the seeds of Vernonia anthelmintica. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR data and CD spectra. Vernodalidimers A (1) and B (2) exhibited potent cell growth inhibitory activity against HL-60 cells (IC₅₀ 0.72 and 0.47 μM, respectively).     

Rheological studies on the phase separation of hydroxypropylcellulose solution systems

Phase behavior of hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) in a mixed solvent of glycerol and water was investigated by two different rheological methods: rheooptical birefringence measurement in an elongational flow field and viscometric measurement in a shear flow field. The association process of the HPC chain during phase separation observed by the elongational flow birefringence method was also investigated by the shear viscometric method. The temperature dependence of chain rigidity was determined by measuring the intrinsic viscosity, and change in the conformation was investigated by observing elongational flow birefringence over the temperature range from the one‐phase to inside a phase boundary.
