Hyperboloidal layers for hyperbolic equations on unbounded domains

We show how to solve hyperbolic equations numerically on unbounded domains by compactification, thereby avoiding the introduction of an artificial outer boundary. The essential ingredient is a suitable transformation of the time coordinate in combination with spatial compactification. We construct a new layer method based on this idea, called the hyperboloidal layer. The method is demonstrated on numerical tests including the one dimensional Maxwell equations using finite differences and the three dimensional wave equation with and without nonlinear source terms using spectral techniques.

Measuring the performance of manufacturing firms with super slacks based model of data envelopment analysis: An application of 500 major industrial enterprises in Turkey

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a mathematical programming technique which has a wide application area. There are many applications of DEA to measure firms’ performance. Balance sheet data is frequently used in order to measure performance of firms through DEA. So it is the characteristic of balance sheets that assets and liabilities amount to the same value. When the data for inputs and outputs are selected from both assets and liabilities sections of the balance sheet, it is important that more attention be paid to the analysis since values assigned to inputs and outputs could be included in assets and liabilities at the same time. Such a situation could create problems concerning the conclusions drawn as a result of analysis.     

On co-ordinated quasi-convex functions

A function f: I → ?, where I ? ? is an interval, is said to be a convex function on I if $$f(tx + (1 - t)y) \le tf(x) + (1 - t)f(y)$$ holds for all x, y ∈ I and t ∈ [0, 1]. There are several papers in the literature which discuss properties of convexity and contain integral inequalities. Furthermore, new classes of convex functions have been introduced in order to generalize the results and to obtain new estimations. We define some new classes of convex functions that we name quasi-convex, Jensenconvex, Wright-convex, Jensen-quasi-convex and Wright-quasi-convex functions on the coordinates. We also prove some inequalities of Hadamard-type as Dragomir’s results in Theorem 5, but now for Jensen-quasi-convex and Wright-quasi-convex functions. Finally, we give some inclusions which clarify the relationship between these new classes of functions.     

White and some colored marbles as alternative radiation shielding materials for applications

ABSTRACT

In this paper, the radiation shielding parameters such as linear attenuation coefficients (LAC, µ), mass attenuation coefficients (MAC, µ/ρ), effective atomic numbers (Z_eff), effective electron densities (N_eff), half value of layers (HVL), mean free paths (MFP) and buildup factors (exposure (EBF) and energy absorption (EABF)) were investigated for cream (M1), pink (M2), white (M3), maroon (M4) and green (M5) marbles. Attenuation coefficients were measured in the energy region 31.18–661.66 keV photon energies. The values of Z_eff and N_eff were then calculated using these coefficients with logarithmic interpolation method, and HVLs and MFPs were calculated using the values of LAC of marble samples at the same photon energies. The experimental results were compared with the theoretical values obtained from WinXCom program, and good agreements were observed between the experimental and theoretical results. HVLs and MFPs of all marble samples were compared with those of some concretes, glasses and commercial radiation shielding glasses (SCHOTT Co.). The studied marbles were better radiation shielding materials than standard shielding concretes due to lower HVL and MFP values lower than the ordinary concrete. Finally, EBFs and EABFs of the marbles were calculated in the energy region 0.015–1?MeV up to penetration depths of 40 mfps by Geometric Progression method (G-P), and the results were discussed in terms of photon energies and chemical compositions of the marbles.     

A particular solution of Heun equation for Hulthen and Woods‐Saxon potentials

In this article a particular solution of Heun equation is derived by making use of the Nikiforov‐Uvarov (NU) method which provides exact solutions for general hypergeometric equation and eigenvalues together with eigenfunctions of the Heun equation for this particular solution are obtained. One to one correspondence (isomorphism) of the aforesaid equation with the radial Schrödinger equation is emphasized and also physical counterparts of the parameters in this equation are put forward by introducing solutions for two different potential functions (Hulthen and Woods‐Saxon potentials).
