Bestimmung des Wirkungsquerschnitts σ(Cs+→Cs) aus Sondenmessungen in einem thermischen Cs-Plasma

The ion currentI _i to a Langmuir probe was measured in a Cs-plasma which was produced by contact ionization and for which the neutral densityn _g is known and the plasma density is given by the Saha equation. Using the theory of Self and Shih the collision cross section σ(Cs⁺→Cs) was calculated from the measured ion currentI _i .

Fast emission ofα-particles in deep-inelastic36Ar+197Au collisions

Angular and energy correlations betweenα-particles and deep-inelastic projectile-like fragments were measured for the system³⁶Ar+¹⁹⁷Au atE _Lab=380 MeV. At most half of the coincident events can be attributed to statistical emission ofα-particles from the fully accelerated projectile-like fragments. The remainder of the events may be due to direct emission during the first 10^?22 s of the scattering process and to preequilibrium processes taking place within some 10^?21 s.

Crystalline thiophene. II: a comprehensive study of stable and metastable phases by means of heat capacity,thermally stimulated currents and raman spectroscopy measurements

This calorimetric study of crystalline thiophene between 77 and 250 K reveals the existence of four phase transitions at 174.50, 170.49, 136.8 and 111.26 K, respectively. The transition II-III (170.49 K) is easily avoided during cooling, leading to metastable phases, which, in turn, exhibit their own phase transitions.These findings explain previously confused observations. The existence of stable and metastable phases was confirmed by thermally stimulated current measurements. Intermolecular Raman spectra were observed between 10 and 300 K and assigned to the observed phases. Some predictions are made concerning the low-temperature behaviour of thiophene. Tentative rules are proposed to number metastable phases relative to stable ones.

Mode coupling and dynamical heterogeneity in colloidal gelation: a simulation study

We present simulation results addressing the dynamics of a colloidal system with attractive interactions close to gelation. Our interaction also has a soft, long-range repulsive barrier that suppresses liquid-gas type phase separation at long wavelengths. The new results presented here lend further weight to an intriguing picture emerging from our previous simulation work on the same system. Whereas mode coupling theory (MCT) offers quantitatively good results for the decay of correlators, closer inspection of the dynamics reveals a bimodal population of fast and slow particles with a very long exchange time scale. This population split represents a particular form of dynamic heterogeneity (DH). Although DH is usually associated with activated hopping and/or facilitated dynamics in glasses, the form of DH observed here may be more collective in character and associated with static (i.e., structural) heterogeneity.
