Sparsity and non-Euclidean embeddings

We present a relation between sparsity and non-Euclidean isomorphic embeddings. We introduce a general restricted isomorphism property and show how it enables one to construct embeddings of ? _p ⁿ , p > 0, into various types of Banach or quasi-Banach spaces. In particular, for 0 < r < p < 2 with r ≤ 1, we construct a family of operators that embed ? _p ⁿ into $\ell _r^{(1 + \eta )n}$ , with sharp polynomial bounds in η > 0.     

Kahane-Khinchin type averages

We prove a Kahane-Khinchin type result with a few random vectors, which are distributed independently with respect to an arbitrary log-concave probability measure on . This is an application of a small ball estimate and Chernoff's method, that has been recently used in the context of Asymptotic Geometric Analysis.

     

Generalized interval exchanges and the 2–3 conjecture

We introduce the notion of a generalized interval exchange induced by a measurable k-partition of [0,1). can be viewed as the corresponding restriction of a nondecreasing function on ℝ with . A is called λ-dense if λ(A _i ∩(a, b))>0 for each i and any 0≤ a< b≤1. We show that the 2–3 Furstenberg conjecture is invalid if and only if there are 2 and 3 λ-dense partitions A and B of [0,1), such that . We give necessary and sufficient conditions for this equality to hold. We show that for each integer m≥2, such that 3∤2m+1, there exist 2 and 3 non λ-dense partitions A and B of [0,1), corresponding to the interval exchanges on 2m intervals, for which and commute.     

Phase-locking transition in a chirped superconducting Josephson resonator

We observe a sharp threshold for dynamic phase locking in a high-Q transmission line resonator embedded with a Josephson tunnel junction, and driven with a purely ac, chirped microwave signal. When the drive amplitude is below a critical value, which depends on the chirp rate and is sensitive to the junction critical current I0, the resonator is only excited near its linear resonance frequency. For a larger amplitude, the resonator phase locks to the chirped drive and its amplitude grows until a deterministic maximum is reached. Near threshold, the oscillator evolves smoothly in one of two diverging trajectories, providing a way to discriminate small changes in I0 with a nonswitching detector, with potential applications in quantum state measurement.     

All spectral dominant norms are stable

A vector norm |·|on the space of n×n complex valued matrices is called stable if for some constant K&>0, not depending upon A or m, we have |A^m|?K|A|^m We show that such a norm is stable if and only if it dominates the spectralradius.     

Convex spectral functions

In this paper we characterize all convex functionals defined on certain convex sets of hermitian matrices and which depend only on the eigenvalues of matrices. We extend these results to certain classes of non-negative matrices. This is done by formulating some new characterizations for the spectral radius of non-negative matrices, which are of independent interest.
