Linear equations depending differentiably on a parameter

We investigate operator functionsT(x) inBanach spaces, depending differentiably (meaning of classC orC ) on a parameterx and enjoying a certain regularity property. Iff is a given differentiable function such that the equationT(x)e=f(x) is solvable for eachx then the existence of a functione is proved which belongs to the same differentiability class asf andT, solving the equationT(x)e(x)f(x) identically inx. As an application we extend a result ofJ. Leiterer [9] and give a comprehensive answer to a question posed byJ.L. Taylor in [15] concerning the exactness of certain cochain complexes.     

On the instability of resonances in parallel-plane waveguides under local perturbations of the boundary

We study the large-time asymptotics for solutions u( x , t) of the wave equation with Dirichlet boundary data, generated by a time-harmonic force distribution of frequency ω, in a class of domains with non-compact boundaries and show that the results obtained in [11] for a special class of local perturbations of Ω₀ ? ?² × (0,1) can be extended to arbitrary smooth local perturbations Ω of Ω₀. In particular, we prove that u is bounded as t → ∞ if Ω does not allow admissible standing waves of frequency ω in the sense of [8]. This implies in connection with [8]. Theorem 3.1 that the logarithmic resonances of the unperturbed domain Ω₀ at the frequencies ω = πk (k = 1, 2,…) observed in [14] can be simultaneously removed by small perturbations of the boundary. As a main step of our analysis, the determination of admissible solutions of the boundary value problem ΔU + κ²U = ? f in Ω, U = 0 on ?Ω is reduced to a compact operator equation.     

Approximating weak Chebyshev subspaces by Chebyshev subspaces

We examine to what extent finite-dimensional spaces defined on locally compact subsets of the line and possessing various weak Chebyshev properties (involving sign changes, zeros, alternation of best approximations, and peak points) can be uniformly approximated by a sequence of spaces having related properties.     

Minimal, rigid foliations by curves on ℂℙ n

We prove the existence of minimal and rigid singular holomorphic foliations by curves on the projective space ℂℙ ⁿ for every dimension n≥2 and every degree d≥2. Precisely, we construct a foliation ℱ which is induced by a homogeneous vector field of degree d, has a finite singular set and all the regular leaves are dense in the whole of ℂℙ ⁿ . Moreover, ℱ satisfies many additional properties expected from chaotic dynamics and is rigid in the following sense: if ℱ is conjugate to another holomorphic foliation by a homeomorphism sufficiently close to the identity, then these foliations are also conjugate by a projective transformation. Finally, all these properties are persistent for small perturbations of ℱ.?This is done by considering pseudo-groups generated on the unit ball 𝔹 ⁿ ⊆ℂ ⁿ by small perturbations of elements in Diff(ℂ ⁿ ,0). Under open conditions on the generators, we prove the existence of many pseudo-flows in their closure (for the C ⁰-topology) acting transitively on the ball. Dynamical features as minimality, ergodicity, positive entropy and rigidity may easily be derived from this approach. Finally, some of these pseudo-groups are realized in the transverse dynamics of polynomial vector fields in ℂℙ ⁿ . A strong law of large numbers for generalized random sets from the viewpoint of empirical processes

In this article we prove a strong law of large numbers for Borel measurable nonseparably valued random elements in the case of generalized random sets.
