Voltammetric studies in (K,Na)SCN eutectic melt

Current-potential curves are given for flow of solution containing cyanideion through a silver packed-bed electrode. It is shown that under the proper experimental conditions analyses of the free cyanide ion may be carried out. It is also shown that, within certain concentration limits, analyses of mixtures of CN^? and Cl^? may be carried out.     

Ipso nitration. Nitrodeformylation reactions in nitrothiophenealdehydes

Nitration of 4-nitro-2-thiophenealdehyde afforded 2,4-dinitrothiophene and small quantities of 4,5-dinitro-2-thiophenealdehyde; 5-nitro-2-thiophenealdehyde gave instead 3,5-dinitro-2-thiophenealdehyde as the main product and some 2,5-dinitrothiophene. The two dinitrothiophenes form through a nitrodeformylation reaction which represents an interesting example of the nitration at an ipso position in a strongly deactivated substrate.     

Biexcitons in artificial molecules with in-plane magnetic field

We theoretically investigate the effect of a magnetic field perpendicular to the tunneling direction on the ground-state properties of biexcitons in coupled quantum dots. The single-particle states are computed by numerically solving the 3D Scrödinger equation. The biexciton states are obtained by means of a configuration-interaction approach, which fully accounts for the intra- and inter-dot Coulomb correlations. We show that the biexciton ground state undergoes non-trivial transitions as a function of the applied magnetic field, which can be traced back to unexpected carrier localizations.     

Electron and ion beam analysis of composition and strain in Si-x Ge x /Si heterostructures

Si_1–x Ge _x heterostructures have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy, with nominal compositions of 10 and 15 at %. Analytical electron microscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and ion channeling have been used in order to determine film thickness, Ge molar fraction and tetragonal distortion. The actual Ge concentrations were found to be smaller than the nominal ones. For all the SiGe films a coherent growth was found, with a small deviation from the perfect tetragonal distortion. The good agreement found between the results obtained by each analytical technique demonstrate that these methods of characterization are powerful tools for the control of the epitaxial layer parameters.     

Voltammetry in fused acetamide

The voltammetric behavior of Pb(II), Cd(II), Tl(I) and Ni(II) in fused acetamide at 87°Chas been studied. The measurements have been carried out using normal polarography and cyclic voltammetry either with mercury or platinum electrodes. Only Tl(I) reduction occurs reversibly while all the other cations show some degree of irreversibility.     

Residual indices of holomorphic maps relative to singular curves of fixed points on surfaces

Let M be a two-dimensional complex manifold and let be a holomorphic map that fixes pointwise a (possibly) singular, compact, reduced and globally irreducible curve . We give a notion of degeneracy of f at a point of C. It turns out that f is non-degenerate at one point if and only if it is non-degenerate at every point of C. When f is non-degenerate on C, we define a residual index for f at each point of C. Then we prove that the sum of the indices is equal to the self-intersection number of C. Bile enterogastric reflux sensor using plastic optical fibers

A portable optical-fiber sensor for ambulatory assessment of the enterogastric reflux, based on the optical properties of the bile, was developed. It makes use of two light-emitting diodes and of an appropriate electronic circuit that processes the signals and provides the readout on a display. A suitable probe for in vivo measurements was designed. Plastic fiber bundles are used in order to obtain probe flexibility and low price. In vivo measurements performed on different patients show the superiority of this technique over existing methods.     

Alkylation of non-electron rich nitrogen heterocycles by alkyl orthoformates: Quantum chemistry calculations

Results of semiempirical MO calculations of N₁- and N₂-alkyl pyrazolotriazolopyrimidin-4-ones originating from alkylation by trimethyl and triethyl orthoformate are presented.
