The comparison of the probe and spectroscopic diagnostic methods on the H2-O2 flame plasma

In this paper a comparison of electron temperature values obtained by Langmuir probes and these obtained by spectroscopical measurements is dealt with. The total pressure of the plasma is 1 atm so that the inequalities a, d hold. A set of measurements using a glass-blower lamp as a plasma source, a Zeiss Q 24 spectrograph and floating probes was carried out in order to determine the values of the electron temperature. From the results of the qualitative spectral analysis it is evident that for temperature determination we are obliged to use the molecular spectrum of OH radicals. The method is usable only if thermodynamical equilibrium between the electron gas and OH radicals occurs. Under this condition the agreement between both types of values is very good.The author wishes to express his thanks to professor A. von Engel for helpful discussion about problems discussed in the present paper.     

Application of EELS to the microanalysis of materials

Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is used in analytical electron microscopy (AEM) because it can provide results on the chemical composition and structure of a small volume of material. The practical application of EELS was demonstrated by the investigation of a refractory hard metal of the type WC-TiC-Co and by the investigation of a BaTiO₃ ceramic material. To demonstrate the present status of quantitative analysis by EELS, the spectra of Be₂SiO₄, TiB₂ and BaTiO₃ were quantified and the results indicate that quantitative analysis is feasible for major concentrations of light elements and also of heavier elements even in the presence of severe edge overlap.

A novel synthesis of linear polyenes via conjugate addition of cuprates to α,β-γ,δ-diunsaturated sulfones followed by SO2 extrusion

The two 1,3-butadienyl 2-propenyl sulfones $\text{5}$ and $\text{6}$, 1,3,5-heptatriene synthons, have been transformed into the tri- and tetraenes $\text{1}$ - $\text{4}$ by alkylcuprate addition and Ramberg-Bäcklund SO₂ extrusion. The reaction stereochemistry is discussed.
