Stereoconvergent Generation of a Contrasteric syn‐Bicyclopropylidene (=syn‐Cyclopropylidenecyclopropane) by Stille‐Like Coupling

Stereoisomerically pure endo‐ and exo‐7‐halo‐7‐(trimethylstannyl)benzonorcar‐3‐enes (=endo‐ and exo‐(1‐halo‐1a,2,7,7a‐tetrahydro‐1H‐cyclopropa[b]naphthalen‐1‐yl)trimethylstannane) 4 and 6 were selectively obtained by lithium? tin or magnesium? tin transmetalation in good yields (Scheme 2 and 3). The reaction of these compounds with copper(I) thiophene‐2‐carboxylate (CuTC) produced in both cases the corresponding C_S‐symmetric bicyclopropylidene (=cyclopropylidenecyclopropane) syn‐ 1 , a single diastereoisomer (Schemes 5 and 6). The structure of syn‐ 1 was undoubtedly elucidated by X‐ray single crystal diffraction. The coupling mechanism of the carbenoid cyclopropane is discussed (Scheme 7).     

Synthesis of thio- and furan-fused heterocycles: furopyranone,furopyrrolone, and thienopyrrolone derivatives

We report herein the synthesis of a novel class of compounds, ethyl 4-oxo-4H-furo[3,2-c]pyran-6-yl carbonate, (7E)-7-[(dimethylamino)methylene]-4H-furo[3,2-c]pyran-4,6(7H)-dione, 5-oxo-N-phenyl-2,5-dihydro-4H-furo[3,2-b]pyrrole-4-carboxamide, and 5-oxo-N-phenyl-5,6-dihydro-4H-thieno[3,2-b]pyrrole-4-carboxamide starting from the corresponding acid derivatives. Intramolecular cyclization in the presence of thionyl chloride formed the target fused ring systems. Additional transformation was seen in the cyclization of furan-fused heterocycle. A mechanism was proposed based on experimental and computational findings.     

New fatty acid derivatives based on barbiturates and other cyclic β-dicarbonyl compounds and an acyl migration

The use of DCC, triethylamine and 4-dimethylaminopyridine in dichloromethane provides a general and standard one-pot procedure for the O-acylation of cyclic β-dicarbonyl compound derivatives (1) with palmitic and stearic acids which have long hydrocarbon tails, to synthesis of new type of fatty acid derivative in good to excellent yields. Structure elucidation was carried out by FT-IR, ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy techniques. The acyl migration was also found in results and the corresponding structure was characterized by X-ray crystallography. A proposed mechanism was discussed for the formation of products.     

Unique charge-separated intermolecular and eight-membered intramolecular H-bonds in bis-(thio)barbiturates

Reaction of symmetrical and unsymmetrical (thio)barbituric acids with aldehydes in the presence of triethylamine afforded a new form of bis-(thio)barbiturate containing charge-separated inter- and eight-membered intramolecular H-bonds. The reaction products were obtained as bis-(thio)barbiturates containing eight-membered intramolecular H-bond in the presence of l-(+)-tartaric acid (TA). The intramolecular H-bond strength (kcal/mol) and corresponding pKa value for 4ab′ were estimated to be 37 kcal/mol and ?1.3, respectively.

Stereoselective synthesis of optically active cyclopenta[c]pyrans and cyclopenta[c]furans by the intramolecular Pauson–Khand reaction

An intramolecular Pauson–Khand reaction of enynes derived from homoallyl, homopropargyl, and allyl alcohols is described. 2-Heteroaryl-substituted homoallyl, homopropargyl, and allyl alcohols are easily and efficiently resolved through enzymatic resolution in high ee (91–99%) and with a known stereochemistry. Each enantiomerically enriched enyne derived from homoallyl and homopropargyl alcohols affords the conformationally most stable diastereomeric cyclopenta[c]pyran ring system as the sole product, whereas enantiomerically enriched enynes derived from allyl alcohols give a diastereomeric cis:trans mixture of the cyclopenta[c]furan ring system.     

MRI findings of primary small-cell carcinoma of kidney

We report the MRI findings of primary small-cell carcinoma of the kidney (PSCCK) in a 59-year-old female. This tumor appeared as a 16-cm mass that arose from the right kidney. This lesion had diminished signal on T1-weighted images and heterogeneous mixed signal on T2-weighted images. The tumor primarily involved the renal medulla with persistent thin renal cortex. Despite the tumors' large size, no substantial central necrosis was present. The predominant medullary location and the lack of central necrosis in this large tumor were features unusual for renal cell carcinoma and should raise the suspicion of another malignancy, the differential diagnosis of which should contain extrapulmonary small-cell carcinoma of the kidney.     

Ultralow-noise mode-locked laser with coupled optoelectronic oscillator configuration

We describe simultaneous generation of ultralow-noise optical pulses and microwave signal with a mode-locked fiber laser in a coupled optoelectronic oscillator configuration. We demonstrate 9.2-GHz optical and microwave signals with the measured phase noise of -140 dBc/Hz at 10-kHz offset frequency. We show that the mode-locked laser in the photonic oscillator serves as a high-Q filter and is responsible for the observed low phase noise.
