Mass separator for radioactive isotopes

A new isotope separator has been designed, constructed, and put into routine operation for separation of ¹³³Xe providing a major advancement and significant cost reduction in preparation of this radioactive isotope. The design features and advantages are discussed that expedite high purity separation of relatively small quantities of this isotope. These advantages could be easily used to expedite separation of other shorter-lived radioactive isotopes.     

DERIVATIVES OF 4-CHLORO-3,5-DINITROBENZOTRIFLUORIDE V. SYNTHESIS OF 4,6-DINITRO-2,8-BIS(TRIFLUOROMETHYL) PHENOTHIAZINE (1), ISOPROPYL 2,6-DINITRO-4-TRIFLUOROMETHYLPHENYL SULFIDE (2) AND BIS(2,6-DINITRO-4-TRIFLUOROMETHYLPHENYL) DISULFIDE (3)

Abstract

The reaction of potassium isopropyl dithiocarbonate with 4-chloro-3,5-dinitrobenzotrifluoride in dimethylformamide at 25–30°C afforded the titled phenothiazine (1) and sulfide (2). The reaction of bis(2,6-dinitro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-sulfide or the above halogen compound with sodium hydrosulfide in the same solvent at 80–90°C furnished 1. At 25–30°C the latter reaction afforded the titled disulfide (3). Possible mechanisms and supporting nmr, ir and mass spectral data are discussed.

3J(PCNH) in phosphorus substituted thioformamides as a configurational probe

Coupling between P and (N)? H has been observed in the ¹H{¹⁴N}NMR spectra of a series of phosphorus substituted thioformamides, R¹₂/P(X)C(S)NHR². For R² = H one of the two couplings constants ³J(PCNH) is much larger than the other. The larger constant is assumed to be ³J(PCNH) (trans) and the magnitude of ³J(PCNH) for several compounds with R² = Me or Ph is used to assign the configuration about the C(S)? N bond.
