Radical-based grafting of GMA on sutures of different nature

Irradiation of a number of different sutures largely employed in the clinical practice with either high energy electrons or with γ-rays followed by quenching with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) conveniently led to derivatization through a radical-based process. The radicals involved were detected by means of ESR spectroscopy and were characterized on the basis of their ESR spectral parameters which were also found to be consistent with the hfs constants predicted by DFT calculations. Evidence of the GMA derivatization of the sutures was obtained via(13)C CP-MAS NMR spectroscopy, while its extent was evaluated gravimetrically.     

Effects of finite size nuclei in relativistic four-component calculations of hyperfine structure

The effect of a finite size model for both the nuclear charge and magnetic moment distributions on calculated EPR hyperfine structure have been studied using a relativistic four-component method based on density functional theory. This approach employs a restricted kinetically balanced basis (mDKS-RKB) and includes spin-polarization using noncollinear spin-density exchange-correlation functionals in the unrestricted fashion. Benchmark calculations have been carried out for a number of small molecules containing Zn, Cd, Ag, and Hg. The present results are compared with those obtained at the Douglas-Kroll-Hess second order (DKH-2) method. The dependence of the results on the quality of the orbital and auxiliary basis sets has been studied. It was found that some basis sets contain irregularities that deteriorate the results. Especial care has to be taken also on the construction of the auxiliary basis for fitting the total electron and spin-densities.     

Abnormal reactions of 2‐methoxy‐4,9‐dimethyl‐1‐nitroacridine with selenous acid and selenium(IV) oxide. Synthesis of 1H‐selenopheno[2,3,4‐k,l]acridine‐1‐one: A new seleno‐containing ring system

Unusual course of the reaction was revealed on the oxidation of functionally substituted acridine containing the activated methyl groups by well‐known oxidants, such as selenous acid and selenium(IV) oxide. Treatment of 2‐methoxy‐4,9‐dimethyl‐1‐nitroacridine ( 5 ) with an excess of H₂SeO₃ in boiling ethanol gave a mixture of the normal reaction products, 2‐methoxy‐4‐methyl‐1‐nitro‐9‐formylacridine ( 11 ) (isolated yield 29%) and 2‐methoxy‐4‐methyl‐1‐nitroacridine‐9‐carboxylic acid ( 12 ) (36%), together with an abnormal product, 3‐methoxy‐5‐methyl‐1H‐selenopheno[2,3,4‐k,l]acridine‐1‐one ( 13 ) (21%), which is the first example of a new seleno‐containing ring system. With the use of SeO₂ the yield of selenolactone 13 was much lower. J. Heterocyclic Chem., 2011.

Polyfunctional activity of metal complexes containing 2,6-Di-tert-butylphenol in catalytic oxidation

The results of the investigations of metal complexes containing 2,6-di-tert-butilphenol in the ligand environment in catalytic homogeneous oxidation of organic compounds are reviewed. The liquid-phase oxidation of hydrocarbons, olefins, aminophenol and unsaturated fatty acids by molecular oxygen in the presence of phthalocyanines, porphyrins, σ-aryl and π-allyl transition metal complexes is described. The change of the reactivity of organometallic and coordination compounds by oxidation of the redox active phenolic group opens up the possibility to use them as polyfunctional catalytic systems showing positive and/or negative catalytic effects.     

Heteropoly acid as a novel efficient catalyst for Fries rearrangement

Heteropoly acid H3PW12O40 is a very efficient and environmentally benign catalyst for the Fries rearrangement of phenyl acetate in homogeneous or heterogeneous liquid-phase systems at 100-150 degrees C.     

Electronic structure of uracil-like nucleobases adsorbed on Si(001): uracil,thymine and 5-fluorouracil

We study the electronic properties of the Si(001):Uracil, Si(001):Thymine, andSi(001):5-Fluorouracil systems, focusing on the Si dimer-bridging configuration withadsorption governed by carbonyl groups. While the overall structural and electronicproperties are similar, with small differences due to chemical substitutions, much largereffects on the surface band dispersion and bandgap show up as a function of the molecularorientation with respect to the surface. An off-normal orientation of the molecular planesis favored, showing larger bandgap and lower total energy than the upright position. Wealso analyze the localization of gap-edge occupied and unoccupied surface states.     

(4+2) Dimerization of imides of arylmaleic acids in the presence of the 3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole and 2,6-lutidine

Imides of arylmaleic acids in the presence of 3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole underwent (4+2) dimerization under heating in chlorobenzene within 24 h to afford 1,2,3,3a,3b,4,5,6,6a,10b-decahydrobenzo[e]pyrrolo[3,4-g]isoindole-1,3,4,6-tetraones in good yields. It was established that during the heating of imides of arylmaleic acid in 2,6-lutidine at 100 °C the (4+2) dimerization products containing a lutidine fragment are obtained.
