Zero‐valent Iron Nanoparticles Modified Screen‐printed Electrode for FIA or HPLC Amperometric Detection of Metronidazole in Pharmaceutical Formulations

A zero‐valent iron nanoparticles modified electrode was employed as an amperometric detector in flow conditions to determine metronidazole and 2‐methyl‐5‐nitroimidazole in pharmaceutical formulations. Flow injection analysis at ?0.6 V (vs. Ag) achieved limits of detection of 2 and 6 μM for metronidazole and 2‐methyl‐5‐nitroimidazole, respectively, but the analysis was not discriminative between the two compounds. When reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography was applied previous to the electrochemical detection both analytes could be analysed simultaneously. However, the limits of detection slightly increased (10 μM) as a consequence of the use of an organic solvent and a lower sample volume. The relative standard deviation of analytical repeatability was <4.0 % in both techniques. The methods were validated by comparing the results obtained from the analysis of commercial samples with those provided by HPLC‐DAD and no significant differences were detected. Results probed that the modified electrode was a successful tool in the FIA and HPLC analysis of nitro compounds.     

Thermomagnetometric analysis of lithium ferrites

In this work, the magneto-phase transitions in pure lithium (Li_0.5Fe_2.5O₄), lithium–zinc (Li_0.4Fe_2.4Zn_0.2O₄) and lithium–titanium (Li_0.6Fe_2.2Ti_0.2O₄) ferrites were studied by the thermogravimetric analysis in magnetic field, which is known as the thermomagnetometry method. The ferrites were prepared by the solid-state synthesis from oxides and carbonates. The Curie point of magnetic phase in ferrites and their composite mixtures was determined from the derivative thermogravimetric curve in the region of ferrite mass change associated with the ferrimagnet–paramagnet transition in the magnetic phase. The method based on the analysis of ferrite mass change at Curie temperature was developed to estimate the ferrite phase concentrations in composite magnetic materials.

Avoided-crossing-based liquid-crystal photonic-bandgap notch filter

We demonstrate a highly tunable deep notch filter realized in a liquid-crystal photonic-bandgap (LCPBG) fiber. The filter is realized without inducing a long-period grating in the fiber but simply by filling a solid-core photonic-crystal fiber with a liquid crystal and exploiting avoided crossings within the bandgap of the LCPBG fiber. The filter is demonstrated experimentally and investigated using numerical simulations. A high degree of tuning of the spectral position of the deep notch is also demonstrated.

Free-radical reactions of diazonium salts with α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. A new synthesis of 1,4-diarylpyrazole derivatives

Free-radical decomposition of diazonium salts catalyzed by titanous or titanous and ferrous salts in the presence of β-substituted α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds leads to 1,4-diarylpyrazole derivatives. The reaction occurs via an intermediate azo compound ( 1 ), which can be reduced by the metal salt or can be isolated and hydrogenated to pyrazole derivatives.     

Double cyclisation of phenylglycine-o-carboxylic acids—I: New stable mesoionic oxazolones

Remarkably stable mesoionic oxazolones possessing an oxazolo[3,2-a]quinolinium structure (5a–b),8,16, 17) were obtained by the double cyclisation of phenylglycine-o-carboxylic acids (3a–c) in refluxing acetic anhydride or in benzoic anhydride at 140°, The 0-Ac group was eliminated to give the corresponding lactones (6a–b) or replaced by O-Ts (7). IR stretching vibrations of the endo-carbonyl were in the range 1710–1768 cm^?1, while v_1-CH exhibited unusually high values (3159–3194 cm^-1). 1-Acyl derivatives could be obtained only with TFAA (23–24), although easy deuteration of the same position took place in the presence of traces of trifluoroacetic acid. Hydrolysis of 5b led to the α-quinolone-N-acetic acid 27a. In the case of 5a, hydrolysis was accompanied by self-acylation of the nucleophilic site at C-4 with formation of a dimeric acid 28a. The presence of an additional Me group in phenylalanine-o-carboxylic acid (36) activates the corresponding mesoionic oxazolone 37 so that 1-acylation becomes possible with formation of the fused oxazole 38 by the Dakin-West reaction. Temperature dependent magnetic non-equivalence of methylene protons has been observed in acids 3b-d and f and also in the 7-membered anhydride 48b.
