Originally proposed as a method for measuring the power gain of the cochlear amplifier, Allen-Fahey experiments compare intracochlear distortion products and ear-canal otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) under tightly controlled conditions. In this paper Allen-Fahey experiments are shown to place significant constraints on the dominant mode of reverse energy propagation within the cochlea. Existing Allen-Fahey experiments are reviewed and shown to contradict the predictions of compression-wave OAE models recently proposed in the literature. In compression-wave models, distortion products propagate from their site of generation to the stapes via longitudinal compression waves in the cochlear fluids (fast waves); in transverse traveling-wave models, by contrast, distortion products propagate primarily via pressure-difference waves whose velocity and other characteristics depend on the mechanical properties of the cochlear partition (slow waves). Compression-wave models predict that the distortion-product OAEs (DPOAEs) measured in the Allen-Fahey paradigm increase at close primary-frequency ratios (or remain constant in the hypothetical absence of tuned suppression). The behavior observed experimentally is just the opposite-a pronounced decrease in DPOAE amplitude at close ratios. Since neither compression-wave nor simple conceptual "hybrid-wave" models can account for the experimental results--whereas slow-wave models can, via systematic changes in distortion-source directionality arising from wave-interference effects--Allen-Fahey and related experiments provide compelling evidence against the predominance of compression-wave OAEs in mammalian cochlear mechanics. 相似文献

Interface energetics are of fundamental importance in organic and molecular electronics. By combining complementary experimental techniques and first-principles calculations, we resolve the complex interplay among several interfacial phenomena that collectively determine the electronic structure of the strong electron acceptor tetrafluoro-tetracyanoquinodimethane chemisorbed on copper. The secretion apparatus known as the needle complex (NC) from the bacterium Shigella flexneri was studied by single particle electron microscopy. The isolated intact NC appears in projection to be composed of a basal body consisting of seven rings and a protruding needle appendage. A comparison of averaged projections of the intact NC and its fragments revealed the organization of the NC into several major subcomplexes. One of these lacks an inner membrane ring of the basal body but still presents the needle appendage attached to four upper rings. The position of the needle appendage within these rings is variable, suggesting that the dissociated component is necessary for stabilizing the needle appendage. Averaged images of the subcomplex lacking the inner membrane basal rings show a thicker extension at the base of the needle appendage, called the socket. This socket was also found to be present in images of the basal body fragment isolated from mutants lacking the mxiH and mxiI genes. This suggests that the socket is not composed of MxiH and MxiI subunits, which form the needle appendage. A symmetry analysis of the basal body top view projections indicated that a peripheral protein component of the inner membrane ring is present in a ring with 24 copies, in contrast to the Salmonella typhimurium NC. A model is presented in which the NC is only associated to the outer- and inner-membranes with its first and seventh ring, respectively. 相似文献

The electro-acoustic effects, namely the ion vibration potential (IVP) and the colloidal vibration current (CVI), colloidal vibration potential (CVP) first described by P. Debye [P. Debye, J. Chem. Phys. 1 (1933) 13], are a result of charge separation of bound or free ions at different degrees by ultrasonic waves. Today commercial instruments are available to investigate liquid homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. In the present paper the application of this technique for the characterization of salts, protein solutions and resins for biochromatography is shown and valuable information about resins can be derived in a short time. Various resins were investigated with the following results: (1) the CVI magnitude is dependent of several parameters (such as particle size distribution, volume fraction, density difference); (2) the CVI is influenced by the surface modification of the resins. Polymeric modifications decrease the value of CVI. The CVI is generally lower for high capacity resins; (3) the measurement of the electro-acoustic effects can be used to detect small changes in resins. A competitive photoresponsive supramolecular system is formed in a dilute aqueous solution of three components: vesicles of amphiphilic α-cyclodextrin host 1a, divalent p-methylphenyl guest 2 or divalent p-methylbenzamide guest 3, and photoresponsive azobenzene monovalent guest 5. Guests 2 and 3 form weak inclusion complexes with 1a (K(a)≈10(2) M(-1)), whereas azobenzene guest 5 forms a strong inclusion complex (K(a)≈10(4) M(-1)), provided it is in the trans state. The aggregation and adhesion of vesicles of host 1a is mediated by guest 2 (or 3) due to the formation of multiple intervesicular noncovalent links, as confirmed by using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), optical density measurements at 600 nm (OD600), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). The addition of excess monovalent guest trans-5 to vesicles of 1a aggregated by divalent guest 2 (or 3) causes the dispersion of vesicles of 1a because trans-5 displaces 2 (as well as 3) from the vesicle surface. Upon UV irradiation of a dilute ternary mixture of vesicles of 1a, guest 2 (or 3), and competitor trans-5, compound trans-5 isomerizes to cis-5, and renewed aggregation of vesicles of 1a by guest 2 (or 3) occurs because 2 (as well as 3) displaces cis-5 from the vesicle surface. Subsequent visible irradiation causes the redispersion of vesicles of 1a because cis-5 reisomerizes into trans-5, which again displaces guest 2 (or 3) from the vesicle surface. Peripheral MR angiography requires high resolution and arterial contrast. Neither can be obtained simultaneously due to the short arterial phase of the contrast agent. To improve temporal resolution, keyhole imaging was developed, which combines high resolution and arterial k-spaces at the time of image acquisition. Here, a related approach is introduced for image post-processing in the Fourier domain. It is demonstrated that simple substitution of the central k-space with low-resolution data leads to severe distortion. Hence, a dedicated calculation scheme is necessary for composite k-space post-processing. A solution is presented for high-resolution arterial peripheral MR angiography that uses subtraction of venous intensities from the central high-resolution k-space. The calculations in the Fourier domain do not require interpolations between the different resolutions. High-resolution steady-state MR angiography, which exhibits contrast-enhanced arteries and veins at an isotropic resolution of 0.65 mm, and standard resolution arterial first-pass MR angiography were combined to obtain images with the resolution of the steady-state images and arterial contrast. Based on essential-state models for three-photon absorption (3PA), we have investigated the structure-property relationships for stilbene-based dipolar and quadrupolar chromophores. The emphasis lies on the evolution of the 3PA cross section with the degree of ground-state polarization. For dipolar systems, we find a dominant role played by Deltamu, which expresses the change in dipole moment between the ground state and the 3PA active excited state. Thus, the strategies usually applied to maximize the second-order polarizability beta are also applicable to optimize the 3PA cross section. For quadrupolar systems, the 3PA response is dominated by contributions from channels including various low-lying two-photon allowed states, which limits the applicability of essential-state models. Optimization strategies can be proposed but vary for different ranges of ground-state polarization. 相似文献
