Self-assembled monolayers for liquid crystal alignment: simple preparation on glass using alkyltrialkoxysilanes

A simple procedure for the preparation of octadecylsiloxane self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on float glass substrates is described. The method utilizes commercial octadecyltriethoxysilane, OTE: n-C₁₈H₃₇Si(OCH₂CH₃)₃, as the SAM precursor, with deposition accomplished in toluene solution using n-butylamine as catalyst. This synthetic approach obviates the use of the problematic trichlorosilanes typically required for the preparation of high quality SAMs, and is characterized by a wide 'process window,' utilizing off-the-shelf reagents without special handling.     

Diamagnetic muonium states in InP

Transverse and zero‐field muon spin relaxation reveal several diamagnetic muonium states in InP characterized by their static linewidths and diffusion properties. We tentatively associate low‐temperature diamagnetic states with Mu⁺ in the BC and T_P interstitial sites and a missing fraction with Mu⁰ rapidly diffusing through T_In interstices. Trapping peaks above 250 K imply static centers which depend on doping type, consistent with Mu^- at T_In for n‐type samples and Mu coupled with a dopant or other defect for p‐type. An Alternative Approach to Nonlinear Instabilities in Hydrodynamics

The conventional theoretical methods used in the study of nonlinear hydrodynamic instabilities are known to suffer from severe amplitude limitations. In this paper a modified asymptotic theory is developed which is more general and less restrictive. Such an approach may be relevant to many nonlinear instability phenomena.     

Spin magnetic moment of a free relativistic electron

By decomposing the charge-current density, it is demonstrated that the “built-in” spin magnetic moment of a free relativistic electron ise?/2mc, wherem is the Lorentz mass.     

Data reduction methodology for perturbed angular correlation experiments

Data reduction schemes currently used for time differential perturbed angular correlation measurements are evaluated in terms of (i) their relative effectiveness in eliminating irrelevant variables, including single counter efficiencies and spectrum time shifts; and (ii) their effectiveness in putting data in a form that can easily be fitted by theoretical correlation functions. It is pointed out that erroneous conclusions may be derived from improperly reduced data, but that properly analyzed experiments performed at four angles allow a good determination of both the time-dependent and time-independent parts of the correlation function. Correction of data for accidentals, source self-absorption and spectrum livetime differences are discussed.     

On a problem of heat conduction with time-dependent boundary conditions

Zusammenfassung Das folgende Wärmeleitungsproblem wird analytisch behandelt. Auf dem Mantel und den Deckflächen eines Kreiszylinders sei einezeitlich veränderliche Temperaturverteilung und ausserdem die Temperatur einer Kurve zur Zeitt=0 gegeben. Gesucht ist die Innentemperatur für alle Zeiten. Die verwendete Separationsmethode kann auch auf andere Randwertprobleme angewendet werden.
