The first stage of the instability of a vortex ring is linear and characterized by the growth of an azimuthal stationary wave which develops around the ring. Theoretical works predict its origin, shape, number of waves and growth rate. Apart for the growth rate, experimental and numerical results in viscous fluids fit well with the predictions based on an ideal fluid hypothesis. On the other hand, the next stages of the development of the instability (which are non-linear) are not well known. Only few phenomena are described, in an isolated way, in various partial contributions. The aim of this paper is to report on a complete experimental investigation of the non-linear phase of the instability of the vortex ring. The vortices were produced in water and their Reynolds number Re p was varied from 2,650 to 6,100. Visualizations were performed using planar laser induced fluorescence and measurements with 2D2C and 2D3C particle image velocimetry. Based on a Fourier analysis of the results, it appears that the non-linear phase begins with the development of harmonics of the linear modes (first unstable modes). But the growth of those harmonics is rapidly stopped by the development of low order modes. Then appears an m=0 mode, which corresponds to a mean azimuthal velocity around the vortex. Simultaneously, secondary vortical structures develop all around the vortex in its peripheral zone. These vortical structures are linked with the ejection of vorticity in the wake of the ring and they appear just before the transition towards turbulence. A tentative is made here to place all these phenomena chronologically, in order to propose a scenario for the transition from the linear phase to turbulence.  相似文献

The results of experiments performed to study the linear phase of the instability of vortex rings are presented. The experiments were performed in water. The vortex rings are generated by pushing water through the cylindrical nozzle of a pipe submerged in an aquarium. The experiments were made with the help of planar laser induced fluorescence as well as 2D2C and 2D3C particle image velocimetry. They show the straining field causing the instability, and for the first time experimentally the growth of a band of linear unstable modes. They also confirm previous studies concerning the shape of the instability and theories predicting the number of waves and the bandwidth of unstable modes. However, the measurement of the growth rate shows the influence of viscous damping, and consequently, the limit of the theories based on the hypothesis of an ideal fluid.  相似文献

Hydrolysis of TiCl4 in a diether‐functionalized imidazolium ionic liquid (IL), namely 1‐methyl‐3‐[2‐(2‐methoxy(ethoxy)ethyl]imidazolium methane sulfonate (M(MEE)I ? CH3SO3), results in a heterostructured organic/inorganic and sponge‐like porous TiO2 material. The thermal treatment (300 °C) followed by calcination (500 °C) affords highly porous TiO2. The characterization of the obtained samples (with and without IL, before and after calcination) by XRD, SEM, and TEM reveals TiO2 anatase crystalline phases and irregular‐shaped particles with different porous structures. These hierarchical‐structured mesoporous TiO2 nanomaterials were employed as efficient photocatalysts in the water‐splitting process, yielding up to 1304 μmol g?1 on hydrogen production.  相似文献

There is a need to know the nanostructure of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) films obtained from waterborne polymer colloids so that it can be correlated with properties. Intermittent-contact atomic force microscopy (AFM) of an acrylic waterborne PSA film identifies two components, which can be attributed to the polymer and the solids in the serum (mainly surfactant). It is found that when the average AFM tapping force, F(av), is relatively low, the polymer particles appear to be concave. But when F(av) is higher, the particles appear to have a convex shape. This observation is explained by a height artefact caused by differences in the indentation depths into the two components that vary with the tapping amplitude and F(av). To achieve the maximum contrast between the polymer and serum components, F(av) should be set such that the indentation depths are as different as possible. Unlike what is found for the height images, the phase contrast images of the PSA do not show a reversal in contrast over the range of tapping conditions applied. The phase images are thus reliable in distinguishing the two components of the PSA according to their viscoelastic properties. At the surface of films dried at room temperature, the serum component is found in localized regions within permanent depression into the film.  相似文献

The original micropatterning technique on gold, although very efficient, is not accessible to most biology labs and is not compatible with their techniques for image acquisition. Other solutions have been developed on silanized glass coverslips. These methods are still hardly accessible to biology labs and do not provide sufficient reproducibility to become incorporated in routine biological protocols. Here, we analyzed cell behavior on micro-patterns produced by various alternative techniques. Distinct cell types displayed different behavior on micropatterns, while some were easily constrained by the patterns others escaped or ripped off the patterned adhesion molecules. We report methods to overcome some of these limitations on glass coverslips and on plastic dishes which are compatible with our experimental biological applications. Finally, we present a new method based on UV crosslinking of adhesion proteins with benzophenone to easily and rapidly produce highly reproducible micropatterns without the use of a microfabricated elastomeric stamp.  相似文献

Rh(0) nanoparticles (ca. 4 nm) dispersed in an ionic liquid (1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate) were immobilized within a silica network, prepared by the sol-gel method. The effect of the sol-gel catalyst (acid or base) on the encapsulated ionic liquid and Rh(0) content, on the silica morphology and texture, and on the catalyst alkene hydrogenation activity was investigated. The Rh(0) content in the resulting xerogels (ca. 0.1 wt% Rh/SiO(2)) was shown to be independent of the sol-gel process. However, acidic conditions afforded higher contents of encapsulated ionic liquid and xerogels with larger pore diameters, which in turn might be responsible for the higher catalyst activity in hydrogenation of the alkenes.  相似文献

The effects of four types of plastic surfaces and four pre-incubation media, containing high/low glucose and +/- amino acids, on adhesion of Saccharomyces cerevisiae BY4742 wild type and Deltaflo11 mutant (strain background S288c) were investigated. No difference in adhesive ability between the two yeast strains was observed in any of our experiments, thus confirming that FLO11 is not operational in the S. cerevisiae S288c strain background. The adhesive abilities of both yeast strains depended on the plastic type and pre-incubation conditions. The poorest adhesion was observed on hydrophilic polystyrene, whereas hydrophobic polystyrene resulted in moderate adhesion. The best adhesion of both yeast strains was observed on polystyrene surfaces with combined hydrophilic/hydrophobic domains. When amino acids were present in the pre-incubation media, lack of glucose increased the cell surface hydrophobicity and enhanced the adhesion to all four types of polystyrene. Lack of amino acids in the pre-incubation media increased the cell surface hydrophobicity and enhanced the adhesion especially to polystyrene surfaces with combined hydrophilic/hydrophobic domains. Our results suggest that glucose and amino acid starvation induces other genes than FLO11 in S. cerevisiae S288c coding for hydrophobic cell surface constituents with adhesive properties to especially moderately hydrophobic plastic surfaces.  相似文献

The ternary system BaF2/CuF2/AlF3 is investigated by X‐ray diffraction techniques and an isothermal section at 620 °C is established. It exhibits ten quaternary phases and among them Ba45Cu28Al17F197. This fluoride has a triclinic cell: a = 14.024(1) Å, b = 23.778(1) Å, c = 25.480(1) Å, α = 90.44(1)°, β = 90.26(1)°, γ = 107.03(1)°, Z = 2. Its crystal structure was solved in the space group P1 (no1), from X‐ray single crystal data using 41976 unique reflections. It is built up from a complex arrangement of aluminium and copper fluorine polyhedra, which are regular [AlF6] and strongly distorted [CuF6] octahedra, [CuF6] trigonal prisms and [Cu2F10] bipolyhedral units constituted either by two octahedra, or one octahedron and one trigonal prism, connected by an edge. These polyhedra are organized in planes of about two octahedra thickness, which form a succession of sheets running perpendicularly to the [100] direction of the cell. Each sheet is constituted by infinite chains of distorted polyhedra connected by edges and vertices and linked together by the vertices of blocks of four and six polyhedra, involving aluminium fluorine octahedra and copper fluorine bipolyhedral units or octahedra. The barium ions, 10 to 14‐coordinated to fluorine atoms, ensure the electroneutrality of the structure. They are inserted inside the planes.  相似文献

We report on recent measurements on GaAs/AlGaAs THz quantum well infrared photodetectors (QWIPs), investigating linewidth broadening as function of doping level. Structures with 3% and 2% Al content in the barrier were grown using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), respectively. Linewidth widening with increasing doping of the GaAs quantum well could be observed in the detection spectra. The observed shift of peak detection wavelength for different well dopings fits with values obtained from wavefunction calculations, taking into account many-particle effects, namely exchange and correlation energies and the effect of depolarization on the absorption. In addition, activation energies extracted from dark current measurements as function of device temperature are also in agreement with the calculations.  相似文献
