Low threshold voltage asymmetric antiferroelectric liquid crystal cells

Asymmetric antiferroelectric liquid crystal displays (AAFLCD) are attractive since they show a very well defined off state and fast switching time. Moreover, they can be driven by a simple biasless DC compensated waveform. The electrooptical response of an AAFLCD allows for new addressing modes, including quasi-static intermediate greyscales maintained without applying a field and passively addressed multiplexed high-frequency displays and spatial light modulators. A new kind of asymmetric cells have been obtained by using fluorinated block copolymer (FBC) alignment, which enhances surface segregation and provides a low energy surface. In this work we combine FBC alignment with antiferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures containing strongly electronegative fluorinated components. Threshold voltages for the antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition as low as 3 volts are observed. We report the time evolution of the shift of the electro-optical response.     

Surface Modification of Halogenated Polymers. 7. Local Reduction of Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) and Poly(chlorotrifluoroethylene) by a Scanning Electrochemical Microscope in the Feedback Mode

Fluoropolymers have been reduced locally by the radical anion of a redox mediator electrogenerated at a microelectrode operating in the configuration of a scanning electrochemical microscope. Approach curves with different redox mediators were used to investigate the reduction mechanism of the fluoropolymer. Different factors are discussed, such as the monomer reduction mechanism, the kinetic control by the surface modification growth, and the conductivity of the modified surface. The fluoropolymers' reduction parallels the trends observed in organic electrochemistry in solution within the haloalkane series.     

Relative Projective and Injective Dimensions

We study the concepts of the 𝒫_C-projective and the ?_C-injective dimensions of a module in the noncommutative case, weakening the condition of C being semidualizing. We give the relations between these dimensions and the C-relative Gorenstein dimensions (G_C-projective and G_C-injective dimensions) of the module. Finally, we compare, in some circumstances, the global 𝒫_C-projective dimension of a ring and the global dimension of the endomorphisms ring of C.     

The influence of antiferroelectric compounds on helical pitch of orthoconic W-1000 mixture

The influence of six antiferroelectric compounds on the helical pitch of mixture W-1000, which was reported as long pitch orthoconic antiferroelectric liquid crystalline mixture, was checked by spectrophotometry and polarimetry methods. The electro-optical properties for the mixture with the longest pitch were measured. An improvement in electro-optical response due to the long pitch is reported. The novelty in electro-optical properties is the good symmetry response.

A family of Halley–Chebyshev iterative schemes for non-Fréchet differentiable operators

A modification of some classical third order methods is studied. The main advantage of these methods is that they do not need evaluate any Fréchet derivative. A convergence theorem in Banach spaces, just assuming that the second divided difference is bounded by a nondecreasing function and a punctual condition, is presented. Fréchet differentiability is not required. Finally, a particular example is analyzed where our conditions are fulfilled and the classical ones fail.     

Synthesis and X-ray structure of N-phenyl phenylglyoxamide

The title compound (C₁₄H₁₁NO₂) is monoclinic with a = 13.579(2), b = 5.297(1), c = 16.455(2) Å, = 98.11(2)°, Z = 4, and space group P2₁/n. The significant structural features lie in the two carbonyl groups of the glyoxamide which are oriented antiperiplanar to each other [–163.6(3)°]. The central bond C(1)–C(2) is 1.545(4) Å. The observed conformation is stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonds.
