Experimental study on the retention of silica particles in gravitational field-flow fractionation effects of the mobile phase composition

Effects of mobile phase composition can play an effective role in modulating the retention of particles in gravitational field-flow fractionation (GFFF), the simplest and cheapest among field-flow fractionation (FFF) techniques. In the framework of an optimized procedure for the GFFF characterization of particulate systems, an experimental approach to the effects of the mobile phase composition on the retention of silica particles retention is presented. The role of the ionic strength and the presence of surfactant are emphasized, with special regards to the shape of the particles. Moreover, the first experimental evidence of potential-barrier GFFF is reported.     

Determination of platinum-group metals and lead in vegetable environmental bio-monitors by voltammetric and spectroscopic techniques: critical comparison

This paper reports voltammetric sequential determination of Pt(II), Pd(II), and Rh(III), by square-wave adsorption stripping voltammetry (SWAdSV), and Pb(II), by square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV), in vegetable environmental matrices. Analytical procedures were verified by the analysis of the standard reference materials: Olive Leaves BCR-CRM 062 and Tomato Leaves NIST-SRM 1573a. Precision and accuracy, expressed as relative standard deviation and relative error, respectively, were always less than 6% and the limits of detection (LOD) for each element were below 0.096 g g^–1. Once set up on the standard reference materials, the analytical procedure was transferred and applied to laurel leaves sampled in proximity to a superhighway and in the Po river mouth area. A critical comparison with spectroscopic measurements is discussed.     

Synthesis and structure of the incomplete cuboidal clusters [W3Se4H3(dmpe)3]+, [W3Se4H(3-x)(OH)x(dmpe)3]+ and [W3Se4(OH)3(dmpe)3]+, and the mechanism of the acid-assisted substitution of the coordinated hydrides

The novel incomplete cuboidal cluster [W3Se4H3(dmpe)3](PF6), [1](PF6), has been prepared by reduction of [W3Se4Br3(dmpe)3](PF6) with LiBH4 in THF solution. The trihydroxo complex [W3Se4(OH)3(dmpe)3](PF6), [2](PF6), was obtained by reacting [W3Se4Br3(dmpe)3](PF6) with NaOH in MeCN-H2O solution. The complexes [1](PF6) and [2](PF6) were converted to their BPh4- salts by treatment with NaBPh4. Recrystallisation of [1](BPh4) in the presence of traces of water affords the mixed dihydride hydroxo complex [W3Se4H2(OH)(dmpe)3](BPh4). The crystal structures of [1](BPh4), [2](BPh4) and [W3Se4H2(OH)(dmpe)3](BPh4) have been resolved. Although the [1]+ trihydride does not react with an excess of halide salts, reaction with HX leads to [W3Se4X3(dmpe)3]+ (X = Cl, Br). The kinetics of this reaction has been studied at 25 degrees C in MeCN-H2O solution (1:1, v/v) and found to occur with two consecutive kinetic steps. The first step is independent of the nature and concentration of the X(-) anion but shows a first order dependence on the concentration of acid (k1 = 12.0 mol(-1) dm(3) s(-1)), whereas the second one is independent of the nature and concentration of both the acid and added salts (k2 = 0.024 s(-1)). In contrast, the reaction of [2]+ with acids occurs in a single step with kobs = 0.63 s(-1)(HCl) and 0.17 s(-1)(HBr). These kinetic results are discussed on the basis of the mechanism previously proposed for the reactions of the analogous [W3S4H3(dmpe)3]+ cluster, with special emphasis on the effects caused by the change of S by Se on the rate constants for the different processes involved.     

NMR spectroscopic characterization of new 2,3‐dihydro‐1,3,4‐thiadiazole derivatives

The ¹H and ¹³C NMR resonances of twenty‐seven 2,2‐dimethyl‐5‐(2‐nitrophenyl‐5‐substituted)‐2,3‐dihydro‐1,3,4‐thiadiazoles, and twenty‐seven 3‐acyl‐5‐(2‐amino‐5‐substituted)‐2,2‐dimethyl‐2,3‐dihydro‐1,3,4‐thiadiazoles were assigned completely using the concerted application of one‐dimensional and two‐dimensional experiments (DEPT, HMQC and HMBC). Intercompany Study to Evaluate the Robustness of Capillary Isoelectric Focusing Technology for the Analysis of Monoclonal Antibodies

Interlaboratory comparisons are essential to bringing emerging technologies into biopharmaceutical industry practice and regulatory acceptance. As a result, an international team including 12 laboratories from 10 independent biopharmaceutical companies in the United States and Switzerland was formed to evaluate the precision and robustness of capillary isoelectric focusing (CIEF) to assess the charge heterogeneity of monoclonal antibodies. The different laboratories determined the apparent pI and the relative distribution of the charge isoforms of a representative monoclonal antibody (rMAb) sample using the same CIEF method. Statistical evaluation of the data was performed to determine within and between-laboratory consistencies and outlying information. The apparent pI data generated for each charge variant peak showed very good precision between laboratories with percentage of RSD values of ??0.5%. Similarly, the percentage of RSD for the rMAb charge variants percent peak area values are ??4.4% across different laboratories with different analysts using different lots of ampholytes and multiple instruments. Taken together, these results validate the appropriate use of CIEF in the biopharmaceutical industry in support of regulatory submissions.

Über Herstellung von Quecksilbersolen durch Reduktion

Zusammenfassung Es wurden zwei Methoden zur Darstellung von kolloidem Quecksilber durch Reduktion von Merkurisalzen ausgearbeitet. Der Dissoziationsgrad der angewandten Merkurisalze ist von gro?em Einflu? auf das Gelingen der Soldarstellung. Es erwies sich, da? nur dann bei der Reduktion von Quecksilbersalzen das Metall in kolloider Form erhalten wird, wenn schon als Zwischenprodukt ein Sol auftritt. Und zwar ist Bedingung, da? dieses Sol Teilchen enth?lt, welche, wie die von Quecksilbersol, negativ geladen sind. Diese Bedingung wird z. B. von Merkuro-, nicht dagegen von Merkurioxydsol erfüllt.     

Surface amplification of invasive cleavage products

A major focus of current efforts in genomics is to elucidate the genetic variations extent within the human population, and to study the effects of these variations upon the human system. The most common type of genetic variations are the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which occur every 500-1000 nt in the genome. Large-scale population association studies to study the biological or medical significance of such variations may require the analysis of hundreds of thousands of SNPs on thousands of individuals. We are pursuing development of an approach to large-scale SNP analysis that combines the specificity of invasive cleavage reactions with the parallelism of high density DNA arrays. A surface-immobilized probe oligonucleotide is specifically cleaved in the presence of a complementary target sequence in unamplified human genomic DNA, yielding a 5' phosphate group. High sensitivity detection of this reaction product on the surface is achieved by the use of rolling circle amplification, with an approximate concentration detection limit of 10 fM target DNA. This combination of very specific surface cleavage and highly sensitive surface detection will make possible the rapid and parallel analysis of genetic variations across large populations.     

Synthesis of tribenzyl D-gluco- and D-galactopyranosides

The synthesis of ethyl-3,4,6-tri-O-benzyl-D -glucopyranoside and of ethyl-3,4,6-tri-O-benzyl-D -galactopyranoside is described. These compounds are isomers of ethyl-3,5,6-tri-O-benzyl-D -glucofuranoside, GLYVENOL ®, a substance displaying interesting pharmacological actions.
