Organocobalt cluster complexes X. Evidence for the methylidynetricobalt nonacarbonyl radical

The azobisisobutyronitrile-initiated addition of HCCo₃(CO)₉ to the CC bonds of allyl acetate and allyl ethyl ether to give (OC)₉Co₃C(CH₂)₃O₂CCH₃ and (OC)₉Co₃C(CH₂)₃OC₂H₅, respectively, demonstrated the accessibility of the ·CCo₃(CO)₉ radical.     

The reaction of 3,3-dichloroallyltrimethylsilane with n-butyllithium

n-Butyllithium reacts with 3,3-dichloroallyltrimethylsilane to metalate the vinyl proton. Under the reaction conditions the Me₃SiCH₂C(Li)CCl₂ formed undergoes β-elimination of LiCl to give ClCCCH₂SiMe₃ whose subsequent reaction with n-butyllithium produces LiCCCH₂SiMe₃. Addition of trimethylchlorosilane gives Me₃SiCCCH₂SiMe₃. When two molar equivalents of n-butyllithium are used, further metalation of LiCCCH₂SiMe₃ gives LiCCCH(Li)SiMe₃. The action of N-bromosuccinimide on Me₃SiCH₂CHCCl₂ resulted in formation of Me₃SiCHCHCCl₂Br.

Reaction of octacarbonyldicobalt with LiC₆H₅ and subsequent treatment withEt ₃OBF₄ yields the cluster complex1. The expected complex2 is not obtained. Preparation, spectroscopic data and X-ray analysis are described.

Calculation of transition metal compounds using an extension of the CNDO formalism. V. many body effects in the inner valence shell photoionization spectra of free and coordinated carbon monoxide

The inner valence shell region in the photoionization spectra of NiCO, Ni(CO)₄ and Cr(CO)₆ is studied by means of a diagonal two-particle—hole Tamm—Dancoff approximation. Many body effects are found in the energy range of the CO-ligand ionizations. The effects are more pronounced in NiCO and Ni(CO)₄ than in Cr(CO)₆. Since similar results have to be expected for adsorbate systems, the interpretation of photoemission spectra of such systems on the basis of the simple one particle picture should be handled with care.
