Assessment of Hydrocarbon Electron‐Impact Ionization Cross Section Measurements for Magnetic Fusion

Partial ionization cross section experiments have been carried out recently at the University of Innsbruck for three types of hydrocarbons, i.e. acetylene, ethylene and propene. Cross section data fits are generated and compared to the compilation of earlier experimental data summarized in the online database HYDKIN [www.hydkin.de]. New data fits are brought into a suitable form to be incorporated into the database. In order to illuminate underlying dissociation mechanisms the energy dependence of branching ratios above energies of 20 –30 eV is reviewed in light of the present results (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In-beam spectroscopy of 253, 254No

In-beam conversion electron spectroscopy experiments have been performed on the transfermium nuclei ^{253, 254}No using the conversion electron spectrometer SACRED in nearly collinear geometry in conjunction with the gas-filled separator RITU at the University of Jyv?skyl?. The experimental setup is discussed and the spectra are compared to Monte Carlo simulations. The implications for the ground-state configuration of ²⁵³No are discussed. Theta functions and symplectic groups

A. Weil introduced in 1964 theta functions on locally compact commutative groups (cf.[5]III). It is shown here that the use of certain function spaces on such a groupG, and the consideration of theta functions on the productG×G, gives some insight into the structures involved, also in connection with Poisson's formula.

Measurement of the electric form factor of the neutron at Q2 = 0.3-0.8 (GeV/ c) 2 ⋆

The electric form factor of the neutron, G_E,n, has been measured at the Mainz Microtron by recoil polarimetry in the quasielastic D(¯e, e¯n)p reaction. Three data points have been extracted at squared four-momentum transfers Q ² = 0.3, 0.6 and 0.8 (GeV/c)². Corrections for nuclear binding effects have been applied.This revised version was published online in March 2005. In the previous version, the email address of one author was inadvertently assigned to multiple authors.     

"Safe" Coulomb excitation of 30Mg

We report on the first radioactive beam experiment performed at the recently commissioned REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN in conjunction with the highly efficient gamma spectrometer MINIBALL. Using 30Mg ions accelerated to an energy of 2.25 MeV/u together with a thin (nat)Ni target, Coulomb excitation of the first excited 2+ states of the projectile and target nuclei well below the Coulomb barrier was observed. From the measured relative deexcitation gamma-ray yields the B(E2;0(+)gs-->2(+)1) value of 30Mg was determined to be 241(31)e2 fm4. Our result is lower than values obtained at projectile fragmentation facilities using the intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation method, and confirms the theoretical conjecture that the neutron-rich magnesium isotope 30Mg resides outside the "island of inversion."     

Evolution of multilevel order in supramolecular assemblies

The process of self-assembly at multiple length scales of bis-urea substituted toluene on a Au(111) surface was studied by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Pattern formation is controlled by specific hydrogen bonds between these molecules but also by significantly weaker lateral coupling between the resulting supramolecular polymers and a quasiepitaxial interlocking with the substrate. The ordered assemblies exhibit a tunnel transparency. Our experiments indicate the necessity of multiple interactions of different strengths for obtaining ordered structures with hierarchical levels of organization.     

Nuclear structure and formation mechanism of heavy shell-stabilized nuclei

In a series of experiments, ⁴⁸Ca induced cold fusion reactions on Pb targets were employed to populate states in ^253,254No isotopes. The groundstate band of ²⁵⁴No is identified up to spin 20⁺. The deduced quadrupole deformation is β=0.27(2). Evidence for decays from a rotational band built on a 7/2[624] configuration was obtained in ²⁵³No. The initial angular momentum and excitation energy of ^253,254No residues, after neutron emission, was determined. States up to spin 22 ? and excitation energy of E ^*=8.5 MeV were observed. The data provide direct information on the fission barrier at high spins B _f ≥5 MeV, and on the shell-correction energy E _shell ^exp ≥4.1 MeV.
