The development of hydrogels resulting from the self-assembly of low molecular weight (LMW) hydrogelators is a rapidly expanding area of study. Fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) protected aromatic amino acids derived from phenylalanine (Phe) have been shown to be highly effective LMW hydrogelators. It has been found that side chain functionalization of Fmoc-Phe exerts a significant effect on the self-assembly and hydrogelation behavior of these molecules; fluorinated derivatives, including pentafluorophenylalanine (F(5)-Phe) and 3-F-phenylalanine (3-F-Phe), spontaneously self-assemble into fibrils that form a hydrogel network upon dissolution into water. In this study, Fmoc-F(5)-Phe-OH and Fmoc-3-F-Phe-OH were used to characterize the role of the C-terminal carboxylic acid on the self-assembly and hydrogelation of these derivatives. The C-terminal carboxylic acid moieties of Fmoc-F(5)-Phe-OH and Fmoc-3-F-Phe-OH were converted to C-terminal amide and methyl ester groups in order to perturb the hydrophobicity and hydrogen bond capacity of the C-terminus. Self-assembly and hydrogelation of these derivatives was investigated in comparison to the parent carboxylic acid compounds at neutral and acidic pH. It was found that hydrogelation of the C-terminal acids was highly sensitive to solvent pH, which influences the charge state of the terminal group. Rigid hydrogels form at pH 3.5, but at pH 7 hydrogel rigidity is dramatically weakened. C-terminal esters self-assembled into fibrils only slowly and failed to form hydrogels due to the higher hydrophobicity of these derivatives. C-terminal amide derivatives assembled much more rapidly than the parent carboxylic acids at both acidic and neutral pH, but the resultant hydrogels were unstable to shear stress as a function of the lower water solubility of the amide functionality. Co-assembly of acid and amide functionalized monomers was also explored in order to characterize the properties of hybrid hydrogels; these gels were rigid in unbuffered water but significantly weaker in phosphate buffered saline. These results highlight the complex nature of monomer/solvent interactions and their ultimate influence on self-assembly and hydrogelation, and provide insight that will facilitate the development of optimal amino acid LMW hydrogelators for gelation of complex buffered media.  相似文献

Electrostatic interactions between charged, distant colloids in a bulk electrolyte solution do not depend on the inherent structure of ions and a solvent forming a double layer. For charged colloids trapped at an interface between an electrolyte and air this no longer holds; as the electrostatic interactions are mediated via air and the field lines determining the interactions originate at the charged surface, these details come into prominence. Using the Langevin-Poisson-Boltzmann equation we investigate how steric effects and the polarization saturation of a solvent effect the contact potential at the colloid surface and, in consequence, the long range interactions between colloids trapped at an interface. For a surface charge 0.4 C m(-2) the combination of these effects can increase the interactions by up to ~40 times when compared to Poisson-Boltzmann calculations. The validity of these enhancement mechanisms is supported by recent experimental data (K. Masschaele et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 2010, 105, 048303).  相似文献

Extended π-conjugation in molecular systems is being extensively exploited in a rapidly expanding range of electronic and photonic applications. The modification of such extended systems through the use of heteroatoms allows their tailoring to specific requirements. In particular, the use of the vacant boron p(π) orbital can increase the electron affinity of the extended π system in an analogous fashion to the p-doping of crystalline silicon used in more classical microelectronic devices. Experimental data on such modifications of the empty level structures of boron-containing π-electron materials leading to an increase in their electron affinity are not available in the literature. Using Electron Transmission Spectroscopy, the energies of the vertical anion formation of 5-methyl-2-furanboronic acid pinacol ester (1) and 4-methyl-3-thiopheneboronic acid pinacol ester (2) are measured and compared with those of the reference unsubstituted heteroaromatics furan and thiophene. The results are interpreted with the support of density functional theory (DFT) calculations with the B3LYP functional. DFT calculations are also used to predict the effects of boryl substituents on the electronic and geometrical structures of trans and cis thienyl thiazole.  相似文献

Btzn (1), an amine-functionalized bi(1,3,5-triazine) 4,4'-(NH(2))(2)-6,6'-(NHC(6)H(5))(2)-2,2'-(1,3,5-C(3)N(3))(2), is reported, and its coordination with Co, Ni and Cu is explored. Reactions of metal salts (2 equiv) with Btzn (1 equiv) result in dimeric species [(Btzn)Co(2)(NCS)(4)(EtOH)(2)(DMF)(2)], (2), [(Btzn)Ni(2)(η(1)-ONO(2))(2)(MeOH)(4)(DMF)(2)]·2[NO(3)], (3), [(Btzn)Cu(2)Cl(4)(DMF)(2)], (4), and [(Btzn)Cu(2)(η(2)-O(2)NO)(2)(OH(2))(2)(DMF)(2)]·2[NO(3)], (5). These complexes are the first examples of the coordination of transition metals with bi(1,3,5-triazine) ligands. Their structures display a bridging bis-bidentate coordination mode for Btzn. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility of the complexes reveals antiferromagnetic exchange between the spin carriers, with calculated exchange coupling values (J) of -4.7 cm(-1) for 3, -18.2 cm(-1) for 4, and -5.5 cm(-1) for 5. An in-depth evaluation of the metal geometry highlights the inefficient overlap of the magnetic d-orbitals through the bridging ligand, most likely leading to reduced delocalization and coupling.  相似文献

The molecular structure of 1-thia-closo-decaborane(9), 1-SB(9)H(9), has been determined by the concerted use of gas electron diffraction and quantum-chemical calculations. Assuming C(4v) symmetry, the cage structure was distorted from a symmetrically bicapped square antiprism (D(4d) symmetry) mainly through substantial expansion of the tetragonal belt of boron atoms adjacent to sulfur. The S-B and (B-B)(mean) distances are well determined with r(h1) = 193.86(14) and 182.14(8) pm, respectively. Geometrical parameters calculated using the MP2(full)/6-311++G** method and at levels reported earlier [MP2(full)/6-311G**, B3LYP/6-311G** and B3LYP/cc-pVQZ], as well as calculated vibrational amplitudes and (11)B NMR chemical shifts, are in good agreement with the experimental findings. In particular, the so-called antipodal chemical shift of apical B(10) (71.8 ppm) is reproduced well by the GIAO-MP2 calculations and its large magnitude is schematically accounted for, as is the analogous antipodal chemical shift of B(12) in the twelve-vertex closo-1-SB(11)H(11).  相似文献

We demonstrate a field-portable upright and inverted microscope that can image specimens in both reflection and transmission modes. This compact and cost-effective dual-mode microscope weighs only ~135 grams (<4.8 ounces) and utilizes a simple light emitting diode (LED) to illuminate the sample of interest using a beam-splitter cube that is positioned above the object plane. This LED illumination is then partially reflected from the sample to be collected by two lenses, creating a reflection image of the specimen onto an opto-electronic sensor-array that is positioned above the beam-splitter cube. In addition to this, the illumination beam is also partially transmitted through the same specimen, which then casts lensfree in-line holograms of the same objects onto a second opto-electronic sensor-array that is positioned underneath the beam-splitter cube. By rapid digital reconstruction of the acquired lensfree holograms, transmission images (both phase and amplitude) of the same specimen are also created. We tested the performance of this field-portable microscope by imaging various micro-particles, blood smears as well as a histopathology slide corresponding to skin tissue. Being compact, light-weight and cost-effective, this combined reflection and transmission microscope might especially be useful for telemedicine applications in resource limited settings.  相似文献

The growth of noble‐metal single crystals via the flame fusion method was developed in the 1980s. Since then, there have been no major advancements to the technique until the recent development of the controlled‐atmosphere flame fusion (CAFF) method to grow non‐noble Ni single crystals. Herein, we demonstrate the generality of this method with the first preparation of fcc Cu as well as the first hcp and bcc single crystals of Co and Fe, respectively. The high quality of the single crystals was verified using scanning electron microscopy and Laue X‐ray backscattering. Based on Wulff constructions, the equilibrium shapes of the single‐crystal particles were studied, confirming the symmetry of the fcc, hcp, and bcc single‐crystal lattices. The low cost of the CAFF method makes all kinds of high‐quality non‐noble single crystals independent of their lattice accessible for use in electrocatalysis, electrochemistry, surface science, and materials science.  相似文献

The process relies on the efficient and controlled reduction of tertiary amides by a sodium hydride/sodium iodide composite, in situ treatment of the resulting anionic hemiaminal with trimethylsilyl chloride and subsequent coupling with nucleophilic reagents including Grignard reagents and tetrabutylammonium cyanide. The new method exhibits broad functional‐group compatibility, operates under transition‐metal‐free reaction conditions, and is suitable for various synthetic applications on both sub‐millimole and on multigram scales.  相似文献
