A novel high-throughput technique has been developed for the investigation of the influence of supported metal particle size and the support on electrocatalytic activity. Arrays with a gradation of catalyst particle sizes are fabricated in a physical vapor deposition system that also allows selection of the support material. Simultaneous electrochemical measurements at all electrodes in the array, together with determination of the actual particle size distribution on each of the electrodes by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), then allows rapid determination of the activity as a function of catalyst center size. The procedure is illustrated using data for the reduction of oxygen on gold nanoparticles supported on both substoichiometric titanium dioxide (TiO(x)()) and carbon and the conclusions are verified using voltammetry at rotating disk electrodes. Gold centers with diameters in the range 1.4-6.3 nm were investigated and it is demonstrated that, with both supports, the catalytic activity for oxygen reduction decays rapidly for particle sizes below 3.0 nm. This may be observed as a decrease in current at constant potential or an increase in the overpotential for oxygen reduction.  相似文献

We report charge inversion, the sign reversal of the effective surface charge in the presence of multivalent counterions, for the biologically relevant regimes of divalent ions and mixtures of monovalent and multivalent ions. Using streaming currents, the pressure-driven transport of countercharges in the diffuse layer, we find that charge inversion occurs in rectangular silica nanochannels at high concentrations of divalent ions. Strong monovalent screening is found to cancel charge inversion, restoring the original surface charge polarity. An analytical model based on ion correlations successfully describes our observations.  相似文献

A stereoselective one-pot synthesis of substituted 1,2-thiazetidine 1,1-dioxides (beta-sultams) has been achieved from heterocyclic pentafluorophenyl (PFP) sulfonates. Mild N-O bond cleavage of isoxazolidines followed by intramolecular cyclization of the amine onto the PFP demonstrates the potential utility for using the PFP sulfonate as a valuable precursor to sulfonamides. Advances in protein crystallography and homology modeling techniques are producing vast amounts of high resolution protein structure data at ever increasing rates. As such, the ability to quickly and easily extract structural similarities is a key tool in discovering important functional relationships. We report on an approach for creating and maintaining a database of pairwise structure alignments for a comprehensive database comprising the PDB and homology models for the human and select pathogen genomes. Our approach consists of a novel, multistage method for determining pairwise structural similarity coupled with an efficient clustering protocol that approximates a full NxN assessment in a fraction of the time. Since biologists are commonly interested in recently released structures, and the homology models built from them, an automatically updating database of structural alignments has great value. Our approach yields a querying system that allows scientists to retrieve databank-wide protein structure similarities as easily as retrieving protein sequence similarities via BLAST or PSI-BLAST. An extensive experimental screen, coupled with a computational study, revealed seven new solid-state forms of β-resorcylic acid. The known, stable polymorph II° shows a reversible phase transformation to the new, kinetically stable, probably disordered high temperature form I.
