In this study, we calculate the interaction energy of intrinsic point defects vacancies and interstitials) with screw dislocations in body-centered cubic iron. First (we calculate the dipole tensor of a defect in the bulk crystal using molecular statics. Using a formulation based on linear elasticity theory, we calculate the interaction energy of the defect and the dislocation using both isotropic and anisotropic strain fields. Second, we perform atomistic calculations using molecular statics methods to directly calculate the interaction energy. Results from these two methods are compared. We verify that continuum methods alone are unable to correctly predict the interactions of defects and dislocations near the core. Although anisotropic theory agrees qualitatively with atomistics far from the core, it cannot predict which dumbbell orientations are stable and any continuum calculations must be used with caution. Spontaneous absorption by the core of both vacancies and dumbbells is seen. Interactions of surfactants with hydrophobically modified polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions are important in several applications such as detergency, cosmetics, food, and paints. Complexes formed in these systems raise some fundamental questions about the polymer-surfactant interactions that control their behavior. In this work, the interactions of a nonionic surfactant, penta-ethyleneglycol mono n-dodecyl ether (C(12)EO(5)), with a hydrophobically modified anionic polymer, poly(maleic acid/octyl vinyl ether) (PMAOVE), in aqueous solutions were studied using surface tension, viscosity, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, light scattering, and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. When the nonionic surfactant C(12)EO(5) was added to aqueous solutions of the anionic polymer PMAOVE, it was incorporated into the hydrophobic nanodomains of PMAOVE far below the the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the surfactant. Two inflection points were observed corresponding to the critical complexation concentration (formation of mixed micelles composed of C(12)EO(5) and the octyl chains of PMAOVE) and the saturation concentration (saturation of the polymer with C(12)EO(5) molecules). Above the saturation concentration, the coexistence of pure C(12)EO(5) micelles and mixed micelles of PMAOVE and C(12)EO(5) was observed. The interaction of a hydrophobically modified anionic polymer (PMAOVE) with a cationic surfactant (DTAB) was studied using a multi-technique approach: turbidity, surface tension, and viscosity measurements, as well as EPR (5-doxyl stearic acid) and fluorescence (pyrene) probe techniques were used. In the investigated pH range (4-10), the cationic surfactant headgroups interact with the anionic carboxylic groups of the polymer backbone. In addition, nonpolar interactions of the surfactant chains with the n-octyl chains of PMAOVE stabilize the PMAOVE-DTAB complexes. Charge neutralization of the anionic polymer by the cationic surfactant leads to precipitation of the PMAOVE-DTAB complex at a certain DTAB concentration range. Further addition of DTAB causes a charge reversal of the complex and, subsequently, resolubilization of the precipitate. At an acidic pH (pH = 4), a second precipitation was observed, which is probably caused by conformational changes in the PMAOVE-DTAB complex. This second precipitate can be resolubilized by further addition of surfactant. At a neutral and basic pH, this second precipitation is absent. EPR analysis indicates that the surfactants form an ordered structure at the extended polymer chain at a neutral and basic pH, whereas at an acidic pH, a less ordered surfactant layer is formed on the coiled polymer with more hydrophobic microdomains. 相似文献

The present study reports the competitive adsorptive removal of cadmium (Cd(II)) and zinc (Zn(II)) ions from binary systems using rice husk ash (RHA), a waste obtained from the rice husk-fired furnaces, as an adsorbent. The initial pH (pH0) affects significantly the capacity of RHA for adsorbing the metallic ions in the aqueous solution. The pH0 ≈ 6.0 is found to be the optimum for the removal of Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions by RHA. The single ion equilibrium adsorption from the binary solution is better represented by the non-competitive Redlich–Peterson (R–P) and the Freundlich models than by Langmuir model in the initial metal concentration range of 10–100 mg/l. The adsorption of Zn(II) ion is more than that of Cd(II) ion, and this trend is in agreement with the single-component adsorption data. The equilibrium metal removal decreases with increasing concentrations of the other metal ion and the combined effect of Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions on RHA is generally found to be antagonistic. Non-modified Langmuir, modified Langmuir, extended-Langmuir, extended-Freundlich, Sheindorf–Rebuhn–Sheintuch (SRS), non-modified R–P and modified R–P adsorption models were tested to find the most appropriate competitive adsorption isotherm for the binary adsorption of Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions onto RHA by minimizing the Marquardt's percent standard deviation (MPSD) error function. Interactions between sodium dodecyl sulfate and zein protein, a model system for the understanding of the effect of surfactants on skin, were investigated using a range of techniques involving UV-vis spectroscopy, TOC (total organic carbon analysis), electrophoresis, and static and dynamic light scattering. Zein protein was solubilized by SDS. The adsorption of SDS onto insoluble protein fraction caused the zeta potential of the complex to become more negative. From these values, we calculated the Gibbs energy of absorption, which decreases when the SDS concentration is raised. Finally the structure of the complex, based on the analysis by static and dynamic light scattering, is proposed to be rod like. 相似文献

Asphaltenic solids formed in the Rangely field in the course of a carbon dioxide flood and heptane insolubles in the oil from the same field were used in this study. Four different solvents were used to dissolve the asphaltenes. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was used to determine the onset of asphaltene precipitation by heptane titration. When the onset values were plotted versus asphaltene concentrations, distinct break points (called critical aggregation concentrations (CAC) in this paper) were observed. CACs for the field asphaltenes dissolved in toluene, trichloroethylene, tetrahydrofuran, and pyridine occurred at concentrations of 3.0, 3.7, 5.0, and 8.2 g/l, respectively. CACs are observed at similar concentrations as critical micelle concentrations (CMC) for the asphaltenes in the solvents employed and can be interpreted to be the points at which rates of asphaltene aggregations change. CMC values of asphaltenes determined from surface tension measurements (in pyridine and TCE) were slightly higher than the CAC values measured by NIR onset measurements. The CAC for heptane-insoluble asphaltenes in toluene was 3.1 g/l. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and elemental compositions of the two asphaltenes showed that the H/C ratio of the heptane-insoluble asphaltenes was higher and molecular weight (measured by vapor pressure osmometry) was lower. 相似文献

Complexes of ruthenium(III) with N,N'-disalicylidene-l,2-phenylenediamine (H2dsp), N,N'-disalicylidene-3,4-diaminotoluene (H2dst), 4-nitro-N,N'-disalicylidene-1,2-phenylenediamine (H2ndsp) and N,N'-disalicylidene ethylenediamine (H2salen) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, spectral methods (mid-infrared, 1H NMR and UV-vis spectra) and simultaneous thermal analysis (TG and DTG) techniques. The molar conductance measurements proved that all these complexes are non-electrolytes. The electronic spectra measurements were used to infer the structures. The IR spectra of the ligands and their complexes are used to identify the type of bonding. The kinetic thermodynamic parameters such as: E*, DeltaH*, DeltaS* and DeltaG* are estimated from the DTG curves. The present study deals with the use of poly aluminium chloride (PAC) as a coagulant and bagasse fly ash (BFA), which is generated in sugar mills, as an adsorbent for the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and colour of pulp and paper mill effluents. Under optimal conditions of pH 3 and initial PAC dosage of 3 g/l, about 80% COD removal and 90% colour removal were obtained. The optimal conditions for the adsorptive removal of COD and colour with BFA were pH 4 and BFA dosage of 2 g/l. Under these conditions, COD and colour removal were, respectively, 50 and 55%. Adsorptive removal of COD by BFA followed second-order kinetics. Intra-particle diffusion was found to be rate controlling. Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms were found to fit the equilibrium adsorption data with BFA. Two-stage treatment using PAC (3 g/l) as a coagulant in the first stage and BFA (2 g/l) as an adsorbent in the second stage gave the combined COD and colour removal of nearly 87 and 95%, respectively, for different effluents without any pH adjustment. Two-stage adsorptive treatment using BFA (2 g/l) in both the stages gave a combined COD and colour removal of about 70%. The sludge obtained can be dewatered by centri-clarifiers, dried, briquetted and incinerated to recover its energy content. 相似文献
