Synthesis and properties of new glucocationic surfactants: model structures for marking cationic surfactants with carbohydrates

[reaction: see text] In this work, we report the synthesis of a new series of glucocationic surfactants, a class of surfactants we introduced very recently. The preparation of the surfactants is based on the synthesis of the 2-bromoethyl-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside, whose preparation was studied in order to improve yields and stereoselectivity of this key intermediate. These glucocationic amphiphiles were prepared and studied as a model of cationic surfactants marked with a carbohydrate moiety. The use of carbohydrates as markers on cationic lipids was recently introduced to induce recognition by specific receptors, present on the surface of cell membranes. The chemicophysical characterization of these model structures can give more insight on the aggregation behavior. Conductivity and surface tension measurements were performed in order to characterize the compounds from the amphiphilic point of view. The results showed a different effect of the glucosidic moiety on the cmc value with respect to the glucopyridinium cationic surfactants. The surfactants also showed the tendency to form premicellar aggregates in solution when the hydrophobicity is raised.     

Comparative EIS study of a paste electrode containing zinc powder in neutral and near neutral solutions

The corrosion and passivation of Zn powder particles dispersed in a paste electrode immersed in 0.5 M Na₂SO₄ and 5×10^–3 M Na₂HPO₄ solutions were studied mainly by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The role played by diffusion in the mechanism of anodic oxidation of zinc powder particles has been shown. It was demonstrated that the anodic reactionof Zn powder in neutral or near neutral media involves at least two adsorbed intermediates. By simulating the porous structure of the electrode, some information about porous nature of zinc electrode could be extracted. Electronic Publication     

Spectroscopic and photochemical properties of the lichen compound lobaric acid

Lichens synthesize and accumulate photoprotective compounds against possible damage induced by UV radiation in the photobiont. A biological model has been recently formulated that allows the use of lichens to evaluate changes at different UV radiation levels. The thermodynamics, photophysical and photochemical properties of lobaric acid were studied in acetonitrile, ethanol and Brij 35(3%) micelles at different pH values. Also the sun protector factor (SPF) was determined by in vitro methods. Lobaric acid was extracted from Stereoculon alpinum Laur. and characterized by means of standard procedures. Solutions were irradiated in oxygen and under nitrogen conditions with a UV medium pressure lamp. Lobaric acid absorbs at 287, 303 nm, and no fluorescence emission was observed. The maximum value of the molar extinction coefficient (5479.6 M(-1) cm(-1)) was obtained in Brij 35 at pH 12. Solubility is pH dependant and is highest in Brij 35 at pH 12 (4.45 x 10(-4) M). Photoconsumption quantum yields ranged between 10(-4) and 10(-5) in aerobic and anaerobic experimental conditions. Lobaric acid SPF was very low (0.5) compared with homosalate (4.0), (reference solar filter). Two pKa values, 5.05 (carboxylic acid group deprotonation) and 9.75 (phenolic OH deprotonation), were determined.

P-Partitions and the plactic congruence

A conjecture of Stanley states that if the generating function of a posetP is symmetric, then in factP belongs to the family of posets induced by some skew shape /. Synthesis of new tren-based tris-macrocycles. Anion cluster assembling inside the cavity generated by a bowl-shaped receptor

The synthesis of three new tris-macrocycles, containing three [12]aneN(4) (L1), [12]aneN(3)O (L2), or [14]aneN(4) (L3) moieties appended to a tren unit, is reported. The crystal structure of the [(Na(ClO(4))(6)) subset L1(2)H(13)]Na(6)Cl(2)(ClO(4))(12) compound shows the anionic cluster [Na(ClO(4))(6)](5)(-) assembled inside the cavity defined by two bowl-shaped polyammonium receptors, held by multiple charge-charge and hydrogen bond interactions.     

Measurement of L&agr; and Lß X-ray fluorescence cross sections in Er, Ta, W and Au by 16.896–59.543 keV photons

La and Lb X-ray fluorescence cross sections in Er, Ta, W and Au at excitation energies of 16.896, 22.581, 25.770, 32.890, 38.184, 43.949, 50.214 and 59.5 keV were investigated. Measurements were made using a low energy Si(Li) detector coupled to a model 4096 computerized multi-channel analyser. The experimental results were compared with the theoretically calculated values of L X-rays fluorescence cross sections and other experimental results. Good agreement was observed between experimental and theoretical values.
