Metamorphosis of images in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces

Metamorphosis is a method for diffeomorphic matching of shapes, with many potential applications for anatomical shape comparison in medical imagery, a problem which is central to the field of computational anatomy. An important tool for the practical application of metamorphosis is a numerical method based on shooting from the initial momentum, as this would enable the use of statistical methods based on this momentum, as well as the estimation of templates from hyper-templates using morphing. In this paper we introduce a shooting method, in the particular case of morphing images that lie in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS). We derive the relevant shooting equations from a Lagrangian frame of reference, present the details of the numerical approach, and illustrate the method through morphing of some simple images.     

On Privations and Their Perception

Despite its admirable bottom-up methodology, Roy Sorensen's Seeing Dark Things (OUP, 2008) raises difficult theoretical questions concerning the metaphysics and perception of absences. Metaphysical difficulties include how to individuate, count, locate, and classify absences, and what determines their features. Perceptual difficulties include how to distinguish experiences of absences and presences, especially when nonveridical, and what subjects contribute to perceptual experience according to Sorensen's causal theory. In addition to articulating these difficulties, this paper also presents and explores, on Sorensen's terms, an alternative account of silence.     

Hydroalkoxylation catalyzed by a gold(I) complex encapsulated in a supramolecular host

Gold(I)-phosphine complexes are readily encapsulated by a tetrahedral supramolecular host (Ga(4)L(6)). We have investigated the catalytic activity of the resulting complexes for the intramolecular hydroalkoxylation of allenes. The catalytic activity of Me(3)PAuBr was increased 8-fold by encapsulation, as determined by initial rate kinetics, and we observed up to 67 catalytic turnovers by Me(3)PAu(+) encapsulated in Ga(4)L(6).     

A concise stereocontrolled formal total synthesis of (+/-)-podophyllotoxin using sulfoxide chemistry

A short stereoselective formal total synthesis of (+/-)-podophyllotoxin has been carried out from a sulfoxide, using a one-pot tandem conjugate addition/aldol/electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction to form a tetralin, which was converted into picropodophyllin in two steps.     

Water exchange from the oxo-centered rhodium(III) trimer [Rh3(mu3-O)(mu-O2CCH3)6(OH2)3]+: a high-pressure 17O NMR study

Water exchange from the oxo-centered rhodium(III) trimer, [Rh3(mu3-O)(mu-O2CCH3)6(OH2)3]+, was investigated using variable-temperature (272.8-281.6 K) and variable-pressure (0.1-200 MPa) 17O NMR spectroscopy. The exchange reaction was also monitored at three different acidities (pH = 1.8, 2.9, and 5.7) in which the molecule is in the fully protonated form (pKa = 8.3 (+/-0.2), I = 0.1 M, T = 298 K). The temperature dependence of the pseudo-first-order rate coefficient for water exchange yields the following kinetic parameters: k(ex)298 = 5 x 10(-3) s(-1), deltaH(double dagger) = 99 (+/-3) kJ mol(-1), and deltaS(double dagger) = 43 (+/-10) J K(-1) mol(-1). The enhanced reactivity of the terminal waters, some 6 orders of magnitude faster than water exchange from Rh(H2O)6(3+), is likely due to trans-labilization from the central oxide ion. Also, another contributing factor is the low average charge on the metal ions (+0.33/Rh). Variation of reaction rate with pressure results in a deltaV(double dagger) = +5.3 (+/-0.4) cm3 mol(-1), indicative of an interchange-dissociative (I(d)) pathway. These results are consistent with those published by Sasaki et al. who proposed that water substitution from rhodium(III) and ruthenium(III) oxo-centered trimers follows a dissociative mechanism based on highly positive activation parameters (Sasaki, Y.; Nagasawa, A.; Tokiwa-Yamanoto, A.; Ito, T. Inorg. Chim. Acta 1993, 212, 175-182).     

Measurement of B(0)(d)-B_(0)(d) mixing rate from the time evolution of dilepton events at the upsilon(4S)

We report a determination of the B(0)(d)-&B_(0)(d) mixing parameter Deltam(d) based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in Upsilon(4S) decays. The measurement is based on a 5.9 fb(-1) data sample collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression containing Deltam(d) as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we obtain Deltam(d) = 0.463+/-0.008 (stat)+/-0.016 (syst) ps(-1). This is the first determination of Deltam(d) from time evolution measurements at the Upsilon(4S). We also place limits on possible CPT violations.
