Using integer programming techniques for the solution of an experimental design problem

Latin hypercube sampling is often used to estimate the distribution function of a complicated function of many random variables. In so doing, it is typically necessary to choose a permutation matrix which minimizes the correlation among the cells in the hypercube layout. This problem can be formulated as a generalized, multi-dimensional assignment problem. For the two-dimensional case, we provide a polynomial algorithm. Isoenstrophy points and surfaces in turbulent flow and mixing

Vorticity ω magnitude is measured by the enstrophy field ω². Equations describing the motion of surfaces of constant enstrophy, and lines and points of extreme enstrophy, are derived. The purpose is to develop better tools for studies of small scale processes of turbulence and turbulent mixing.     

In-situ ethanol probe based on sample dilution in a double-membrane system

An in-situ probe suitable for monitoring ethanol in fermentors or other bioreactors is described. It is constructed with an ethanol-permeable double membrane covering a solid-state tin(IV) oxide sensor for gas detection. A stream of nitrogen is passed between the two membranes in order to dilute the ethanol vapour from the fermentor that has passed through the first membrane, before it reaches the second membrane covering the detector. A 100-fold dilution was obtained at a flow rate of 30 ml min^?1 of the diluent gas. The delay time was less than 5 min to obtain 80% of maximum response.     

Determination of glycosylation sites in O-linked glycopeptides: A sensitive mass spectrometric protocol

A sensitive mass spectrometric method for the specific identification of O-glycosylation sites in glycopeptides is presented. Reductive β-elimination liberates a peptide containing a specifically modified amino acid at the former site of carbohydrate attachment. Mass spectrometry is used to determine the sequence of the modified peptide, in which the position of the modified amino acid marks the site of O-glycosylation. The method also provides information on the carbohydrate chain and is applicable at the low nanomolar level.
