Optimum gas chromatographic conditions in wall-coated capillary columns. Extended and simplified forms of the Golay-equation

Band broadening in capillary columns is satisfactorily described by the Golay-equation extended to situations of appreciable pressure drop by Giddings. In practice, however, several simplifications are often made. The effect of these simplifications on the calculated values of the minimum plate height and optimum carrier gas velocity are treated systematically.     

Application of Carbowax 20M as an open-tubular liquid phase in analyses of nutritionally important fats and oils.

In the first part, the reasons for the choice of Carbowax 20M-terephthalic acid as a liquid phase are indicated and the technique for preparation of columns is descirbed. The ECL of 14 to 24 carbon fatty acids (branched and positional isomers of unsaturated acids) as well as the accuracy of determination of some fatty acids, are presented. In the second part, examples of chromatograms are given as well as tables concerning the composition of various fats: vegetable oils, depot fats, and fats from organs of monogastric species, polygastric species, and fish.     

Thermal degradation of copolymers of styrene and methyl-vinyl-silane by pyrolysis gas chromatography

Pyrolysis gas chromatographic investigations have been carried out on copolymers of styrene with trimethyl-vinyl-silane and of styrene with dimethyl-phenyl-vinyl-silane, in order to study the mechansims of thermal degradation and the copolymer structures. We have identified the pyrolysis products and measured their relative amounts. The experiments show that the controlling factor in the mechanism of the degradation is the nature of the side-group attached to the carbon atom at which chain scission occurs. If this side-group is phenyl, the main degradation process is depropagation; if it is if it is trimethyl-silyl or dimethyl-phenyl-silyl, intramolecular hydrogen abstraction followed by β scission becomes more important than depropagation. From the point of view of degradation mechanism, the nature of the side-group attached to the carbon atom from which the hydrogen is abstracted is of minor importance.We estimated the average copolymer block length from the amounts of products containing both comonomers as well as from the amounts of trimer composed of the same monomer.     

Absolute fission yields in the fast neutron induced fission of 233U by track etch combined with gamma-ray spectrometry

The absolute fission yields of twenty seven fission products were determined in the fast neutron induced fission of ²³³U, employing track etch in combination with gamma-ray spectrometry. The total number of fissions was measured by registering the fission tracks on a small strip of lexan, a solid state track detector. The fission products were analysed by gamma-ray spectrometry. The measured yield values were compared to the ENDF/B-VI compilation and show a good agreement.

Aziridines $\text{I}$ react with trifluoromethyl hypofluorite at ? 40°C to produce mixtures of 1-(aziridine)carbonyl fluoride $\text{II}$ and 1-fluoroaziridine $\text{III}$, the proportions of which depend on steric effects. Several compounds $\text{II}$ react with starting materials to give 1, 1′-(carbonyl)bisaziridines $\text{IV}$. Most compounds $\text{II}$ and all compounds $\text{IV}$ are isolated. Chemical properties and ir and nmr data of $\text{II}$, $\text{III}$, $\text{IV}$ are described; the formation of an isocyanate and a substituted urea from a compound $\text{II}$ is observed. A mechanism for this reaction is suggested.     

INDUCIBLE POSTREPLICATION REPAIR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MINIMAL MEDIUM RECOVERY IN UV-IRRADIATED Escherichia coliK–12

Abstract— Ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated Escherichia coli K–12 uvrA cells showed higher survival if plated on minimal growth medium rather than on rich growth medium, i.e., they showed minimal medium recovery (MMR). A 2-hour treatment of UV-irradiated cells with rifampicin inhibited the subsequent expression of MMR, and produced a large reduction in survival. We have recently isolated a new mutant ( mmrA1 ) that does not show MMR. The mmrA mutation protected UV-irradiated uvrA cells from the effect of rich growth medium on survival, but not from the effect of rifampicin on survival. DNA daughter-strand gap (DSG) repair in UV-irradiated (4 J/m²) uvrA cells was inhibited to the same degree whether rich growth medium was added immediately after irradiation or after 10 min of postirradiation incubation in minimal growth medium. However, chloramphenicol added immediately after irradiation greatly reduced this repair; there was less reduction if it was added 10 min after UV irradiation. These findings suggest that MMR is an inducible repair phenomenon, and that rich growth medium inhibits this repair process itself rather than its induction.     

Preparation and Crystal Structure Determination of the New Intermetallic Compound RbGa3

The compound has tetragonal symmetry, space group I4 m2 with: a=b=6.315(2) and c = 15.000(2) Å and contains 6 formula units. Diffraction data with 0 < 2θ < 50° (MoKα radiation) were collected on a Nonius CAD-4 automatic diffractometer within the octant hkl. The structure was solved by Patterson synthesis and refined by full-matrix least squares to a final R(F) of 4.9% for 159 independent reflections with I > 3σ(I). The structure consists of a stacking of gallium triangular-faced dodecahedra linked to each others through direct and bifurcated Ga? Ga bonds in a non-compact netting leaving room for a sublattice of rubidium atoms with shortened Rb? Rb distances.
