Spectrally shaped steady noise is commonly used as a masker of speech. The effects of inherent random fluctuations in amplitude of such a noise are typically ignored. Here, the importance of these random fluctuations was assessed by comparing two cases. For one, speech was mixed with steady speech-shaped noise and N-channel tone vocoded, a process referred to as signal-domain mixing (SDM); this preserved the random fluctuations of the noise. For the second, the envelope of speech alone was extracted for each vocoder channel and a constant was added corresponding to the root-mean-square value of the noise envelope for that channel. This is referred to as envelope-domain mixing (EDM); it removed the random fluctuations of the noise. Sinusoidally modulated noise and a single talker were also used as backgrounds, with both SDM and EDM. Speech intelligibility was measured for N?=?12, 19, and 30, with the target-to-background ratio fixed at -7 dB. For SDM, performance was best for the speech background and worst for the steady noise. For EDM, this pattern was reversed. Intelligibility with steady noise was consistently very poor for SDM, but near-ceiling for EDM, demonstrating that the random fluctuations in steady noise have a large effect.  相似文献

Within an auditory channel, the speech waveform contains both temporal envelope (E(O)) and temporal fine structure (TFS) information. Vocoder processing extracts a modified version of the temporal envelope (E') within each channel and uses it to modulate a channel carrier. The resulting signal, E'(Carr), has reduced information content compared to the original "E(O)?+ TFS" signal. The dynamic range over which listeners make additional use of E(O)?+ TFS over E'(Carr) cues was investigated in a competing-speech task. The target-and-background mixture was processed using a 30-channel vocoder. In each channel, E(O)?+ TFS replaced E'(Carr) at either the peaks or the valleys of the signal. The replacement decision was based on comparing the short-term channel level to a parametrically varied "switching threshold," expressed relative to the long-term channel level. Intelligibility was measured as a function of switching threshold, carrier type, target-to-background ratio, and replacement method. Scores showed a dependence on all four parameters. Derived intensity-importance functions (IIFs) showed that E(O)?+ TFS information from 8-13 dB below to 10 dB above the channel long-term level was important. When E(O)?+ TFS information was added at the peaks, IIFs peaked around -2 dB, but when E(O)?+ TFS information was added at the valleys, the peaks lay around +1 dB.  相似文献

The film mode matching method was used to analyze the inter waveguide coupling losses in a passive asymmetric twin waveguide caused by waveguide width and refractive index variation for both resonant and adiabatic coupling at a wavelength of 1,550 nm. The reasons for power losses are shown. It is demonstrated that tapering the mode beating section of the resonant coupler can increase the fabrication tolerance of resonant coupling without increasing the coupling length.  相似文献

Psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) were measured for sinusoidal signals with frequency f(s)?= 31.5, 40, 50, 63, and 80 Hz, using sinusoidal and narrowband-noise maskers. For the former, conditions were included where a pair of beating tones was added to reduce the use of cues related to beats. Estimates of each subject's middle-ear transfer function (METF) were obtained from equal-loudness contours measured from 20 to 160 Hz. With decreasing f(s), the PTCs became progressively broadened and markedly asymmetrical, with shallow upper skirts and steep lower skirts. For the sinusoidal maskers, the tips were more irregular than for narrowband-noise maskers or when beating tones were added. For f(s)?= 31.5 and 40 Hz, the tips of the PTCs always fell above f(s). Allowing for the METF so as to infer underlying filter shapes resulted in flatter lower skirts, especially below 40 Hz, and reduced the frequency at the tips for f(s) between 31.5 and 50 Hz; however, the tips did not fall below 40 to 50 Hz. The bandwidths of the PTCs increased with decreasing f(s) below 80 Hz. However, bandwidths remained roughly constant if the METF was included as part of auditory filtering for frequencies below 40 Hz.  相似文献

Background  

Although previous studies suggest that postural control requires attention and other cognitive resources, the central mechanisms responsible for this relationship remain unclear. To address this issue, we examined the effects of altered attention on cortical activity and postural responses following mechanical perturbations to upright stance. We hypothesized that cortical activity would be attenuated but not delayed when mechanical perturbations were applied during a concurrent performance of a cognitive task (i.e. when attention was directed away from the perturbation). We also hypothesized that these cortical changes would be accompanied by alterations in the postural response, as evidenced by increases in the magnitude of anteroposterior (AP) centre of pressure (COP) peak displacements and tibialis anterior (TA) muscle activity. Healthy young adults (n = 7) were instructed to continuously track (cognitive task) or not track (control task) a randomly moving visual target using a hand-held joystick. During each of these conditions, unpredictable translations of a moving floor evoked cortical and postural responses. Scalp-recorded cortical activity, COP, and TA electromyographic (EMG) measures were collected.  相似文献

A noninterferometric optical fiber add-drop channel filter based on a mismatched twin-core photosensitive-cladding fiber and long-period fiber grating is demonstrated. Imaging of micro- and nanofluidics is a challenge since the size of the channels is so small that the installment of additional optical and mechanical switches is very difficult. The size of the device and associated increase in viscous dissipation constitute another constraint. In response to these limitations, this work proposes and demonstrates the manipulation of light by adding a functional lens to control the light on demand. In the present work, this lens is realized by filling a hollow fiber with a colloid of superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles. When the propagation of light is perpendicular to the magnetic field, this lens stretches the circular beam into a ribbon yielding a larger visible area. Potentially, one can apply a rotating magnetic field thus illuminating a larger spot size or creating other beam geometries. Such composite fibers might also be of value for Faraday isolation and other magneto-optic effects in optical fibers.  相似文献

Experimental Raman and FT‐IR spectra of solid‐state non‐deuterated and N‐deuterated samples of cyclo(L ‐Met‐L ‐Met) are reported and discussed. The Raman and FT‐IR results show characteristic amide I vibrations (Raman: 1649 cm−1, infrared: 1675 cm−1) for molecules exhibiting a cis amide conformation. A Raman band, assigned to the cis amide II vibrational mode, is observed at ∼1493 cm−1 but no IR band is observed in this region. Cyclo(L ‐Met‐L ‐Met) crystallises in the triclinic space group P1 with one molecule per unit cell. The overall shape of the diketopiperazine (DKP) ring displays a (slightly distorted) boat conformation. The crystal packing employs two strong hydrogen bonds, which traverse the entire crystal via translational repeats. B3‐LYP/cc‐pVDZ calculations of the structure of the molecule predict a boat conformation for the DKP ring, in agreement with the experimentally determined X‐ray structure. Nanocrystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films have been deposited by spin-coating polymeric precursors synthesized by the citrate precursor route using ethylene glycol and citric acid as chelating agents. The ZnO thin films were annealed in air at different temperatures for 10 min. The films were characterized by different structural and optical techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), optical transmission spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL). The thermal decomposition of polymeric precursor was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). XRD analysis with grazing incidence and rocking curves indicate that the ZnO films are polycrystalline with preferential orientation along the c-axis direction with a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 0.31° for 600 °C-annealed samples. On annealing, the texturing in films increased along with a decrease in FWHM. AFM micrographs illustrate that the ZnO films are crack-free with well-dispersed homogeneous and uniformly distributed spherical morphology. The synthesized ZnO thin films have transparency >85% in the visible region exhibiting band edge at 375 nm, which becomes sharper with anneal. Room temperature PL spectra of these films show strong ultraviolet (UV) emission around 392 nm with an increase in intensity with annealing temperature, attributed to grain growth. Deconvolution of the PL spectra reveals that there is coupling of free excitons with higher orders of longitudinal optical (LO) phonon replicas leading to a broad asymmetric near-band-edge peak.  相似文献

Neutral spin texture (ST) excitations at nu=1/3 are directly observed for the first time by resonant inelastic light scattering. They are determined to involve two simultaneous spin flips. At low magnetic fields, the ST energy is below that of the magnetoroton minimum. With increasing in-plane magnetic field these mode energies cross at a critical ratio of the Zeeman and Coulomb energies of eta(c)=0.020+/-0.001. Surprisingly, the intensity of the ST mode grows with temperature in the range in which the magnetoroton modes collapse. The temperature dependence is interpreted in terms of a competition between coexisting phases supporting different excitations. We consider the role of the ST excitations in activated transport at nu=1/3.  相似文献
