The influence of different amounts of anionic copolymers of N-Methyl N-vinyl acetamide (NMVA) and acrylic acid with various charge densities on the formation of the lamellar liquid crystal formed by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/decanol/water was investigated by means of polarization microscopy, small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy and rheology. A model is presented to provide quantitative measures to estimate the trends of the change in the penetration of the added component into the polar part of the amphiphile layer in lamellar liquid crystals of water and ethoxylated surfactants with added water (or polar solvents). The total thickness of the bi‐layer is treated as composed of an aqueous layer, of a layer of the polar groups from the surfactant and of the hydrocarbon chains of the latter. A fraction α of the added water is assumed penetrating the polar group layer leading to its expansion. The evaluation is built on the fact that experimental determinations of the interlayer spacing in the overwhelming majority of cases show a first order linear dependence on the ratio of added water. In the model this linearity is obtained by variation of the degree of penetration of water. The model indicated a reduction in the degree of penetration with added water, which is a rational trend. The model demonstrates the earlier interpretation of a structure, whose interlayer spacing is invariant with water contents as nonswelling; for example, in which all added water penetrates the amhiphile layer, is not appropriate. The model demonstrates the constancy of the interlayer spacing to be a consequence of a balance between the expansion of the amphiphile layer and the increase of a “free water” layer.  相似文献

The system water–benzene–ethanol was used to illustrate the complexity of spontaneous emulsification, when water-poor emulsions are brought in contact with water. In the first case, an O/W emulsion located close to the plait point in the system was used. The aqueous phase in the emulsion was incompatible with water, and a strong spontaneous emulsification to an O/W between the two liquids took place in the water layer close to the interface between layers. In the second case, a W/O emulsion, also close to the plait point, was brought in contact with water. Now, the spontaneous emulsification between the water and the oil phase of the original emulsion to an O/W emulsion also took place in the water layer forming a distinct emulsion layer beneath the interface.  相似文献

Formulations with lyotropic liquid crystals were prepared from a Brazilian nut vegetable oil, guarana extract and combination of sorbitan monooleate (Span 80) and sorbitan monolaurate ethoxylate EO 20 (Tween 20) in the ratio 1:3 (surfactant component) and their physical–chemical aspects and rheological properties were determined. Compositions with liquid crystals were found in the pseudoternary diagram in a surfactant range of 70–90% and polarized light microscopy, small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) showed them to be lamellar. The preparations were furthermore characterized rheologically by shear stress shear rate sweeps finding plastic and pseudoplastic behavior without thixotropy. Electric conductivity and pH measurements demonstrated a potential for future application as dermatological delivery system of the active compounds in the Bertholletia excelsa and Paullinia cupana.   相似文献

A vegetable oil (VO) was added to an emulsion of silicone oil in water (SO/W) with mixing limited to once turning the test tube upside down. Initially, the VO was dispersed into virtually centimeter-sized drops and the emulsion contained effectively no Janus drops, while after 1 h of agitation at a low level to prevent creaming, drops of 50–100-μm size of the two oils were observed: in addition to an insignificant number of Janus drops. The topology of the latter showed them to emanate from flocculated individual drops of the two oils, but with no discernible effect by the interfacial tension equilibrium on the drop topology. Continued gentle mixing gave increasing fraction of Janus drops of increased size with a topology gradually approaching the one expected from the interfacial equilibrium at the contact line. The spontaneous formation of Janus drops indicated a reduction of the interfacial free energy in the process and the interfacial energy difference between separate and Janus drops was calculated for an appropriate range of interfacial tensions and for all oil fractions. The calculations enabled a distinction of the decrease due to interfacial area changes from the reduction of interfacial tensions per se, with the latter only a minor fraction. Figure

Summary Phase equilibria in systems of water/p-xylene/amines have been investigated. The results show that the polar interactions giving rise to molecular complexes in liquids and solids do not have the same structural influence in the liquid crystalline phase.Regarding this the opinion that molecular complexes act as stabilizers for emulsions and foams is criticized. The basic stabilizing element is rather a liquid crystalline phase at the interface and consequently definite molecular ratios of surfactants do not have a decisive effect on the stability. The more general interaction of the stabilizer with both the aqueous and with the nonpolar phase is pointed out.  相似文献

We report spectroscopic evidence for the pressure-induced structural changes in B2O3 glass quenched from melts at pressures up to 6 GPa using solid-state NMR. While all borons are tri-coordinated at 1 atm, the fraction of tetra-coordinated boron increases with pressure, being about 5% and 27% in the B2O3 glass quenched from melts at 2 and 6 GPa, respectively. The fraction of boroxol ring species increases with pressure up to 2 GPa and apparently decreases with further compression up to 6 GPa. Two densification mechanisms are proposed to explain the variation of boron species with pressure.  相似文献

We study the magneto-optic (MO) Faraday rotation in a two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal with a central MO defect layer in the optical wavelength range. We show that when a TM plane wave is incident upon a photonic crystal, an enhancement of Faraday rotation takes place in a region where a resonance peak appears in the photonic bandgap. A microfluidic flow injection (microFIA) system was employed for handling and monitoring of cell-released products from living cells immobilised on silicon microchips. The dynamic release of glucose and ethanol produced from sucrose by immobilised Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells was determined using microchip biosensors (micro-biosensors) with either co-immobilised glucose oxidase-horseradish peroxidase (GOX-HRP), or alcohol oxidase-horseradish peroxidase (AOX-HRP), catalysing a series of reactions ending up with chemiluminescence (CL) generated from HRP-catalysed oxidation of luminol in presence of p-iodophenol (PIP). The yeast cells were attached by first treating them with polyethylenimine (PEI) followed by adsorption to the microchip surface. The cell loss during assaying was evaluated qualitatively using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), showing that no cells were lost after 35 min liquid handling of the cell chip at 10 microl min(-1). The enzymes were immobilised on microchips via PEI-treatment followed by glutaraldehyde (GA) activation. The GOX-HRP micro-biosensors could be used during five days without any noticeable decrease in response, while the AOX-HRP micro-biosensors showed continuously decreasing activity, but could still be used employing calibration correction. The glucose and ethanol released from the immobilised yeast chips were quantitatively monitored, by varying the incubation time with sucrose, showing the possibilities and advantages of using a microfluidic system set-up for cell-based assays.  相似文献
