Complexation Properties of Typical Soil and Peat Humic Acids with Copper(II) and Cadmium(II)

Abstract

Potentiometric titration with ion-selective electrodes was applied to determine characteristic parameters like the degree of complexation and the approximate molecular weight of humic acids from theoretical considerations and conditional stability constants for the complexes of Cu(II) and Cd(II) with humic acids obtained from sources such as garden soil, peat prepared by decomposing water hyacinth in soil and humified water hyacinth. Double-reciprocal and Scatchard plots were constructed to determine the conditional stability constants of the complexes formed. Cu(II) was found to have more affinity for the humic acids than Cd(II) and the stability of the metal complexes in aqueous medium was found to increase with increasing pH. The order of stability of the complexes was M-HA (soil)>M-HA (peat)>M-HA (humified water hyacinth), where M and HA represent metal and humic acids, respectively.     

Synthesis,characterization and fluorescence properties of hexanuclear zinc(II) complexes

Two hexanuclear zinc(II) complexes, [Zn₆(L¹)₂(μ₂-OH)₂(μ₂-CH₃COO)₈] · CH₃CN (1 · CH₃CN) and [Zn₆(L²)₂(μ₂-OH)₂(μ₂-CH₃COO)₈] · 4CH₃CN (2 · 4CH₃CN), where HL¹ = 4-methyl-2,6-bis(cyclohexylmethyliminomethyl)-phenol and HL² = 4-methyl-2,6-bis(1-naphthalylmethyliminomethyl)-phenol, have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR and fluorescence spectroscopic methods, and by X-ray diffraction analysis. In the asymmetric unit of complex 1, two of the three zinc atoms have pentacoordinate geometries and the other is tetrahedrally coordinated, whereas the three distinct Zn atoms in complex 2 adopt three different coordination environments, namely distorted octahedral, trigonal bipyramidal and tetrahedral. The fluorescence properties of the ligands and complexes have been investigated.     

DBSA mediated chemoselective synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazoles in aqueous media

An efficient synthetic method has been developed for the facile synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazoles in organized aqueous media in the presence of a surfactant (viz. DBSA) as catalyst and I₂ as co-catalyst. The method described has the advantages of operational simplicity, excellent yields, high chemoselectivity, and clean and green reaction profile.     

Room temperature solution studies of complexation between o-chloranil and a series of anilines by spectrophotometric method.

Electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex formation between o-chloranil and a series of anilines has been studied in CCl4 medium. In all the cases, EDA complexes are formed instantaneously on mixing the donor and acceptor solutions. N,N-dimethylaniline and N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine form stable EDA complexes with o-chloranil while the other complexes decay slowly into secondary products. The kinetics of all these reactions has been studied by UV-VIS absorption spectrophotometric method and the rate constants of the reactions and formation constants of the EDA complexes have been determined. The charge transfer (CT) transition energies of the complexes are found to change systematically with change in the number and position of the methyl groups in the donor molecules (methylanilines). From an analysis of this variation, the electron affinity of o-chloranil has been found to be 2.54 eV. A perturbational inductive effect Hückel parameter hMe has been found from this trend and the value obtained (-0.27) is very close to that (-0.3) obtained by Lepley (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 86 (1964) 2545) from a study of tetracyano ethylene (TCNE)-methylbenzene complexes.
