Brønsted acid catalyzed synthesis of 2-aryl-quinazolinones via cyclization of 2-aminobenzamide with benzonitriles in PEG

A simple and efficient Brønsted acid catalyzed synthesis of 2-aryl-quinazolinones via cyclization of 2-aminobenzamides with benzonitrile in PEG under metal and ligand-free condition. All substituted benzonitriles were also well participated with the formation of the corresponding products in moderate to good yields.

The credit risk+ model with general sector correlations

We consider an enhancement of the credit risk⁺ model to incorporate correlations between sectors. We model the sector default rates as linear combinations of a common set of independent variables that represent macro-economic variables or risk factors. We also derive the formula for exact VaR contributions at the obligor level.     

Time and distance constraints on accelerating cosmological models

The absence of guidance from fundamental physics about the mechanism behind cosmic acceleration has given rise to a number of alternative cosmological scenarios. These are based either on modifications of general relativistic gravitation theory on large scales or on the existence of new fields in Nature. In this Letter we investigate the observational viability of some accelerating cosmological models in light of 32 age measurements of passively evolving galaxies as a function of redshift and recent estimates of the product of the cosmic microwave background acoustic scale and the baryonic acoustic oscillation peak scale. By using information-criteria model selection, we select the best-fit models and rank the alternative scenarios. We show that some of these models may provide a better fit to the data than does the current standard cosmological constant dominated (ΛCDM) model.     

Hybrid mesh generation with embedded surfaces using a multiple marching direction approach

This paper proposes a method for the creation of hybrid meshes with embedded surfaces for viscous flow simulations as an extension of the multiple marching direction approach (AIAA J. 2007; 45 (1):162–167). The multiple marching direction approach enables to place semi‐structured elements around singular points, where valid semi‐structured elements cannot be placed using conventional hybrid mesh generation methods. This feature is discussed first with a couple of examples. Elements sometimes need to be clustered inside a computational domain to obtain more accurate results. For example, solution features, such as shocks, vortex cores and wake regions, can be extracted during the process of adaptive mesh generation. These features can be represented as surface meshes embedded in a computational domain. Semi‐structured elements can be placed around the embedded surface meshes using the multiple marching direction approach with a pretreatment method. Tetrahedral elements can be placed easily instead. A couple of results are presented to demonstrate the capability of the mesh generation method. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Synthesis and antimicrobial activities of sulfonohydrazide‐substituted 8‐hydroxyquinoline derivative and its oxinates

Looking at the pharmacological importance of 8‐hydroxyquinolines and sulfonamides, in the present study, a novel bi‐dentate ligand 4‐amino‐N′‐[(8‐hydroxyquinoline‐5‐yl)methyl] benzenesulfonohydrazide (AHQMBSH) having above both moieties within a single molecular framework was synthesized by the reaction of N‐acetamidobenzene sulfonohydrazide with 5‐chloromethyl‐8‐hydroxyquinoline hydrochloride. Its metal(II) oxinates were also prepared with Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) salts. All the above compounds were investigated by physicochemical analyses, thermogravimetric analysis and spectroscopic techniques. Antimicrobial activities for the above prepared compounds were carried out using the agar‐plate method against various strains of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtillis, Pseudomonas aerugionsa, Escherichia coli) and fungi (Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavous). The results show a significant increase in antimicrobial and antifungal activities of AHQMBSH compared with the parent 8‐hydroxyquinoline and sulfonamides.
