Syntheses and DNA photocleavage by mono- and bis-phenothiazinium-piperazinexylene intercalators

Chromophore systems consisting of one (compound 5) or two (compound 6) phenothiazine rings covalently attached to a bis-piperazinexylene chain were synthesized and evaluated as DNA photocleaving agents. In the presence of DNA, the compounds were shown to monointercalate in their deaggregated forms and to strongly absorb red wavelengths of light. Reactions containing micromolar concentrations of compound produced robust photocleavage of plasmid DNA under near-physiological conditions of temperature and pH (22 °C and pH 7.0). Phenothiazines 5 and 6 increased the T_m of calf thymus DNA by 17 and 19 °C, indicating that significant levels of duplex stabilization were produced.     

Using ionic liquids to trap unique coordination environments: polymorphic solvates of ErCl3(OH2)(4).2([C2mim]Cl)

Two polymorphs of ErCl(3)(OH(2))(4).2([C(2)mim]Cl) solvates were isolated from the same solution of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride when HCl(aq) was added, while [C(2)mim](3)[ErCl(6)] was isolated without HCl addition, illustrating how ionic liquids can be used to trap unusual coordination environments in the solid state.     

N-substituted salicylaldimine complexes of rhodium(III) and related rhodium(III) organometallic derivatives

A series of new Rh^III complexes with N-substituted salicylaldimines have been prepared of the form [RhSBPy₂]PF₆ where SB is a tetradentate N,N′-substituted bis(salicylaldimine) or represents two molecules of a corresponding bidentate derivative. Several of these complexes have been reduced with 0.5% sodium amalgam and the products reacted with CH₃I to yield the organometallic derivatives CH₃RhSBPy.     

Puroindoline-a, a lipid binding protein from common wheat, spontaneously forms prolate protein micelles in solution

The self-assembly in solution of puroindoline-a (Pin-a), an amphiphilic lipid binding protein from common wheat, was investigated by small angle neutron scattering, dynamic light scattering and size exclusion chromatography. Pin-a was found to form monodisperse prolate ellipsoidal micelles with a major axial radius of 112 ± 4.5 ? and minor axial radius of 40.4 ± 0.18 ?. These protein micelles were formed by the spontaneous self-assembly of 38 Pin-a molecules in solution and were stable over a wide pH range (3.5-11) and at elevated temperatures (20-65 °C). Pin-a micelles could be disrupted upon addition of the non-ionic surfactant dodecyl-β-maltoside, suggesting that the protein self-assembly is driven by hydrophobic forces, consisting of intermolecular interactions between Trp residues located within a well-defined Trp-rich domain of Pin-a.     

Preparation and characterization of molecularly imprinted electropolymerized carbon electrodes

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) selective for fluorescein, rhodamine or 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) were electropolymerized onto graphite electrodes using an aqueous solution equimolar in resorsinol/ortho-phenylenediamine and in the presence of the template molecule. For the dyes, the MIP-coated electrodes showed higher affinity for their template molecule than for a non-template dye. The 2,4-D-MIP-coated electrode showed a concentration dependent response for 2,4-D as compared to the polymer-coated electrode prepared in the absence of template molecule.     

Synthesis of exo enol ether-cyclic ketal isomers of substituted furanmethanol structures related to marine furanocembranoids

Oxidations of the 2-alkenylfurans 8a and 8b, using peroxy reagents, lead to the dienedione 9 and the furan epoxide 10, respectively. Treatment of the epoxide 10 with p-TSA in MeOH produces the enol ether cyclic ketal 12, which is rapidly isomerised to the furanmethanol ether 15, isolated in 80% yield. By contrast, when the propanol-substituted furan epoxide 23 was kept in CDCl₃ containing traces of HCl for 2 h, a 3:2 mixture of Z- and E-isomers of the enol ether spiro ketals 25a and 25b was produced in >92% yield; after 24 h this mixture of isomers underwent dehydration leading to the corresponding enol ether triene 26 (70%). When a solution of the dienedione 9 in H₂O-THF containing p-TSA was stirred at 25 °C for 20 h, the tertiary alcohol 27 was produced which, after a further 20 h was converted into the furan vicinal diol 29. Likewise, when the ‘cembranoid’ dienedione 31 was treated with p-TSA-H₂O, the hydroxymethyl-substituted furanobutenolide 33 was produced in 40% yield. It is probable that the enol ether cyclic hemiketals 28 and 32/34, which are related to 12 and 25, and also to the naturally occurring cembranoids 1 and 2 found in corals, are transient intermediates in the conversions leading to 29 and 33 from 9 and 31, respectively.     

Catalytic ignition of ionic liquids for propellant applications

In this proof of concept study, the ionic liquids, 2-hydroxyethylhydrazinium nitrate and 2-hydroxyethylhydrazinium dinitrate, ignited on contact with preheated Shell 405 (iridium supported on alumina) catalyst and energetically decomposed with no additional ignition source, suggesting a possible route to hydrazine replacements.     

Tri‐Chain Hydrocarbon Surfactants as Designed Micellar Modifiers for Supercritical CO2
