Investigation of multicomponent fluoride optical materials in the UV spectral region: I. Single crystals of Ca1−x R xF2+x (R = Sc, Y, La, Yb, Lu) solid solutions

Crystalline materials that are transparent in the vacuum UV spectral region and currently used have been reviewed. Transmission of crystals of solid solutions with the fluorite structure Ca_1?x R _xF_2+x (R = Sc, Y, La, Yb, Lu) in the UV and vacuum UV spectral regions has been investigated. It is shown that application of different methods of purification of fluorides from some impurities can significantly improve the optical quality of fluoride multicomponent crystals in the short-wavelength spectral region.

On the non existence of monotone linear schema for some linear parabolic equations

In this Note, we present a result concerning the non existence of linear monotone schema with fixed stencil on regular meshes for some linear parabolic equation in two dimensions. The parabolic equations of interest arise from non isotropic diffusion modelling. A corollary is that no linear monotone 9 points-schemes can be designed for the one-dimensional heat equation emerged in the plane with an arbitrary direction of diffusion. Some applications of this result are provided: for the Fokker–Planck–Lorentz model for electrons in the context of plasma physics; all linear monotone scheme for the one-dimensional hyperbolic heat equation treated as a two-dimensional problem are not consistent in the diffusion limit for an arbitrary direction of propagation. Calculation of diatomic molecules with the lctoc method. Excited states of some homonuclear molecules and ions

Calculations are performed, using a basis of two-center functions described previously, for excited states of the following three-and four-electron compounds: H₂ ^–, He₂ ⁺, He₂, Li₂ ⁺². High efficiency is demonstrated for the frozen ionic core approximation and the nonorthogonal orbital method in such calculations. Isometric Isomorphisms Between Banach Algebras Related to a Certain Class of Clifford Topological Semigroups

In the present paper it is shown that if S₁ and S₂ are two Clifford topological semigroups satisfying certain conditions and T is an isometric isomorphism of LUC(S₁*) onto LUC(S₂*), then T maps S₁ topologically isomorphically onto S₂. Furthermore, T maps M ^l _n(S₁) (M(S₁), respectively) isometrically isomorphically onto M ^l _n(S₂) (M(S₂), respectively). Indeed, we have obtained a generalization of a well-known result of Ghahramani, Lau and Losert for locally compact groups to a more general setting of Clifford topological semigroups.     

Un principe d'invariance relatif à un processus généralisant le mouvement brownien N-dimensionnel

We prove that the generalized random walks associated to a root system R in $\text{R}{}^{\mathrm{N}}$ and a nonnegative multiplicity function k defined on R, converge in distribution (if suitably normalized) to a Markov process with càdlàg trajectories and infinitesimal generator a differential-difference operator on $\text{R}{}^{\mathrm{N}}$ which generalizes the usual Laplacian. Effect of the structure of smooth copper surfaces on the accuracy of determination of the optical constants of copper

The accuracy of determination of the optical constants of smooth copper surfaces produced by different technologies is analyzed, with particular attention paid to the consideration of the influence of scattered radiation (which is ignored by many authors) on the retrieval of the optical constants of copper surfaces from reflected radiation. The neglect of scattered radiation can lead to errors as high as 50% in determining the optical constants for bulk copper. For thin films, the errors are much lower. The influence of surface oxidation during measurements in air and surface features of studied objects on the parameters to be determined is analyzed as well. It is shown that errors in determination of the constants are maximal in the plasma resonance region of copper.

     

Monotone Nonincreasing Random Fields on Partially Ordered Sets. I

For an arbitrary poset H and measure ρ on H × _R (where _R is the real axis), we construct a monotone decreasing stochastic field η_ρ and compute its finite-dimensional distributions. In the case where H is a Λ-semilattice and the measure ρ satisfies additional conditions, we compute various characteristics of the field η_ρ such as the expectation of the field value at a point, variance of the field value at a point, and correlation function of the field. The described construction of random fields gives a new method for constructing positive definite functions on posets. Experiences in Expert Systems

This paper describes some work carried out in the Scientific Research and Development Branch (SRDB) of the Home Office, intended to contribute to an overall aim of building up internal expertise in the field of expert systems. This was done by carrying out a number of pilot and demonstrator projects, two of which are described in some detail. The plan, which proved successful, was to build as far as possible on the relevant skills already possessed by an OR group in the branch. The lessons learned from these are summarized in the hope that they will be of use to other groups who wish to become involved in this important area.
