Magnetic fluid poly(ethylene glycol) with moderate anticancer activity

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-containing magnetic fluids - magnetite (Fe₃O₄) stabilized by sodium oleate - were prepared. Magnetic measurements confirmed superparamagnetic behaviour at room temperature. The structure of that kind of magnetic fluid was characterized using different techniques, including electron microscopy, photon cross correlation spectroscopy and small-angle neutron scattering, while the adsorption of PEG on magnetic particles was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. From the in vitro toxicity tests it was found that a magnetic fluid containing PEG (MFPEG) partially inhibited the growth of cancerous B16 cells at the highest tested dose (2.1 mg/ml of Fe₃O₄ in MFPEG).     

Selective preparation of (E)-3-oxo-1-alkenylphosphonates by insertion of acyl chlorides and nitriles into zirconacycles

Zirconacycles 1, obtained from diethyl 1-alkynylphosphonates, insert either acyl chlorides or nitriles to provide, after acidic workup, (E)-3-oxo-1-alkenylphosphonates, 2, in isolated yields of 55-83%. Insertion produces only one regio- and stereoisomer. The reaction is quite general and proceeds well with both aliphatic and aromatic acyl chlorides. Acetonitrile and p-methoxybenzonitrile also inserted efficiently. Insertion of isobutyl chloroformate produced the vinylphosphonocarboxylate, 2c, the first representative of this class of compounds.     

The dependence of the conduction band edge of the alkali earth metal bismuthates on their composition

We present a comparative analysis of the conduction band edge of the alkali earth metal bismuthates containing Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba. The conduction band edges were computed using the method suggested by Butler and Ginley. The calculations reveal that they depend on the bismuthate’s composition and vary over a wide range. We demonstrate that the energy of the conduction band increases in the series Ca?→?Sr?→?Ba. It also increases with an increase of the alkali earth metal content. The performed calculations help to determine the potential alkali earth metal bismuthate photocatalysts. The most promising compositions found in this study include strontium and barium bismuthates in which the number of the alkali earth metal atoms in the cationic sublattice exceeds the number of the bismuth atoms.     

Polymorphism of hydrogen bonding in the short double helixes of oligonucleotides: Semiempirical quantum chemical study

The origin of heterogeneity of nucleotide steps geometry in short double helixes is studied theoretically. By using the semiempirical MNDO/PM3 technique, the stability of “propeller‐like” and “step‐like” forms of base H‐pairing is examined in the structure of oligonucleotide duplexes of different types. The influence of end effects on the process of nucleotides packing, as well as the dependence of duplex curvature on the nature of bonded oligonucleotides, are examined. It is concluded that the structural polymorphism of base pairs most likely determines the unique packing of complementary pairs and their flexibility in DNA structure. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of new secondary phosphine chalcogenides with bulky substituents from aryl(hetaryl)ethenes,red phosphorus,sulfur, and selenium

Phosphine generated along with hydrogen from red phosphorus and aqueous potassium hydroxide selectively reacts with aryl(hetaryl)ethenes (α-methylstyrene, 2-vinylnaphthalene and 5-vinyl-2-methylpyridine) in superbasic system KOH-DMSO(H₂O) to give secondary phosphines. The latter are practically quantitatively oxidized by elemental sulfur or selenium (20–25°C, toluene, 0.5 h), to afford the hitherto unknown secondary phosphine chalcogenides with bulky arylalkyl pyridine and naphthyl substituents.

The first example of stereoselective self-assembly of a cryptand containing four asymmetric intracyclic phosphane groups

The rac stereoisomer of a novel cryptand containing two bridgehead nitrogen and four asymmetric phosphorus atoms in the 16-membered core cycle was obtained stereoselectively via the reaction of bis(mesitylphosphino)propane, formaldehyde, and meta-xylylenediamine in the course of a covalent self-assembly process.
