Lead dioxide has been used for over a century in the lead-acid battery. Many fundamental questions concerning PbO2 remain unanswered, principally: (i) is the bulk material a metal or a semiconductor, and (ii) what is the source of the high levels of conductivity? We calculate the electronic structure and defect physics of PbO2, using a hybrid density functional, and show that it is an n-type semiconductor with a small indirect band gap of ~0.2 eV. The origin of electron carriers in the undoped material is found to be oxygen vacancies, which forms a donor state resonant in the conduction band. A dipole-forbidden band gap combined with a large carrier induced Moss-Burstein shift results in a large effective optical band gap. The model is supported by neutron diffraction, which reveals that the oxygen sublattice is only 98.4% occupied, thus confirming oxygen substoichiometry as the electron source.  相似文献

The high resolution depth profiling capabilities of medium energy ion scattering are employed to determine the depth dependent composition of Au/Pd nanoparticles grown on thin silica films on Si(100) as functions of Au/Pd composition, total metal loading and annealing temperature. We show that, despite the fact that Au is deposited prior to Pd, the surface of the particles is generally enriched in Au compared to the bulk composition. The extent of this Au enrichment decreases with annealing temperature. In addition, we examine the influence of the adsorption of acetic acid on the surface composition of Au/Pd particles grown on thin alumina films on NiAl(110). We find that acetic acid causes limited segregation of Pd to the bimetallic surface of relatively Au-rich particles.  相似文献

The present molecular dynamics study is an investigation of the temperature (T) dependence of liquid hexane coarse-grained potentials optimized with the Iterative Boltzmann Inversion method. An approach for the derivation of coarse-grained potentials at temperatures T different from the optimization temperature T(0) has recently been proposed for ethylbenzene. This method is based on the use of a T-dependent scaling factor f(T) to generate ethylbenzene potentials at T≠T(0). The approach is here extended to hexane, considering different reference temperatures T(0) and functional forms for f(T). From our simulations, it appears that the accuracy of the temperature transferability depends simultaneously on the T(0) chosen and the analytic form of f(T). Such a behavior is suppressed by the use of a new 2-point interpolation formula to generate coarse-grained potentials as a function of T. This scheme employs a linear interpolation based on the optimization of coarse-grained potentials at two reference temperatures, T(L) and T(U), with T(L)≤T≤T(U). Accurate coarse-grained simulations of liquid hexane can be performed using the new interpolation scheme. The results are encouraging for the use of potential interpolations as a practical means for devising coarse-grained potentials within a wider temperature range.  相似文献

Several important aspects of fluorescence decay analysis are addressed and tested against new experimental measurements. A simulated-annealing method is described for deconvoluting the instrument response function from a measured fluorescence decay to yield the true decay, which is more convenient for subsequent fitting. The method is shown to perform well against the conventional approach, which is to fit a convoluted fitting function to the experimentally measured decay. The simulated annealing approach is also successfully applied to the determination of an instrument response function using a known true fluorescence decay (for rhodamine 6G). The analysis of true fluorescence decays is considered critically, focusing specifically on how a distribution of decay constants can be incorporated in to a fit. Various fitting functions are applied to the true fluorescence decays of 2-aminopurine in water-dioxane mixtures, in a dinucleotide, and in DNA duplexes. It is shown how a suitable combination of exponential decays and non-exponential decays (based on a Γ distribution of decay constants) can provide fits of equal quality to the conventional multi-exponential fits used in the majority of previous studies, but with fewer fitting parameters. Crucially, the new approach yields decay-constant distributions that are physically more meaningful than those corresponding to the conventional multi-exponential fit. The methods presented here should find wider application, for example to the analysis of transient-current or optical decays and in F?rster resonance energy transfer (FRET).  相似文献

The discovery of a 125.5 GeV Higgs with standard model-like couplings and naturalness considerations motivate gauge extensions of the MSSM. We analyse two variants of such an extension and carry out a phenomenological study of regions of the parameter space satisfying current direct and indirect constraints, employing state-of-the-art two-loop RGE evolution and GMSB boundary conditions. We find that due to the appearance of non-decoupled D-terms it is possible to obtain a 125.5 GeV Higgs with stops below 2 TeV, while the uncoloured sparticles could still lie within reach of the LHC. We compare the contributions of the stop sector and the non-decoupled D-terms to the Higgs mass, and study their effect on the Higgs couplings. We further investigate the nature of the next-to lightest supersymmetric particle, in light of the GMSB motivated searches currently being pursued by ATLAS and CMS.  相似文献

A scanning tunnelling microscopy investigation is reported of the adsorption of methylacetoacetate on Au{111} surfaces templated by the growth of 1-D chains of nickel pyroglutamate. The symmetry of the Au{111}-herringbone reconstruction and the chirality of the pyroglutamate species influence the preferred growth directions of pyroglutamate chains. The interaction of methylacetoacetate with the various chain types reveals details of the symmetry and conformation of the chains. In addition, the docking of methylacetoacetate initiates the growth of ordered domains of methylacetoacetate not observed on either Au{111} or Ni/Au{111} surfaces. The possibilities to utilize such chiral recognition and amplification effects in the design of enantioselective heterogeneous catalysts are discussed.  相似文献

In recent years, much research has focused on the development of low-cost, printed electrochemical sensor platforms for environmental monitoring and clinical diagnostics. Much effort in this area has been based on utilising the redox properties of conducting polymers, particularly polyaniline (PANI). In tackling the inherent lack of processability exhibited by these materials, several groups have examined various mass-amenable fabrication approaches to obtain suitable thin films of PANI for sensing applications. Specifically, the approaches investigated over the years include the in situ chemical synthesis of PANI, the use of sulphonated derivatives of PANI and the synthesis of aqueousbased nano-dispersions of PANI. Nano-dispersions have shown a great deal of promise for sensing applications, given that they are inkjet-printable, facilitating the patterning of conducting polymer directly to the substrate. We have shown that inkjet-printed films of PANI can be finely controlled in terms of their two-dimensional pattern, thickness, and conductivity, highlighting the level of precision achievable by inkjet printing. Utilising these nanomaterials as inkjet-printable inks opens novel, facile, and economical possibilities for conducting polymer-printed electronic applications in areas of sensing, but also many other application areas such as energy storage, displays, organic light-emitting diodes. Given that inkjet-printing is a scalable manufacturing technique, it renders possible the large-scale production of devices such as sensors for a range of applications. Several successes have emerged from our work and from the work of others in the area of applying PANI in low-cost sensor applications, which is the focus of this review.  相似文献

We demonstrate aqueous hydrogel-based microcontact printing of amine ligands into solvent-templated nanocavities of chloromethylphenyl-based siloxane or thin polymer films. Migration of pyridine ligands within films following printing, which can compromise pattern fidelity, is eliminated by heat treatment of the substrate. Gentle heating (e.g., 50 degrees C, 5 min) leads to the efficient alkylation of mobile pyridine adsorbate by the C-Cl bonds of the film, covalently tethering the adsorbate to the surface as a pyridinium salt. Subsequent binding of a Pd-based colloid to surface pyridinium (and remaining strongly bound and immobile pyridine ligand) sites permits selective electroless metal deposition and fabrication of patterned metal films.  相似文献
