A highly specific polyclonal antiserum to the environmental contaminant 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis-(4-chlorophenyl)-ethane (p,p′-DDT)

A very selective polyclonal antiserum against 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis-(4-chlorophenyl)-ethane (p,p′-DDT) was obtained by a careful choice of the haptenic structure (2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-ethanol hemisuccinate). This hapten was conjugated to BSA to prepare the immunogen. The effects of different types of solid phases on the equilibrium reaction between the hapten on solid phase and the polyclonal antiserum were evaluated to obtain a fine tuning of the antiserum performances in terms of specificity for p,p′-DDT and sensitivity to low levels of this pesticide. The calibration curves obtained show that it is possible to set up a sensitive assay for p,p′-DDT, employing a p,p′-dichlorodiphenylacetic acid-based solid phase, with a detection limit of 0.12 ng/mL and a working range of about 0.21–40 ng/mL. Selectivity towards several p,p′-DDT-related substances was good (o,p-DDT 17%, p,p′-DDD 1.2% o,p-DDD 6.3%, p,p′-DDE 6.7%). The analysis of archaeological glass by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy

Summary An analytical procedure is described for the analysis of archaeological glass by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Glass samples were analysed in solution after fusion with lithium metaborate at 1100°C. The analyses were performed in the sequential multielemental mode of operation, with the determination of 15 elements in four analytical runs; only elements with not too large concentration difference were analysed in a single run. The following elements were accounted for: Si, Na, Ca, Al, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ti, Sr, Ba, Cr, Ni, Cu, Co, Pb.     

Unsymmetrical diaryl sulfones through palladium-catalyzed coupling of aryl iodides and arenesulfinates

[reaction: see text] The palladium-catalyzed coupling of aryl iodides and arenesulfinates provides a simple and extremely efficient new route to unsymmetrical diaryl sulfones, usually isolated in high yield. The reaction tolerates a variety of functionalized aryl iodides, including those containing ether, ester, and nitro groups. The best results have been obtained by using Pd(2)(dba)(3), Xantphos, Cs(2)CO(3), and (n)Bu(4)NCl in toluene at 80 degrees C.     

Liquid—liquid extraction and determination of uranium(IV) with 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(benzoylhydrazone)

2,6-Diacetylpyridine bis(benzoylhydrazone) (H₂DPBH) is proposed as a ligand for the extraction of uranium(VI). Complete extraction from aqueous solutions into dichloromethane is achieved with a ligand/metal mole ratio of < for 10^?5?10^?4 M uranyl ion. Potentiometric measurements indicate that the extracted species is UO₂ (DPBH). Uranium can be determined in the extract by spectrophotometric measurements at 420 nm and by differentail pulse polarography (E_p = ?0.67 V) with tetraethylammonium bromide as supporting electrolyte. For both methods, the detection limit is about 2 × 10^?6 M in the extract.     

Stereoselective Epoxidation of Cyclic Dienes and Trienes by Dioxiranes

Epoxides are essential building blocks in organic chemistry. The epoxidation of unsubstituted cyclic dienes 2 , 3 , 4 and triene 5 using dimethyldioxirane ( 1a ) and its trifluoro analog 1b methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane has been investigated. The excellent yields obtained (90–98%) are accompanied by outstandingly high diastereoselectivities (90–98%). Interpretation of results based upon the early idea that polar groups can direct the dioxirane attack by dipole–dipole interaction provides a likely rationale, along with a more generalized mechanistic view.     

Duality methods for a class of quasilinear systems

Duality methods are used to generate explicit solutions to nonlinear Hodge systems, demonstrate the well-posedness of boundary value problems, and reveal, via the Hodge–Bäcklund transformation, underlying symmetries among superficially different forms of the equations.     

Polymerization of (E)‐1,3‐Pentadiene and (E)‐2‐methyl‐1,3‐pentadiene with neodymium catalysts: Examination of the factors that affect the stereoselectivity

(E)‐1,3‐Pentadiene (EP) and (E)‐2‐methyl‐1,3‐pentadiene (2MP) were polymerized to cis‐1,4 polymers with homogeneous and heterogeneous neodymium catalysts to examine the influence of the physical state of the catalyst on the polymerization stereoselectivity. Data on the polymerization of (E)‐1,3‐hexadiene (EH) are also reported. EP and EH gave cis‐1,4 isotactic polymers both with the homogeneous and with the heterogeneous system, whereas 2MP gave an isotactic cis‐1,4 polymer with the heterogeneous catalyst and a syndiotactic cis‐1,4 polymer, never reported earlier, with the homogeneous one. For comparison, the results obtained with the soluble CpTiCl₃‐based catalyst (Cp = cyclopentadienyl), which gives cis‐1,4 isotactic poly(2MP), are examined. A tentative interpretation is given for the mechanism of the formation of the stereoregular polymers obtained and a complete NMR characterization of the cis‐1,4‐syndiotactic poly(2MP) is reported. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Total and Semi‐Syntheses of Antimicrobial Thuggacin Derivatives

The total and semi‐synthesis of 13 new macrolactones derived from thuggacin, which is a secondary metabolite from the myxobacterium Sorangium cellulosum, are reported. The thuggacins have attracted much attention due to their strong antibacterial activity, particularly towards Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This study focuses on 1) thuggacin derivatives that cannot equilibrate by transacylation between the three natural thuggacins A–C, 2) the roles of the thiazole ring, and 3) the hexyl side chain at C2. Semi‐synthetic O‐methylation at C17 suppressed the transacylations without a substantial loss of antibacterial activity. Exchanging the C17–C25 side chain for simplified hydrophobic chains led to complete loss of antibacterial activity. Exchange of the thiazole by an oxazole ring or removal of the hexyl side chain at C2 had no substantial effect on the biological properties.
