Asphaltenes, the heaviest and most polar fraction of crude oil, are responsible for the clogging of oil pipelines and of underground reservoir rocks. Asphaltenes are defined as a solubility class (toluene- or benzene-soluble, n-alkane insoluble), and a consensus is still lacking on the molar mass (M) averages, distribution, and range of these materials. Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) is among the most widely employed methods for characterizing the M averages and distributions of both natural and synthetic polymers and, as such, has seen widespread application in the study of asphaltenes. SEC analysis of asphaltenes presents a number of challenges, however, some inherent to all low-M materials and some unique to these particular analytes. Here, we have experimentally compared several of the most commonly used approaches to SEC of asphaltenes, in hope of both demonstrating the influence of experimental conditions upon the results obtained as well as to determine optimal conditions of analysis. In the end, while the former goal was met, the latter one remains an open challenge in the field.  相似文献

Immunization with complex mixtures, like the human plasma resulted in the generation of cloned mAb libraries (PlasmaScan? and QuantiPlasma? libraries, with >1000 individual mAbs) reacting with a nonredundant set of antigenic epitopes. mAb proteomics refers to quasi‐hypothesis‐free profiling of plasma samples with nascent or cloned mAb libraries for the discovery of disease‐specific biomarkers. Once mAbs with biomarker potential have been identified, the next task is the determination of cognate antigens recognized by the respective mAbs. To determine the cognate protein antigen corresponding to each individual mAbs in the cloned mAb libraries, we have separated human plasma by consecutive steps of desalting and various chromatography procedures. The process resulted in 783 fractions, which we termed “Analyte Library” (AL). The AL represents the human plasma proteome in relatively low‐protein complexity fractions. Here, to determine the utility of the AL, we selected ten plasma proteins and checked for their presence in the fractions. Among the ten cases, the distribution of four selected plasma proteins matched expectations, as these proteins were present only in a few fractions corresponding to their physical, chemical, and biochemical properties. However, in six cases, we observed “smear” ‐like distribution or complete absence of the proteins, suggesting that protein–protein interactions or protein variants may alter the observed plasma distribution profiles. Nevertheless, we conclude that the AL is an efficient, high throughput tool to complement the mAb biomarker discovery process with cognate protein antigen identification for each mAbs.  相似文献

We present an achiral diacrylate that shows a phase transition from the synclinic smectic C phase (SmC) to the anticlinic smectic C (SmCalt). This last phase has been previously reported only for swallow-tailed or dimeric compounds. Our studies using differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, polarizing optical microscopy and broad band dielectric spectroscopy suggest the existence of this mesophase in this bifunctional smectogen.  相似文献

The goal of this article is to build an abstract mathematical theory rather than a computational one of the process of transmission of ideology. The basis of much of the argument is Patten's Environment Theory that characterizes a system with its double environment (input or stimulus and output or response) and the existing interactions among them. Ideological processes are semiotic processes, and if in Patten's theory, the two environments are physical, in this theory ideological processes are physical and semiotic, as are stimulus and response. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work allowed the identification of major transformation products (TPs) of acetamiprid (ACTM) during Fenton process. Acetamiprid is a chloronicotinoid insecticide widely used around the world for its characteristics (high insecticidal activity, good systemic properties, suitable field stability, etc.). The degradation of the parent molecule and the identification of the main TPs were evaluated in different water matrices (demineralized water and real agro-food industrial wastewater). TPs of acetamiprid generated by Fenton experiments were monitored and identified by liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (LC–QTOF–MS/MS). Up to 14 TPs were characterized based on the accurate mass of the molecular ion and fragment ions obtained in both full-scan and MS/MS modes. Most of them were eliminated after 75 min of treatment time in demineralized water. However, in real agro-food industrial wastewater, most of them were eliminated at 90 min of treatment time, demonstrating the influence of the matrix composition on the studied compound degradation.  相似文献

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) probes the surface features of specimens using an extremely sharp tip scanning the sample surface while the force is applied. AFM is also widely used for investigating the electrically non-conductive materials by applying an electric potential on the tip. Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) and Electrochemical Strain Microscopy (ESM) are variants of AFM for different materials. Both PFM and ESM signals are obtained by observing the displacement of the tip when applying electric fields during the scanning process. The PFM technique is based on converse piezoelectric effect of ferroelectrics and the ESM technique is based on electrochemical coupling in solid ionic conductors. In this work, two continuum-mechanical formulations for simulation of PFM and ESM are discussed. In the first model, for PFM simulation, a phase field approach based on the Allen-Cahn equation for non-conserved order parameters is employed for ferroelectrics. Here, the polarization vector is chosen as order parameter. Since ferroelectrics have highly anisotropic properties, this model accounts for transversely isotropic symmetry using an invariant formulation. The polarization switching behavior under the electric field will be discussed with some numerical examples. In the simulation of ESM, we employ a constitutive model based on the work of Bohn et al. [8] for the modeling of lithium manganese dioxide LiMn2O4 (LMO). It simulates the deformation of the LMO particle according to an applied voltage and the evolution of lithium concentration after removing a DC pulse. Atomic force microscopy observations of the free surface of gold thin films deposited on silicon substrates have evidenced the buckling of the films and the formation of blister patterns undergoing plastic folding. The classical elastic buckling and plastic deformation of the films are analyzed in the framework of the F?ppl-Von Kármán theory of thin plates introducing the notion of low-angle tilt boundaries and dislocation distributions to describe this folding effect. It is demonstrated that, in agreement with elementary plasticity of bent crystals, the presence of such tilt-boundaries results in the formation of buckling patterns of lower energy than "classical" elastic blisters.  相似文献

The long-range ordered surface alloy Bi/Ag(111) is found to exhibit a giant spin splitting of its surface electronic structure due to spin-orbit coupling, as is determined by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. First-principles electronic structure calculations fully confirm the experimental findings. The effect is brought about by a strong in-plane gradient of the crystal potential in the surface layer, in interplay with the structural asymmetry due to the surface-potential barrier. As a result, the spin polarization of the surface states is considerably rotated out of the surface plane.  相似文献
