A vanishing viscosity approach to a quasistatic evolution problem with nonconvex energy

We study a quasistatic evolution problem for a nonconvex elastic energy functional. Due to lack of convexity, the natural energetic formulation can be obtained only in the framework of Young measures. Since the energy functional may present multiple wells, an evolution driven by global minimizers may exhibit unnatural jumps from one well to another one, which overcome large potential barriers. To avoid this phenomenon, we study a notion of solution based on a viscous regularization. Finally we compare this solution with the one obtained with global minimization.     

A law of large numbers for finite‐range dependent random matrices

We consider random Hermitian matrices in which distant above‐diagonal entries are independent but nearby entries may be correlated. We find the limit of the empirical distribution of eigenvalues by combinatorial methods. We also prove that the limit has an algebraic Stieltjes transform by an argument based on dimension theory of Noetherian local rings. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Carbazolylmethylphosphonate compounds – Synthesis,coordination and fluorescence in solution and cells

The compounds diethyl-N-carbazolylmethylphosphonate 1 and diethyl-2-oxymethylphosphonate carbazole 2 have been synthesised and characterized by a range of techniques including NMR, absorption and emission spectroscopy, infrared, and mass spectroscopy. Compound 1 forms a 2:1 complex 3 with calcium nitrate and the single crystal X-ray diffraction structure of 3 is described. Titrations of 1 with Zn²⁺ and Ca²⁺ in ethanol reveal that the intrinsic fluorescence is only slightly perturbed in the presence of these metal ions in micromolar ethanol solutions. Compounds 1 and 2 are readily taken up and visualized in L929 fibrosarcoma and DRG (Dorsal root ganglia) cell lines.     

Validation of a Monte Carlo HPGe detector model against irradiated foil gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements

In order to separate and pre-concentrate uranium from aqueous phase, a novel silica-based adsorbent was prepared by impregnating nalidixic acid (HNA) into a macroreticular silica/polymer composite support (SiO₂-P) with a mean diameter of 60 μm. Adsorption behavior of uranium from aqueous solution onto the adsorbent was studied. Experimental results indicated that HNA/SiO₂-P showed strong adsorption for uranium in a wide range of pH from 3.5 to 10.0, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 35.4 mg g⁻¹. In addition, HNA/SiO₂-P exhibited good selectivity for U(VI) and showed weak or bare adsorption affinity to foreign ions. Kinetic and isotherm of uranium adsorption were in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm adsorption model, respectively. Moreover, U(VI) sorption was found to be an endothermic reaction and spontaneous under experimental state. The synthesized adsorbent showed an admirable stability at lower pH values in aqueous solution.
