An ethanol process based on a gas-lift tower fermenter arrangement was used as a model system to show the strong dependence of reactor behavior on the developing chemical environment within the reactor. The reactor performance limits for realistic substrates—starch and molasses—are characterized and compared with those attainable on an ideal substrate, glucose.

The incorporation of cyclodextrins (CDs) to nonviral cationic polymer vectors is very attractive due to recent studies that report a clear improvement of their cytocompatibility and transfection efficiency. However, a systematic study on the influence of the CD derivatization is still lacking. In this work, the relevance of β‐CD permethylation has been addressed by preparing and evaluating two series of copolymers of the cationic N‐ethyl pyrrolidine methacrylamide (EPA) and styrenic units bearing pendant hydroxylated and permethylated β‐CDs (HCDSt and MeCDSt, respectively). For both cell lines, CDs permethylation shows a strong influence on plasmid DNA complexation, “in vitro” cytocompatibility and transfection efficiency of the resulting copolymers over two murine cell lines. While the incorporation of the hydroxylated CD moiety increased the cytotoxicity of the copolymers in comparison with their homopolycationic counterpart, the permethylated copolymers have shown full cytocompatibility as well as superior transfection efficiency than the controls. This behavior has been related to the different chemical nature of both units and tentatively to a different distribution of units along the polymeric chains. Cellular internalization analysis with fluorescent copolymers supports this behavior.

Varietal compounds have been analyzed in wines prepared in the laboratory from four grape varieties grown in Spain. The possibilities for enhancing their aroma afforded by addition of glycosidase enzymes and steeping with the skin were studied. A continuous method, easy to automate, for the determination of anthocyanins in wine based on the coupling of continuous liquid–solid extraction, evaporation, HPLC individual separation and photometric detection is proposed. The target analytes are removed from the wine in a continuous fashion using a C18 minicolumn and eluted with an aqueous solution (pH 2) with 16% acetonitrile. The eluted fraction is concentrated by solvent evaporation assisted by heat and dragging off the vapour using a flow of N2. For in-line preconcentration, a continuous evaporation module was designed and located in the manifold between the solid-phase minicolumn and the injection valve of the chromatograph. In this way, injection of the sample into the dynamic system leads the plug through it for liquid–solid extraction of the anthocyanins, partial evaporation of the eluent (with a preconcentration factor as required) and transport to the high-pressure injection valve of the chromatograph, where individual separation and subsequent photometric detection take place. The method thus developed for the determination of malvidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3-glucoside and peonidin-3-glucoside anthocyanins in Spanish red wines is more sensitive than the batch manual method based on the same steps, has better linearity of the calibrations curves with lower detection limits and much wider determination range for the most abundant anthocyanins in wine. Despite heparin being the most widely used macromolecular drug, the design of small‐molecule ligands to modulate its effects has been hampered by the structural properties of this polyanionic polysaccharide. Now a dynamic covalent selection approach is used to identify a new ligand for heparin, assembled from extremely simple building blocks. The amplified molecule strongly binds to heparin (KD in the low μm range, ITC) by a combination of electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and CH–π interactions as shown by NMR and molecular modeling. Moreover, this ligand reverts the inhibitory effect of heparin within an enzymatic cascade reaction related to blood coagulation. This study demonstrates the power of dynamic covalent chemistry for the discovery of new modulators of biologically relevant glycosaminoglycans. 相似文献

This paper reports the voltammetric determination of 17β-estradiol in urine and buttermilk samples using a simple detector based on a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with copper(II) oxide (CuO). The CuO was obtained by the Pechini method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopies. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square-wave voltammetry (SWV) demonstrated that the CuO-modified carbon paste electrode (CuO/CPE detector) displayed much higher electrocatalytic activity in the 17β-estradiol oxidation reaction than the CPE without modification, exhibiting a low detection limit of 21.0 nmol L?1 with a wide linear range from 60.0 to 800.0 nmol L?1 (R = 0.998). Satisfactory results were obtained for the determination of 17β-estradiol in human urine and buttermilk samples. The proposed electrochemical detector offers high repeatability, stability, fast response, low cost, and potential for practical application in the quantification of this hormone. 相似文献

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated an association between the risk of cardiovascular events and increasing C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration. This paper reports the development of an immunosensor for the assessment of the cardiovascular process using anti-C-reactive protein antibody immobilized onto a gold-printed screen electrode. Positive and negative human sera were successfully evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). EIS results show that, after the incubation with positive serum for myocardial infarction, the resistance increased about two times in relation to the negative serum. A linear range from 6.25 to 50 μg mL?1 and detection limit of 0.78 μg mL?1 using DPV were obtained. The immunosensor developed for the CRP detection using gold electrode revealed efficacy and a potential use for the diagnosis and monitoring of the progression of cardiovascular diseases. 相似文献
