Epoxies are an important family of shape memory polymers (SMP) due to their excellent stability and thermo-mechanical endurance and the high values of shape fixity and shape recovery. Actuators based on these materials can be designed for large tensile elongations (e.g., 75% or higher) or large recovered stresses (e.g., 3 MPa or higher). However, meeting these requirements simultaneously is a difficult task because changes in the crosslink density affect both variables in opposite ways. We show that an SMP based on an epoxy network with both chemical and physical crosslinks could be strained up to 75% in four repeated shape memory cycles with tensile stresses close to 3 MPa. Shape fixity and shape recovery values were close to 98% and 96%, respectively, for everyone of the cycles, without any significant change between the first and subsequent cycles. 相似文献

Generating accurate population-specific public health messages regarding sun protection requires knowledge about seasonal variation in sun exposure in different environments. To address this issue for a subtropical area of Australia, we used polysulphone badges to measure UVR for the township of Nambour (26° latitude) and personal UVR exposure among Nambour residents who were taking part in a skin cancer prevention trial. Badges were worn by participants for two winter and two summer days. The ambient UVR was approximately three times as high in summer as in winter. However, participants received more than twice the proportion of available UVR in winter as in summer (6.5%vs 2.7%, P < 0.05), resulting in an average ratio of summer to winter personal UVR exposure of 1.35. The average absolute difference in daily dose between summer and winter was only one-seventh of a minimal erythemal dose. Extrapolating from our data, we estimate that ca. 42% of the total exposure received in the 6 months of winter (June–August) and summer (December–February) is received during the three winter months. Our data show that in Queensland a substantial proportion of people’s annual UVR dose is obtained in winter, underscoring the need for dissemination of sun protection messages throughout the year in subtropical and tropical climates. 相似文献

The preparation of a new thiophenic dimer partially derivatized with a bromohexylic chain is described. Its polymerization under mild oxidative conditions leads to a polythiophene with a degree of functionalization of 50% and highly soluble in organic solvents. The product has been fully characterized by FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR using one and two-dimensional techniques as well as by SEC and thermal analysis. Solvatochromic effects of the new polymer have been investigated in different mixtures, underlining its self-assembling capability even in solvated states. 相似文献

The biosynthesis of lignarenones 1 and 2, the major polyketides of the Mediterranean mollusc Scaphander lignarius is described. The process is primed by benzoic acid and requires acetate and propionate as extender units. Pomegranate use is increasing worldwide, as it is considered a tasteful healthy food. It is mainly used as fruit, juice, and jam. The pomegranate peel represents about 40–50% of the total fruit weight and contains numerous and diverse bioactive substances. The aim of this research was to analyze the pomegranate peel chemical composition of Wonderful cultivated in Southern Italy and treated with an innovative physic dry concentration procedure in comparison with the peel composition of freeze-dried Wonderful cultivated in Southern Italy, freeze-dried Wonderful cultivated in South Africa, and freeze-dried pomegranate cultivated in India. The specific aim was to verify how much the growth area, cultivar type, and dry procedure influenced the chemical composition of the peels in terms of valuable bioactive compounds. Spectrophotometric and HPLC identification methods were used to detect antioxidants, antioxidant activities, and phenolic and flavonoid components. Results evidenced that in pomegranate peels of Wonderful cultivated in Calabria and dried with the innovative process, total phenolic substances, total flavonoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, and antioxidant activities were the highest. Great amounts of single phenolic acids and flavonoids were found in Calabrian Wonderful peels dried with the innovative process. Overall, it emerged that a great amount of bioactive and diverse compounds found in Calabrian Wonderful pomegranate peel comes from the niche pedoclimatic conditions, and the physic drying innovative methodology turned out to be an advantageous procedure to concentrate and conserve biocompounds. 相似文献

The goal of international trade theories is to explain the exchange of goods and services between different countries, aiming to benefit from it. Albeit the idea is very simple and known since ancient history, smart policy and business strategies need to be implemented by each subject, resulting in a complex as well as not obvious interplay. In order to understand such a complexity, different theories have been developed since the sixteenth century and today new ideas still continue to enter the game. Among them, the so called classical theories are country-based and range from Absolute and Comparative Advantage theories by A. Smith and D. Ricardo to Factor Proportions theory by E. Heckscher and B. Ohlin. In this work we build a simple hydrodynamic model, able to reproduce the main conclusions of Comparative Advantage theory in its simplest setup, i.e. a two-country world with country A and country B exchanging two goods within a genuine exchange-based economy and a trade flow ruled only by market forces. The model is further generalized by introducing money in order to discuss its role in shaping trade patterns. Advantages and drawbacks of the model are also discussed together with perspectives for its improvement. 相似文献

Red onion, a species of great economic importance rich in phytochemicals (bioactive compounds) known for its medicinal properties, was fertilized with sulphur-bentonite enriched with orange residue or olive pomace, with the aim of producing onion enriched in health beneficial compounds. There is a worldwide great demand of minimally processed food or food ingredients with functional properties because of a new awareness of how important healthy functional nutrition is in life. Phytochemicals have the capacity to regulate most of the metabolic processes resulting in health benefits. Red onion bioactive compound quantity and quality can vary according to cultivation practices. The main aims of the current research were to determine the chemical characteristics of the crude extracts from red onion bulbs differently fertilized and to evaluate their biological activity in normal and oxidative stress conditions. The lyophilized onion bulbs have been tested in vitro on two cellular models, i.e., the H9c2 rat cardiomyoblast cell line and primary human dermal fibroblasts, in terms of viability and oxygen radical homeostasis. The results evidenced different phytochemical compositions and antioxidant activities of the extracts obtained from red onions differently fertilized. Sulphur-bentonite fertilizers containing orange waste and olive pomace positively affected the red onion quality with respect to the red onion control, evidencing that sulphur-bentonite-organic fertilization was able to stimulate plant a secondary metabolism inducing the production of phytochemicals with healthy functions. A positive effect of the extracts from red onions treated with fertilizers—in particular, with those containing orange waste, such as the reduction of oxidative stress and induction of cell viability of H9c2 and human fibroblasts—was observed, showing a concentration- and time-dependent profile. The results evidenced that the positive effects were related to the phenols and, in particular, to chlorogenic and p-coumaric acids and to the flavonol kaempferol, which were more present in red onion treated with low orange residue than in the other treated ones. 相似文献

A recently developed nonlinear optical pump-probe microscopy technique uses modulation transfer to sensitively extract excited-state dynamics of endogenous biological pigments, such as eumelanin and pheomelanin. In this work, we use this method to image and characterize several inorganic and organic pigments used in historical art. We show substantial differences in the near-IR pump-probe signatures from nominally similar pigments and suggest extensions to art restoration. 相似文献

Abstract— Experimental animal models that are directly relevant to human melanoma are lacking. We propose the Angora goat as a potentially useful field model with experimental potential and to this end have examined the prevalence and site distribution of all skin cancers in 28 Angora goat herds in Queensland, Australia. The prevalence of benign melanocytic lesions (lentigines) and their experimental induction by sunlight were also investigated. Among 1731 goats over 2 years of age, 139 malignant skin tumors were excised from 95 affected animals. The prevalence of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) was 3.8% and of melanoma, 2.2%. Main site of occurrence of melanoma (83%) was the dorsal surface of the ear; in contrast SCC occurred mostly (84%) on the perineum. Lentigines were darker and more prevalent on the exposed compared with the unexposed surface of the ear in Angoras, analogous to the higher prevalence of nevi on the exposed compared with the less exposed inner surface of the arm in humans. Lentigines, which were also found on the perineum though lighter in color than on the dorsal ear, were absent in young animals under 3 months but were numerous in 1–3 year olds. Furthermore in an experimental substudy eight goats, having one flank repeatedly shorn and the contralateral flank left unshorn, revealed consistently more solar lentigines on the shorn flank ( P < 0.05) when both sides were examined after 9 months. Histopathological examination of paired skin biopsies from five of these goats also showed more abundant pigmentation in skin from the exposed, as compared with the unexposed flank. These findings indicate that sunlight induces tumors and lentigines in goats in a highly site-specific manner. The Angora goat model may suggest paradigms for explaining the site differences observed for human melanoma and may also be useful in the future clarification of molecular changes following carcinogenic levels of sun exposure. 相似文献
